Shock news about novel writing - Nina Parmenter's Blog

Hello, I’m Nina :-)

I have been dipping in and out of poetry since I was very young - in fact one of my most treasured possessions is a book of poems I wrote when I was six. (That and my copy of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes - which I still love to this day!) As a teenager I used to gift little rhymes to my friends to cheer them up but I never seriously continued my scribbling into adulthood.

If you’d told me a year ago how much poetry I’d be writing today, I probably wouldn’t have believed you. My brain was fogged by baby brain and, unbeknown to me, an undiagnosed illness. Towards the end of 2017, the baby brain began to improve, I got the illness under control, and with a burst of joy at its new-found clarity and creativity, my brain started to spew forth poetry as never before! I seized the moment, started a blog (called “It All Rhymes”) and with that going down well, joined Poetry Soup in January 2018. So far, I’ve not looked back!

In “real life”, I’m a Marketing Manager and I live in Wiltshire, UK with my fabulous husband and two wonderful, exhausting boys.

Shock news about novel writing

Blog Posted:8/29/2019 3:21:00 PM

There’s something I wanted to share, for the benefit of anyone too apprehensive to start writing that book.

It’s fun.

I never expected it to be fun. Poetry’s fun, I thought. A book? No. That’d be a slog. But I can honestly say I’ve never had such a good time on my own.

My creation is a children’s book, aimed at 8-12 year olds, a slimy, oddball, sci-fi adventure. I’m edging towards final draft stage with it now, although I’ve been saying that for months...

But in the year it’s taken to get here, writing has been my favourite part of the week. I have managed to find 3-4 concentrated hours on a Friday (termtime only) to do it, and I have defended those hours angrily and selfishly, refusing to spend them on anything but writing. I have even turned lady-lunching-opportunities! That is out of character.

So, what have I been enjoying the most about “big book writing”? I love those moments when I feel I’ve described something perfectly. I love laughing and dreaming and adventuring with my characters. And I really love that feeling of coming up with new twists and rushing to my computer to work them in. Even the editing been quite fun - I feel like my first draft was a black and white sketch, and the edits have filled in the colour.

I’ve learnt a lot too - it’s been funducational. Infotaining. My first draft had the pacing all wrong, it had information dumps everywhere, and the characters were a bit two dimensional. It took me a long time to be brave enough with my editing to start to remedy those things. My current draft is better but...

Which brings me onto what I haven’t enjoyed. The feeling that it can always be improved. That it’s never quite there. At what point I stop and call it done, I just don’t know. Maybe I never will but hey. So far it’s been a party at my dining room table.

Just cruising through old blogs and seeing you here, Richard. It's been so long since you wrote a new poem. I miss that. Pleae let me know if you ever post a new one.
Date: 8/31/2019 1:19:00 AM
Good luck! I'm so thrilled for you, Nina!:-) And thanks for the encouragement! I was so close to publishing a book of poetry 11 years ago but lost my manuscript of about 135 poems:-( It was a devastating setback. I basically gave up poetry writing after that. I started up again when I discovered this site in 2016. I've managed to recreate almost 20 of the lost poems. The rest I'll use up for my "Pick A Title" contests. I'll make another go of it next year:-)

I am sorry to hear of that loss of yours, Edward. It would devastate me to lose that many poems starting out!! I can recall when I had my first 100, and the wonderful feeling it gave me. You will be back to 135 in no time!

Think it is fantastic Nina. Even a rough draft is a big accomplishment. I know what you mean about the enjoyment. I was challenged to write a book so I decided I would write a novel, why go small. It was an absolute blast. Every moment I sat writing it was like I had left the world and entered into the one I had created. I knew each of the characters personally and just got lost in my writing, a few hours a day I didn't have to worry about anything else because I wasn't here anymore. I didn't attempt to have it published, that was never my intention. I have a friend who wrote a novel and got published her first time out, so it can happen. Good luck with your book, I am excited for you.

Oh, I am just now seeing that you are lazy like me and that is the reason YOU are not working on a novel either! I am so glad to see a fellow poet who is able to admit laziness! your poetry is so good, Chris, I would buy your book if you ever did an anthology of them. Let me know if you publish them.

Ha I know what you mean Chris. Writing it has been a fun little bubble - just me and my 8 year old son in a little feedback loop! Putting it out to publishers sounds less fun - but I do have a compulsion to give it a go. Glad to hear you enjoyed yours too.

No, that's not in the cards for me but I appreciate you saying so Andrea. It is a lot of work to get a book published and I am basically lazy. : )

If anyone can get published, it will be Nina. You too, Chris. Won't you try to send your novel to publishers?
Date: 8/30/2019 2:58:00 PM
GAAAAA! I'm shocked!! And I wish further shocking, please. Seriously though I wrote a 3 banger children's book and part of another. Soooo hard to get noticed. Sent many queries and finally gave up. I refuse to self-pub. If it ain't good enough to go traditional then it ain't good enough

Yeah I know what you mean. If I ran out of “proper” options (and I have no huge expectations there although I’m going to give it my best shot) I’d probably put it up on something like the amazon print-on-demand service. A friend did that and although the returns are v small, at least you aren’t paying to publish - and at least your creation is out there somewhere! She actually got a publishing deal off the back of it so you never know...

