Mediocrity In My Nation

In this modern day world where being average is applauded,
Wannabe’s and the fame hungry incomprehensibly rewarded.
These days it seems the talent less succeed,
Their lack of skills, and humility, beaten by only their greed.

The young and indulgent, saying ‘I want to be different’,
If only they could see their words inconsistent,
For if they truly meant what they said,
Then they surely would do something else instead,
A doctor, a scientist, an architect maybe,
These jobs are ‘different’!…or perhaps that’s just me?!!

Wouldn’t it be great to find a cure for cancer,
‘nah’ say these kids, ‘I wannabe a dancer’,
Well then how about being the next Albert Einstein,
‘no thanks, I’ll marry a footballer, his money will be mine!‘.

‘Celebrities’ intelligence, seemingly minimal,
Look at their lifestyles, their luxuries criminal,
And just how do they go about getting these things,
Often by showing their breast and belly button rings.

These comments harsh…in some cases untrue,
Some have skill and work hard at what they do,
But watching the news brings total frustration,
Gone are the days when I was proud of my nation.
.
Go out get a job, work hard and graft,
Not like so many, living off mum’s overdraft,
Kids and benefits, a modern day goal,
No wonder my country has lost its soul….

Beauty of the Cosmos

Looking out at the beauty of a star filled sky,
Dreaming of the millennia which have flown by.
Trying to comprehend the vast expanse,
Endless, unthinkable it holds me in a trance.

The pain experienced on our own little earth,
Increasing over time with each new birth,
Times this by a billion, a trillion maybe,
That is what the universe must undoubtedly see.

Such beauty have the stars, seeing so much in a glance,
Performing their waltz, their everlasting dance,
The planets, the comets, the meteorites too,
So much beauty for one’s eyes to view.

Are we humans really a lonely band,
Or will we yet see an alien hand,
Perhaps a new species will come shooting by,
Who notice the signals, forever leaving our sky.

Amazing, wonderful, enticing and vast,
Looking at the stars is looking to the past
A real life time machine, a real life mystery,
Look at its depths to see all times history.

Perhaps in the future, maybe we’ll find,
There’s more to this universe than just our kind
But aliens are debateable, our future is too,
One thing for certain is the beauty of you.

Secret Confession

Surrounded by loved ones,
Never able to explain,
Destined to be alone
Constantly in pain…

'Inside I’m slowly dying’,
A line I once heard in a song,
So true it rings inside the deepest parts of my soul,
A soul I don’t believe exists.
Atheist to the core, once my few years of life ends I will leave this universe,
Unable to witness the countless eons to follow.

Often I think of how cruel evolution has been,
With such intelligence I have come to this conclusion,
We, mankind can never be truly happy,
For despite what life brings to us,
One thing is certain to follow everything…nothingness,
An eternity of complete and utter non existence.

Despite everything else,
Everyone we ever care about eventually goes to meet our so called maker,
This for me is unacceptable,
For the sorrow I feel has, and will always be far greater than any happiness I can imagine.

Grown into a strong man, tough and popular,
Why do I feel the pain of any suffering creature?,
Why do I shed a secret tear when reading the arbitraries of people I have never met?,
Or why does my heart ache just at the thought of the billions of tears cried since our first steps on the savannah?,

Constant internal conflict,
Wishing I could live for ever,
then never have lived at all,
Despising masses, even whole nations,
Yet caring for individuals.

A good job, good health, good friends and family and yet sorrow,
Only ever experiencing fleeting happiness,
Often beaten back by a tremendous pain,
A pain I have no right to claim,
Not when millions have lives much harder than I have ever experienced,
Yet I do.

This is my secret confession,
Surrounded by loved ones,
Never able to explain,
Destined to be alone
Constantly in pain…
