Monoku - Is It Poetry?

Blog Posted:9/9/2018 5:30:00 PM

A while back a few blogs were written discussing the possibility that a single word might be considered "poetry."  What about Monoku?  A single line... poetry?  Nah, or so I thought (in my arrogance).  Why, anyone can write a single line, shucks, perhaps blindfolded and with one arm tied behind their back, I felt.  And then I read (and reread, and reread) Geoffrey Brewer's monoku (which coincidentally is the first place winer in my latest contest - see results below).  From life to death, from love to loss, all of humanity's dreams and hopes and finally, the end, all in one beautifully written single line of poetry.  The imagination runs wild as you picture two lovers caught up in the giddiness of true love.  The plans devised, the promises made.  But war can change everything.  Whether our protagonist found his peace at the end of his own gun or another the result remains the same... life is ever changing, nothing is ever guaranteed.  The children that were never born, each with unique genetic patterns that were only possible via the coupling of these two persons.  What would their names have been?  The grandchildren that never got to sit on Pawpaw's lap while he thrilled them with stories of love and adventure, or who never got a single taste of Nana's heavenly apple pie.  All of the big and little things in life - the glorious nights and the not so glorious fights, none of it ever got to happen.  A single nugget of lead smaller than a pinky finger was forcibly thrust into his fragile human brain ending everything.   All this and much more in one single line of poetry.  Magnificent!

Congrats to all who placed.

I felt this way as well when reading those type of poems (before I tried writing some). My mind works in parallels and for whatever reason this reminded me of the Pixar movie Ratatouille where the critic in the end realizes, "Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere." In effect, not every brief poem is great poetry, but great poetry can be found in poems of any length.

Brevity has its virtues. Ever tried reading The Rime of the Ancient Mariner!

Thank you for your kind words, July. I have had the same thoughts about single lines of poetry, and even 2 or 3 lines, and sometimes feel that I am getting away with the easy option. I now confess that my monoku is derived from a rather longer poem (more words for your money!): ‘The Ballad of Miss Dutton - also on Poetry Soup. Perhaps this confirms that there can be a story hidden in the words of a monoku.

Query: if we can agree that how one experiences/feels/emotes true love can be universally known without ANY words, shouldn't Monoku versification be able to approach exquisite, intentional poetic expression? :-)

cont. - If the theme only applies to the writer ...thus out of context with your audience - even it has perfect form and all the poetic dynamics, the meaning may be lost or misinterpreted in a single word or Monoku. That style can also make poetry difficult for a novice reader to understand. One of the most beautiful scriptures in the bible is “Jesus wept”, just two words, but knowing the context impacts the reader. So yes, I believe a Monoku is true poetry.

I understand poetry to be the artful arrangement of words (or a word) written in a condensed, logical and aesthetic manner to convey emotion or ideas to the reader. To make the greatest impact, the piece should to be centered around events such as wars or extreme emotions that have had a personal effect on your readers.
