Dear Dad

Dear Dad,
They say that you can forgive but never forget,
But how am I supposed to forgive when you and I have never really met?
Only seen you twice in the last 5 years
Some Days it takes everything in me just to hold back the tears
Dear Dad,
When those words came off your tongue that day through the phone, It made it all real
I was so overwhelmed, and I didn't know what to feel.
You’d been here and there for years now, but your gonna be in a different state
Now I'm sitting here with a birthday card that's 3 years too late
Dear Father,
It’s me, your only daughter, how’s life?
Because I just started college
But last I heard, you did too
God, I wish you could understand what you put me through
You know...
Something I will never understand is how through all of the pain and tears
I can still love a stranger.
A stranger that I’m supposed to call my father
But never calls
And maybe that's my fault because
when you did I never wanted to talk to you.
You're a stranger that's constantly saying you love me
And I feel like I’m being selfish by pushing you away
But aren't you already?
Only 6 months you said, you're gonna get better
and here we are 4 years later
So much has changed except your behavior.
I was only 5 years old that day I waited at the police station with some lady I didn’t even know
And not once did I ever ask the question where did daddy go?

Thanks for sharing this. Welcome to Poetry Soup. I welcome you with the love of the Lord, expressed by John 3:16 of the Bible, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." God bless you. (By the way, being a registered social worker in a church orphanage, I empathize with you.... I tell our kids, GOD is the greatest and best DAD).
