If Only

If only we could savor
the sweet flavor of love.
As she first wins him with her spirit,
or as his smile makes her forgot the pain.

If only we could remember,
the shock of skin touching skin,
or the taste of wanting lips,
and the rise and fall of labored breathing.

If only we could keep our word
and never fall asleep angry
or leave the others side.
We would never make the other change,
because we both know the pain.

Maybe then when we said I love you,
and looked deeply into each others eyes,
there would be no insecurity,
no reason for criticism,
and no need to say goodbye.
