The Watched

A wave of uneasiness
Swept over me;
Something unsettled
My being.

With heightened senses
I felt the heat of the gaze
Anchor unto me,
Steadfast.

Turning to see
That which was watching me,
I froze in fear
As it stared at me.

Feet as roots;
Body fought mind.
Eyes swell, jaw drops;
He approaches me.

The breathing first
And then the drum,
Before I knew
I was on the run.

With unknown speed
I fled that day,
Instincts prevailed,
I got away.

Cupid's Con

My Cynthia gone,
Now dead to me.
Wondrous beauty –
Eyes of an Angel,
Heart of Gold.

She knew her power,
I let her.
Beginning of the end.

Skydiving from the moon to
Hades itself.
Impossible ecstasy,
Unfathomable loss.

The arrow dislodged
from her alone.
A pawn to her whims.
But I have a new goddess now,
And the spell is almost broken.

Reveal Unto Me

I see the good in it
I see the reason
Yet no matter how hard I search
I cannot confide, or believe this lie.
For a time long ago
It had its place but
Faithless I remain; no old book will
Convince me, public prayer
Or traditions ancient.

He was a clever man,
No doubt he lived, and
Convinced himself too.
Yet I wager my soul
In your fiery lakes
That I am right,
And you are wrong.
You must pity me?
But can I forgive, your blind devotion?

That has a very high price indeed,
War, corruption & judgement.
Three among throngs.
I cannot understand
The reason for withholding
Your Truth,
Where is your love, jealous God
In this pointless test of time?

I am a good man;
It’s an honest life I live,
Answer to none but myself,
Cause harm to nothing.
Your eternal death sentence
On my soul,
Is an evil itself,
And I want no part of it.
Your rewards may be great
And my suffering eternal, but
Your God is wicked,
And I am free

The Human Chair

Shackled to poverty,
An idle thinker,
   Only myself to blame,
Imprisoned in this suit.

In these woods, in that park.
Free only to roam and wonder.
   Solitary confinement in this crowd.
The flame of hope flickers,
But the wick is almost spent.
Foolish choices sit me here.

Fortuna saved me once,
I will never forget a vow fulfilled.
She will see me through.
   As Phoebus scorches me,
I seek shelter again,
- No one must know my secret.

Tom Cat

Little Lion who purrs so loud,
He has made his family proud.
What a mouser is this cat
Even though he’s rather fat.

Birds, mice and even a big Rabbit
All food for Tom; it’s his favourite habit.
Don’t rub his tummy or he’s sure to bite,
Three Alsatians once gave him a fright.

He is a cat very wise,
Even though he’s used his lives.
Tom resides in his little shed,
Where he nestles in his bed.

No other pet can compare,
To our cat of the brown and white fur.

Normaility

To do the same as your neighbour,
Though dull as ditchwater,
To love, wed, indebt and procreate,
To dread waking up, to hate your life,
To want what others have,
To expedite your own demise,
To drink and smoke, indulge and scoff,
To judge those worse than you,
To be afraid of life and death,
To bask in burning rays.
To avoid the Grave.
Is it normal to write this poem?
When abnormality is common place,
Who then is normal?

Questions

What is mine to wonder why?
Alone to think and feel alive.

To ask this question time and again,
To beg for that which I cannot obtain.

Universally selfish we want to know,
Which way is it that I will go?

To hope and pray without delay,
That I alone will be shown the way.

The Gamble

Would you take this Gamble?
Perhaps you have, unbeknownst,
Lured by the Aces and the chance.

Dealt a bag of nails,
Impossible to bluff,
A hard life awaits you now.

You could be a king, a living God,
Love may even find you.
Not dissuaded by a sufferer’s fate,

You roll these heavy dice.
And how did they land?
Luckily most get another chance,

Once they have seen their hand,
But only if they know they are playing.

The Hold

A Mug’s game
I know the facts,
The odds stacked
Against me.

Yet I dig deeper into my
Shallow pockets,
Hunting the
Elusive Jackpot.

The high’s so dizzy,
A rush of blood,
A deserved win,
Just to lose it later.

Unparalleled lows;
Falling from Olympus.
Instant depression,
Shame, regret, disgust.

Momentarily up,
American dream at last!
Won’t walk away now;
I can afford to gamble again.

So taxing to stop,
I must control me.
I will give up;
I’ll bet you I do.
