Oh Glorious Poinciana

Oh Glorious Poinciana

Bright flames of the Poinciana
Reach out for the golden sun
The large leaves bend with their tiny fronds
To wave with the wind in fun.

The bulging lime green buds
Stand upright as if to say
Just look at me I’ll soon be open
I’m ready to be on my way.

Such flaming red ‘gainst the lush green palette
Inspires the artist’s brush
And warms the heart of those who see
God’s beauty despite life’s rush

It’s magnificent canopy of red
Gives shelter from the blazing sun
On the ground is a carpet so bright on green grass
Velvet touch to bare feet as you pass.

Each flor’ holds out it’s skirt wide
Showing an apron of white
With splashes of red, its such a delight
To see such a wonderful sight.

The birds sing their song top your branches
The bees do their work with the pollen
Then come the seeds as the pods hang low
Waiting for children to rattle them.

Oh Glorious Poinciana
You welcome with arms stretched wide
You dress the Jamaican hills and seaside
For our pleasure from mid July.

Midnight Romance

How bright your eyes of cerulean blue
Look out from your porcelain face my dear
I saw those ivory teeth and I knew
That crimson blood would be flowing right here

Your cloak matches your obsidian brows
Absinthe is the green the grass we lie on
Love burning like charcoal as we carouse
Making our love last way before the dawn

Your sable hair reminds me of honey
And I crush my lips to yours oh so soft
I know that this is better than money
But do you agree? I noticed you coughed

Ash of roses the color I evoke
Before leaving you in a puff of smoke

On Confidence

ON CONFIDENCE

Trust comes from letting go of fear
Release these bonds they keep you there
The wings of faith will let you rise
Above the negative thoughts and lies.

Be explicit in saying what you desire
Dedication and focus will get you higher
Give thanks and expect a positive result
Then you realize it wasn’t that difficult.

Your thoughts have much power and energy
Which create your experience and identity
Because “as a man thinketh, so is he”
Be conscious and know that’s what you’ll see

Step into your blocks and run your race
Confidence always gets you first place
You have worked hard and passed the test
So go out there and show them your best.

They’ve taped and studied your every move
Hoping they’ll get the very same groove
They visit ask questions do a DNA test
In the quest for answers why you’re the best.

They come with a vengeance, they cannot see why
This tiny country should be passing them by
So know you’ll be challenged in a very real way
For Beijing left a mystery unsolved to this day

Thoughts of a Jamaican Christmas

THOUGHTS OF A JAMAICAN CHRISTMAS

I remember Christmas of yesteryear
Of John Canoe dancing with fife and drum
Horsehead would approach, it was scary but fun
And Scrippy scrappy looked like a real bum

Of Christmas breeze and Poinsettias red
Mixed with white Euphorbias in the flower bed
A visit to Nathans for cloth to make dresses
And drop curls all round my head for my tresses

I liked going downtown on Christmas Eve
Where the bustle of King Street was hard to believe
With balloons and horns, and pretty hats to choose
And noisy rattles to drive our parents to booze

Vendors lined the sidewalks their offerings laid bare
There were shouts for attention but nothing to fear
Next came a visit to Dixon’s Toy Shop
Where I didn’t want the choosing to stop.

Christmas Carols rang out through the air
Then at church the next morning with voices clear
Back home we were greeted with eggnog, and were free
To open our presents that were under the tree

At Christmas dinner our relatives we’d see
As the Miller clan gathered it was exiting for me
There was exchange of gifts and the joy of giving
It was really a great and wonderful feeling

The food was a spread of delectable flavors
Of turkey, rice and peas, sweet potato and lamb
Ackee and salt fish, roast beef, salad and ham
And I just can’t forget the Cranberry jam

The variety was great, too many to mention
And the carving of the turkey got everyone’s attention
But best of all was the sorrel, Christmas pudding or cake
Which gave us kids a chance to get tipsy or flake.

At night we brought out our starlights and clappers
The boys would light thunderbolts and we would run backwards
These memories are happy, in my mind they will stay
And I blend them with those we are experiencing today.

Montego Bay

Imagine creamy white sands and crystal clear sea
Warm sun bathes your back as you wander free
Your hammock is swaying to the great Reggae beat
That fills the air with rhythm so sweet.

Montego Bay is the place to be at
You are welcome, how ‘bout a friendly chat
Leave all your troubles come join the fun
Our music is special we can’t be outdone.

The people are nice, and the land is fair
Come mingle with us, we love visitors here
Swing your hips to the carnival beat
Enjoy real warmth as you meet and greet

Pick fruits from the trees as you take a farm tour
Go rafting and sailing and skiing and more
It’s a wonderful place for honeymooners they say
See how the sun sets down in the Bay.

The palm tress sway in the pale moonlight
While the coffee rose sweetens the peaceful night.
Come see our white sands and turquoise seas
Lie on the beach and relax with ease.

We have mountains to climb and rivers to raft
And vendors exhibit their Jamaican craft
Out of many, one people we say
And that’s what you’ll find in Montego Bay.

