(Click for Poet Info...)

Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

A Great Night at Soup/ My mom

Blog Posted by Andrea Dietrich: 12/20/2010 9:14:00 PM
Hi, fellow Super duper Soupers. My heart was full tonight reading so many poems. Sad, funny, real life, deep, all kinds I saw. I spent a long time here because I am not sure I will be here  much in the next several days. My mom is flying in to visit us here in Utah (from the state where I grew up, Iowa, (on which I based my poem "Take Me Home." ) She is nearly 80 and fit as a fiddle! My mom is a cleanaholic too. I wonder if she might do some deep cleaning for me when she is here. hahaha. One thing I will do is take her to Barnes and Nobles. A long time back, I won a gift card from Barbara Gorelick and I will have my mom use it to buy herself a book. My mother instilled in me a strong love of reading from the many nights she read me stories when I was a child. She and I are very different people. For example, I love suspense and Stephen King type stories while she prefers stories of a spiritual nature. But we both love DRAMA and maybe I can find some movies we will both love seeing together!

I'm also excited because my son and his fiance will get to meet my mother at a brunch at my house Christmas day. I'm making Spanish potato omelets.Jeremy's fiance is a cook and will bring many special dishes! I will try to get my mom to make her wonderful frosted cinnamon rolls. What do you guys have planned for Christmas day? Is there anyone extra special coming to share the day with you? Do you have something different planned this year? I just want to say how much I enjoy being here day after day. Hope to keep coming here even with my mom here until the New Year! Thanks for being such great friends and have a very Merry Christmas!!

I just read all your comments, guys.JUST wonderful!! And Constance, what a dear to enjoy Christmas that way with the needy,And wow, Wilma, you are a Christmas baby!!Guess what happened?? I woke up extra early & saw the power was off!! The street was a little deep with snow and snow cleaners had not come. I needed to leave in an hour and drive to airport, but could barely see in dark and my garage door I couldn't open (I know it can be done manually but I don't have a clue how to do that) Hubbie is out driving till tonight. Thank goodness for a wonderful daughter who could drive to the airport in my stead. I just dropped by to say hi and now I am going to my daughter's house (power is back on) IF I can get my car over the tiny hill in front of our house. The streets are still not very good. Wish me luck!! Andrea

I will share my Christmas Day, with the frail and old, and in some cases the forgotten, in the long term care facility where I work as a Geriatric Nurse. So many have no one left or the family does not care and we become their family. I have little presents for each and the facility does also. My prayer for Christmas Day is that "none" leave for heaven on this day, but there is usually one angel created on this holiest of days~~

Have a great holiday with your family... we are low-keying it and cocooning as we usually do, no desire to party or see anyone, desperately need relief from a stressful job and work people.

Merry Christmas to you too Andrea and have a great time with your mom. My Christmas will not be unusual this year but we always have lots to celebrate. This year it is our set of twins. I have my house decorated but no tree because of my new kitty. Next year he should have settled down and lost some of his unruliness. Love, Joyce
