The Watched

A wave of uneasiness
Swept over me;
Something unsettled
My being.

With heightened senses
I felt the heat of the gaze
Anchor unto me,
Steadfast.

Turning to see
That which was watching me,
I froze in fear
As it stared at me.

Feet as roots;
Body fought mind.
Eyes swell, jaw drops;
He approaches me.

The breathing first
And then the drum,
Before I knew
I was on the run.

With unknown speed
I fled that day,
Instincts prevailed,
I got away.
