WHERE IS THE HOTHOUSE FOR YOUR POETIC IMAGINATION?

Blog Posted:5/15/2017 1:47:00 AM

Inspiration is  difficult to define , quantify and describe, but clearly it is an essential of all artistic life including our own art form here.

Most sponsors on  PS indicate a theme of some sorts for their contests and no doubt is the  seedcorn to the imagination of those that enter ..but

those apart ..what ,who, where  is the hothouse  for your poetic imagination for your other poetic postings?

Also I write to challenge my mind. When thinking up footle titles, for example to go with the rhymes. Or just taking random words and trying to fit them to a form. This was my inspiration several years in a club that did Buzz words. Some of my best work came from those years!

A few times it has been from movie scenes, other times from nature. A few times just out of the blue, but almost always just from contest themes. (in my first few years it was writing about my personal life and then I became more "universal")

I have always been an avid and regular reader and have always appreciated ' one liners'.Often an article in a newspaper or a headline therein or the current book I have on the go can stimulate and thus be a hothouse to my imagination and my muse.Something I hearperhaps in a message or worship song in church can stimulate and thus a phrase can become a poem in due course. It can also be someone in the news or otherwise topical can stimulate a limerick or clerihew. The changing seasons ,scents colours etc can all create a 'happening' one of those as is moments' so a pencil and a scrap of paper to hand is a must

From the mountaintop to the bottom (now), I followed the poetry trail. Howls of her beckoning voice is what I remember. And her teeth and eyes shinning in the dark (shadows). I never could grasp her soup. Or fall into her lap. Instead my style has been described as different and weird. To wit where I have now seen the writing on the wall, where anything I write or say would be just like shooting blanks in her mind.

A double entendre? YES. A Willow ptarmigan says hello to doug and friends.

It's locked in moments, inspirations and daydreams yet to be freed or hours and days and years yet to be. There is no magic muse specifically because they are found in what is only defined by a collection of all the above - our child yet to be born and, like a child, has a life and mind of its own. How often have we looked back at an older poem and been surprised, good or bad, that we wrote that. It's because our life at that moment was affected by many different things than it is now and so, we were a different person. "Tomorrow" our passions will be excited by something other than today's so, in essence, our "hothouse" is dynamic, a parallel universe of "WE".

I get my best ideas when I am out in nature. I hike every weekend and walk most evenings. On hikes, I carry a notebook. Often, images and phrases come to my mind when I am observing closely. I do the actual writing at home, but the seeds are almost always collected in the woods. I wrote a poem about this last October (Gathering Poems)

Brian i like to dwell with my poems for a bit, i use meditation using the theme required to take me away or i just wander the corridors of my mind, something will come to me, then i go for a walk and then i write..nothing is rushed

The examination of the world from my perspective as I move through a life trying to comprehend its design and the creatures that live in it that call themselves human. The complete understanding of this seems beyond reach but the examination leads to the poetry where my thoughts try to give a glimpse of understanding even if from one humans point of view

Life in its totality inspires me. What I have experienced and felt, what is the now, around me, today as well as memories, both pleasant and horrid. News, global conditions, the world at large, also pull at me until I MUST write about what is going on - some things MUST be said, must be exposed by art!!! But love and beauty also demands equal attention, wants its share of page space. I recently found out about FREE PORTS ... and how priceless art from the world's best artists are kept in CRATES, unseen, locked away from viewing so they are free of tax. The super rich hoarding masterpieces, but not to enjoy or admire. STOCK. It got me so FIRED UP that I wrote a rant. It was published.