The fb group, Writer's Digest Community Discussion & Critique, is a boon for any aspiring writer. I can recommend it. They regularly post tips on various topics, and pieces are critiqued (useful feedback if you are stuck). There is as new fad where genre bleeds into one another ... Enjoy your creativity.

It is a difficult target audience that you are writing for. From experience, might I suggest that you book a reading for that age group at your local library (a Saturday morning?) and guage their reaction. Sometimes it is better to write an entirely new story, than trying to 'fix' an existing one. Just my thoughts on the matter. BTW Poetry can also be hard work ... Enjoy the writing process - everything is a learning curve. :)

Part 2 - I wrote the book with my son in mind as an audience and he is really into science, coding, things like that. So I need to see if kids that are less obsessed with that sort of thing “get” it. I did put in plenty of slime to keep everyone happy though! You’re right - it’s s learning curve. Even if this book does nothing, I feel I’ve run my own creative writing course!

Great idea about the library Suzette! I do happen to have an 8 year old lying round my house who has provided me with the most awesome honest feedback and improvement suggestions throughout the process. Once I’ve edited it to his and my satisfaction (on reflection I’d say I’m happy with 80-90 percent of it now so I’ll just have to set my cut off point somewhere I guess!) I’m going to get some other kids the same age to read it! But reading aloud to them too would be a really good idea.

Let the party continue. Cheering you on. I have published several books. The process in a little complicated, but once you get it down, no big deal. Trust yourself. You got this... I read your stuff. Easy peasy... Ann

Date: 8/29/2019 3:36:00 PM
wow, what a process you are going through. I admire you. I don't think I could pull it off. I put priority on too many other things to ever be able to put aside that much time for just writing a book. I have a few ideas too, but I have nowhere to go with them. I feel one should know kind of how the story ends if they are going to start writing it! keep going. It's wonderful what you are doing . I would probably do a Stephen King type novel if I could, and one idea I have would be all about people being turned into aliens by an innocent looking injection given them by their doctors. (Oh, wait, that would not be fictional . haha)

I knew it would be high for you, Craig. I love studying up on personality types. I am like only 5% blue. It's all about what motivates us in life. We really can't help what we like and how we are. It all started in our childhood.

I tried it Andrea! I’m a cocktail! Which is true - I’m emotional, a know-it-all, fun and I hate conflict. All 4 types. I couldn’t answer a lot of the questions to be honest. Like “are you unmotivated, vain, demanding or unforgiving?” Uhhhhhhh..... honestly none of those!

I suppose Andrea that all of it depends on your definition of "well known" and where one sets their bar. Mine is set beyond sunshine and lollypops and eighth grade kisses and if that is my fault I'll own it.

thanks for your cute reply on my "autobiographical fiction" idea! That Color Code test, I hope you will take it, Nina and let me know what you are. It is not about colors EAch color is just a symbol for your "type" of personality and what motivates you. I am in the rarest category(white/yellow). I just want a stress free fun life. As luck would have it, my husband is the exact opposite one (red/blue) BTW, results don't change. Answers are based off how you felt as a child.

And I should take that test too... bet my result would change day to day although it would DEFINITELY say I am better at lone pursuits than being a team player! Probably why I enjoyed the writing... if I was a “real” writer with an editor, I don’t think I could cope with “input” lol !

My personality and mindset are different from yours, Craig. I would rather be well known someplace by being occupied there rather than write a book that nobody will ever publish. In other words, if I am not sure I can see a future for something, I am not likely to attempt it. Also we are not the same politics nor do we think the same about writing (as I noticed in another blog that you commented to today) I am basically kind of lazy and motivated by "fun"; this is my personality according to sociologist Hartman's Color Code test ( a very valid test given in work places to determine the job careers, relationship choices, etc) I can clearly see your "type " is definitely not mine!

Sounds like a combination of Coma and The invasion of the Body Snatchers--great thought but I don't buy your "no time", you write 30 poems a month on average, cut that back to 15 and write your book with the gained time - in the end, that one book will be more rewarding than a thousand poems (you already have enough).
Date: 8/29/2019 3:32:00 PM
Glad you're enjoying it, Nina ... I'm working up the courage, (and a plan on how to start, cuz I've not a clue. Outlining first, I imagine?). I'll let you know ... I tend to write long poetry, and many "poems" turn into novellas, so perhaps I'm suited ... we'll see! You go, Girl! :-) <3

(2) ... most of the poems submitted never even make it to the judge, (the prelims "weed" them out). Going to try the submission process - we'll see! (After my folks pass - both 93, I take care of them - I'll be moving to Paris to "immerse" myself in the atmosphere and just WRITE for a couple of years, a book at least, and some poetry, too. Looking forward to that, though I want my folks around for as long as possible. After that I'm headed to the South Pacific and a small cottage by the sea!). Blessings, Dear Poet! :o) <3

(1) Oh, thank you so much, Suzette, that is very kind of you! When/if it happens, I will surely let you know ... I'm working on a portfolio to submit, so we'll see what happens. Also, I'm entering some international contests, though they cost ($$) and I have limited funds at present to contribute. Just a single win in such "big" contests can change a life and bring a lot of exposure, but the odds are SO long, and they get so many submissions ... (continued)
