Cute

Little girls, little hands, little hearts
treated like porcelain from the start.
We must shield their bodies,
spare their sweet minds,
give them a man to hide behind.

Dolls with painted smiles and perfect teeth
hair braided tightly like a wreath
Unchanging eyes, bright like the sun
arms and legs created only for fun,
treated nothing like any son.

Manners are all that matters,
only be eloquent if it flatters.
Though a bright mind, don’t show pride,
you must be polite to be a bride
take insults to your intelligence in stride.

Parents hope for nothing more,
than to brag about the girls they bore.
But the only questions asked
have to do with a girls past
and the family she has amassed.

How does anyone expect females
to believe they are anything but frail?
Raised to be compliant,
to always be pliant,
but never self-reliant.

Please don’t raise girls to be weak
many times this outcome is bleak.
Raise your girls to be resolute,
don’t force their opinions to be mute,
girls are not supposed to be just cute.

If Only

If only we could savor
the sweet flavor of love.
As she first wins him with her spirit,
or as his smile makes her forgot the pain.

If only we could remember,
the shock of skin touching skin,
or the taste of wanting lips,
and the rise and fall of labored breathing.

If only we could keep our word
and never fall asleep angry
or leave the others side.
We would never make the other change,
because we both know the pain.

Maybe then when we said I love you,
and looked deeply into each others eyes,
there would be no insecurity,
no reason for criticism,
and no need to say goodbye.
