To rime OR not THAT is the question inc UPDATE

POETS use rhyme all the time ,rimes of many kinds* appearing within their writing

 HOWEVER it has been concluded... rhyme was not essential to poetry but very important to it.

As important as our abc ...a basic element for all who claim the name 'poet'

But why rime...why is rhyme so  satisfying both to the eye & ear ? yes it is an

 "acoustic encoding" and 

adds to  the ability to remember because of our innate oral history & later Eye-rhymes, as the name suggests, appeal to the eye, rather than to the ear. 

Therefore, they started to play a role in English poetry only from

 the Renaissance period on, when the experience of poetry acquired 

a visual aspect.

STILL IT REMAINS the quandary..

some say rime & hiku do not mix  but I notice my first hiku posted here on PS inc both rime & imagery...ie

On the wind,a bell

Muffled from across the square

Raindrops fill the air

I like rhyme and it gives a special quality to poetry. Great fan of old classical poetry so my love for it. Free verse is good and has its value and impact. I have evolved havi g been part of this community. Thanks to you all.

Perhaps the danger is ( as with spiritual 'milk&solids' of the Bible renown) knowing when to move on to verse freed,yet not forgetting the merits of rime.

To rhyme or not to rhyme is the poet's discretion unless that poem is for the contest that requires rhyming scheme. Well, rhyme your poem if your feel rhyming( a lot of poets here have that gifts in rhyming) it but in my case I don't force myself for that genre that is not my level.But I enjoy imagism with rhymes.

continued- A pal's last need is a thing to heed, so I swore I would not fail; And we started on at the streak of dawn; but God! he looked ghastly pale. He crouched on the sleigh, and he raved all day of his home in Tennessee; And before nightfall a corpse was all that was left of Sam McGee. There wasn't a breath in that land of death, and I hurried, horror-driven, With a corpse half hid that I couldn't get rid, because of a promise given; It was lashed to the sleigh, and it seemed to say: "You may tax your brawn and brains, But you promised true, and it's up to you to cremate those last remains."

Now a promise made is a debt unpaid, and the trail has its own stern code. In the days to come, though my lips were dumb, in my heart how I cursed that load. In the long, long night, by the lone firelight, while the huskies, round in a ring, Howled out their woes to the homeless snows— O God! how I loathed the thing.

Now Sam McGee was from Tennessee, where the cotton blooms and blows. Why he left his home in the South to roam 'round the Pole, God only knows. He was always cold, but the land of gold seemed to hold him like a spell; Though he'd often say in his homely way that "he'd sooner live in hell." On a Christmas Day we were mushing our way over the Dawson trail. Talk of your cold! through the parka's fold it stabbed like a driven nail. If our eyes we'd close, then the lashes froze till sometimes we couldn't see; It wasn't much fun, but the only one to whimper was Sam McGee. And that very night, as we lay packed tight in our robes beneath the snow, And the dogs were fed, and the stars o'erhead were dancing heel and toe, He turned to me, and "Cap," says he, "I'll cash in this trip, I guess; And if I do, I'm asking that you won't refuse my last request." Well, he seemed so low that I couldn't say no; then he says with a sort of moan: "It's the cursèd cold, and it's got right hold till I'm chilled clean through to the bone. Yet 'tain't being dead—it's my awful dread of the icy grave that pains; So I want you to swear that, foul or fair, you'll cremate my last remains."

Maureen, when very young I used to recite that gleaming gem from beautiful start to beautiful finish without missing a single word or a single beat, and man do I miss those days! YOUTH- a treasure far too oft not appreciated until it is forever and sadly gone! God bless..

My first love is always rhyme, ever since at age ten I read this gem of a poem-- "The Cremation of Sam McGee" BY ROBERT W. SERVICE...Truly a delight to read at any age methinks. However lately -free verse has been growing on me and is a true joy to engage in whenever the urge strikes me. Very interesting blog my friend.

Rime Robert always puts me in mind of my first suit ' off the peg' til when I was more affluent ( & not quiteso svelte) I had one (waistcoated & all) made-to- measure( verse freed so to speak)

Brian, thanks for the blog, regarding rhyme or not, well for me it depends on the theme or how I feel, I can rhyme well, but I often just like to be willy-nilly and not rhyme, perhaps ramble, but if I have to write in a form requiring rhyme, I enjoy that experience just as much, it is like putting a puzzle together, peace _Constance

In answer to your question Brian, I guess it will depend on the poet. Rhyme does play an important part in child development however: "Studies have shown that in the early years, a child's rhyme awareness is predictive of the ease with which they will learn to read. A combination of enjoyment and educational benefits make sharing and reciting rhymes an ideal first introduction to the sounds in language for the early years." Repetition of rhymes and stories can also help improve memory, concentration and cognition.

Classical Greek and Latin poets did not use rhyme. Enheduanna’s (the earliest recorded poet) petitionary prayers were not written in rhyme. Chant poems draw on the ancient roots of poetry. Some qualities of poetry have been with us since the dawn of civilization when early man attempted to vocalise emotions, born out by the fact that there is a wealth of songs and recitals that preliterate peoples have. Anthropologists speculate that poetry- opposed to speech- probably began in religious ceremonies to accompany dance. Chanting (like rhyme) & dancing are linked by their use of repetition. Repetition establishes a rhythm and enchants the listener. Rhythm and sound have primacy over meaning.