Consciously Exploring My Purpose

Consciously exploring my Purpose

I am spirit having a human existence, that, I can clearly see
I am here for a special reason, for there is no other like me
As I evolve I seek my purpose, and am consciously exploring
With special attention to my talents and where my life is going.

My thoughts are really powerful, so I try to be constructive
This vibrational energy is real so is best when in the affirmative
There is abundance all around me of love and peace and health
Opportunities flourish so I channel them to my wealth.

Wherever I put attention and focus this produces my reality
So for my actions and communications I take full responsibility
I give thanks for all my blessings, I find them as I reflect
This attitude of gratitude brings the abundance I expect

I give willingly and it often returns to me ten fold
My love is unconditional and I believe that’s better than Gold
I teach people how I want to be treated and forgive intentionally
I honour my values and attitudes and help others continually

I respect those in authority to their wisdom I give much value
I show empathy to my peers and give a listening where it’s due
I divide my time between work, rest and play
And plan my priorities in a very special way.

People I meet along my journey may participate someway
But I must consciously decide the part I allow them to play
This way I am being responsible for the life that I create
With guidance from the Master in whom I put my fate.

Bienvenido

Nestled in the hills, with panoramic view
Of hills and valleys and skies of blue
I sit on the porch in the morning hours
And listen to the birds and enjoy the flowers.

Sometimes the wind is all that I hear
It is quiet and calm beyond compare
A meditative energy fills the air
And fond memories emerge
That I hold so dear

At first there was the patter of tiny feet
Happy laughter and voices of children so sweet
Then there was swimming in the pool with our friends
And barbecues and music and dance on weekends

But the Ivy covered entrance with its secret garden
With fish in the fountain and brightly coloured Croton
Is where I linger to replenish me
And escape from the chaos and noise to be free.

The expansive lawns give a feeling of space
To wander and delight in the flora of the place
There is bright beaugainvillia, many colours to see
And Alamandas and coffee Rose and a blossoming tree

The Poinciana tree with its flagrant red
Forms a canopy so beautiful I’ve often said
T’is the best, but then there’s the Poui laden with flowers
So delicate and exotic, I could stare for hours

A variety of palms, some standing tall, some like a fan
Make their presence felt, they were part of the plan
It’s a place to turn inwards and nurture the soul
And ask if you are playing a fulfilling role.

A Child Is Born

A CHILD IS BORN

Who am I, why am I here ?
I felt myself being squeezed
And then I was being pushed
Towards a bright shining light
I came out of the water
And cried out, I was cold
I see objects moving
And hear people’s voices

Suddenly I hear a voice
I think I heard before
That feels good in all this strangeness
But why does it make me anxious?
Then I recall those adrenalin moments
When that voice was angry and aggressive
It was then I felt the racing of my heart
And a nervousness in my stomach.

But then someone cuddled me close
And loving eyes look into mine
She kisses my forehead
And then strokes my cheek
That familiar voice again, loving and sweet
Soothes me as I search for something to eat
She puts me to her breast, this is heaven sent
This must be my mother, I feel so content.

This poem was written to make parents aware that the foetus hears and is sensitive to moods and emotions of the mother from 4 months of gestation.

Nothing Is the Same

NOTHING IS THE SAME

Nothing is the same since you went away
If we meet again someday, what will my heart say?
Right now I feel an emptiness, how long will that remain?
I only know the pain is there again and again.

I miss our conversations, my pleasure when you’d say
“How’s the love of my life” That really made my day.
So many moments I recall of adventure and real joy
Why did you think this happiness was something to destroy

Birthday gifts and thoughtful cards showed how much you cared
It just seems there’s nothing that we had not shared
I still feel the love it won’t go away, have you really moved on?
I ask myself time and again, could that love be gone.

Nothing is the same I cry nothing is the same
Changes, changes all around, should I take the blame
Sometimes I wonder should I play the waiting game
My better judgment says, this love I can’t reclaim.

My aching heart is heavy, as I long for your embrace
Wondering if someone else has now taken my place
It seems no words can express the hurt I feel today
‘Cause nothing is the same since you went away.

Autumn

AUTUMN

A brisk chill in the air
Reminds me Christmas will soon be here
My thoughts take a leap to Jamaica
To warmth and family and friendly gala.

The dark red of the trees
Remind me of sorrel drink
And the yellows of bright shining sun
For a moment there is a longing

But the beauty of nature’s palette
Takes my attention away
To focus on the colours of autumn
As the trees make their awesome display

Some trees are covered in Yellow
Sometimes they are totally red
There’s variety of colours as leaves change their green
One never knows what is ahead.

The Evergreens feature, not to be outdone
And the Holly’s shiny leaves give everyone a run
But the assortment of colours brings warmth to my heart
And I feel peaceful as I enjoy nature’s Art.

A single leaf trembles, hanging just by a thread
I watch as it flutters down to its bed
A wind whips up and leaves fall like rain
The scenery changes again and again

Reflections of autumn show the rhythms of life
Of circles and seasons and daylight and night
As trees become bare and winter sets in,
Until spring emerges and new life begins.
