POETRY AS A DIARY

Blog Posted:4/28/2017 1:48:00 AM

I have never been one to keep a diary, but I know many folk so do( my wife has done so and it has been a very useful reference to check memories of particular events in our lives together)

However ,I suppose my anthology posted here on PS has been in some cases a kind of 'poetry diary' in a couple of ways...

My anthology could trace chronologically  my 'obsessions' with particular forms and hence hopefully my development of this hobby of mine...

...and over the past decade of residence here many of my poems could be classed as topical to the world we have shared in that time ,and in my personal world as this link ,below, ,would example  to a particularly key event in my life that I shared to close my last blog

https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/crisis_727094

Am I alone in using my poetry here as a 'sometime poetry diary' ? a kind of 'seasoning'  so to speak!

Could some of your poetry posted here since you joined PS be considered as a diary of sorts ,as you have so responded to events in your life?

I think mine is non-diary, that is to say I do not record specific events but clearly I must be influenced by past experiences. I write to escape the mundane and the daily. I write comic verse to express my sense of humor. I write imaginative pieces to explore the outer reaches of my imagination and because I am fascinated by the way nonsense can have a value and coherance.

Barry ,yes perhaps most of poetry will always reflect some inherent part of our personality, certain our style will do so to some degree.

Part of my poetry is not diary-like at all, most of those are written for contests, attempts to write a certain form, or just for fun. The major part however can definitely be seen as a diary the way you describe it. Only there is no order to it, it jumps to and fro in time in random order. But yes, most definitely. Love this blog.

Agreed. I don't think the non-diary types matter, as long as there are enough other poems that are that way, and preferably over enough time to give a good illustration of changes that may have occurred.

Yes Darren I think would be the case for most of us who regularly participate here.

Interesting blog, mine is camouflaged and disguised somewhat. Its not a diary of what I do but rather of my feelings and emotions with my situation in life.

Yes Lewis ,that is partly my understanding of what a diary can be for we poets
Date: 4/28/2017 5:29:00 PM
Well, yes & no. I've removed over 900 poems from Soup because they were not that well written, & several I consider more suitable to a diary. Many are for my daughter & I liked them as is for her- letters to the future her. Diary poems, to me, are just for self (no revision needed). Other poems may be confessional, but I've polished them, carefully chosen devices... so they are not truly 'diary' (diaries by their nature ARE private... adolescent ones even come with keys... my daughter has three <3 .) Perhaps a better word, instead of diary would be "LOG." Logs RECORD and are meant to be read by others. To that extent, yes, my posted poems on Soup could be called a logbook.

So, in a way, some of my writing is not only a personal log, but also an event log... I lived in THIS time, when THIS happened... if that makes sense?

Something else which I've often questioned is that with art comes responsibility to 'record our times.' As poets, we are witnesses to global conditions, injustices, human tragedies, and it seems we are given a gift for many purposes. YES, to record beauty and personal events, but also to record history in the making.

It's not about the subject or the exposure of something truly personal or painful that for me keeps it from being publically shared, but if I've committed myself fully to making it art. If I can't do that, then I keep it for Me, just me, because I think certain poems should just be for self, something to get off one's chest. That to me is a diary poem.

If I were to use metaphor to explain what diary writing is to me, it would be the difference of what I wear to bed and what I wear out of the house. I am not about to wear babydolls when I go to the public library. I may were simple clothing when I leave home, but I ensure a bit of decorum.

Yes, I did save most of them. The ones on soup, some are HIGHLY personal, and though they'd need a great deal of honing, I feel that I am able to leave them posted for others to read.

Yes Cyndi what I am referring to in poetic terms is a kind of log/diary of our journey as a poet.So make sure you retain those 900 somewhere safe

PS-- I have another novel in the go which features the last Lighthouse keeper of Southampton, Ontario. I researched the duties of the keepers. Daily, they entered information into their logbooks: the weather, what they did, things they observed whatever... those logbooks have been archived. I'd so love to read one...

In some sense, my poetry is a diary, because I am often inspired by something I see and do, especially when I am out in nature. But some poems are just written on a contest prompt, and some very personal poems had to wait for a long time until I have developed enough distance to feel comfortable sharing, so the timeline would be definitely off. Experiences I am now ready to write about with sufficient perspective may have occurred many years ago.

Brian, I think that for many of us, our poetry is a diary in some ways. Mine is more a diary of what kinds of contests have been offered by Soup members. haha. However, among those contest entries, facets of my life are shown. I keep my poetry in bi-annual files. I suppose I could go through each file and pick out the poems that are the very personal ones. However, I do not think they are truly much of a "diary." For poets whose poetry is all about their life concerns and emotions, I think their own files would seem more like a diary of sorts! In any event, It's wonderful to have the files and the ones made for us here by Soup, so conveniently organized by forms too if we so desire!

Andrea I am impressed with your organisation !! as Keith says below your bi-annuals are a kind of ' photo album in wotrds

I have never kept a conventional diary Brian but since I started writing when my hubby had his cancer surgery I know there is a lot of my recent life experiences documented in some my poems. I find it so therapeutic to write especially humourous poems just to make other folks smile for a while:-) hugs Jan xx
