Ode To My Boat

On a sunny day
You give me shade
You carry me
Throughout the waters
Taking me where I must go

On a winters day
You give me shelter
Keeping me warm
In a sky
Full of wind and storm

On a good day
We sail
We laugh
We dance on the fields of ocean
Without a care
Or cloud in the sky

On a bad day we wait
For the storm to pass
And you keep me afloat
When I cannot swim

When the day comes
That you cannot sail
Or cannot dance
I will lay with you
And wait
For your wooden frames
To come apart

And I will sing to you
As the storm
Comes
To pull you in

Moonlight

Running from the snow-covered mountain
in a thin blue shirt
that welcomes the cold

Running to the ocean that lays years away
The neck of a large blue heron looks over in fear
it calls out like a single note blown from a clarinet
then it runs away.

Running to the door that sits alone in the dark
The lips of a cat open to release a curious hello
it enters the door, waiting to see if anyone will follow
then it runs away.

Running to the aspen tree that lie ahead
Snow cakes it leaves like crystalizing sugar
The branches sway in the current of the night

Out of breath and halted by the frozen air
I stop to find the moon
It sits above me shining on the path that lay ahead
I look around to ensure I am alone
and then I run away.

Sailor

Away at sea
All she can think about
Is him

The way his eyes
Follow her
And never let her stray too far

The way his lips
Brush against her ear
And whisper promises
Of adoration

The way his fingers
Grab her waist
Ensuring she is
Not alone

But when she returns
Knotted in his embrace
All she can think about
Is the ocean

The way the current
Carries her past
Where she’s ever been before

The way the waves
Strike upon her legs
Stinging her skin
Awakening her soul

The way the horizon
Lays faultlessly ahead
Reminding her
She is distant
From any other soul

So she leaves
His eyes
His lips
His fingers
The warmth of his grasp
For the wrath of the sea

Forbidden

He comes to me
a moonlit silhouette.
My fingers dance along his face like spiders
ensuring I’m not asleep.
I pull him in and feel his heart
beating slightly quicker than mine.

Our love is not enough
to end the wars,
to break down the walls,
to solve what cannot be solved;
We stop.

His silken lips reach for mine
and for a moment
we are the only ones alive.
But the magnets between us
are now at opposite poles.

I look into his eyes-
a small blue bird drowning in an ocean of pain.
The same pain that is swallowing my heart.

The magnet grows stronger
pushing us apart.
But not before I say his name
one last time
Romeo.

Dangerous Wings

1/3/2019

Laying within the walls
Of a young child’s hand
A trapped moth
Longs for release

The child plays
Dancing in the grass
And a yellow flower
Calls her close

In a moment of diversion
She frees the moth
Allowing it to dance
and explore the sky

With freedom its wings grow
Reaching for the sun
Bathing in the clouds
Feeling what it’s like
To live outside the walls

But when it goes too high
The sun burns its chest
And it cannot breathe

Forced to come down
The moth does not know
Where to go
Or where to land

So it falls
Longing for the hands
Of the child
Dancing in the grass

Firsts

each novelty
a penny in a jar
adding up
to who we now are

even when it’s full
you cannot start new
fresh experiences
start becoming few

again in our head
they play and they play
what can’t be lost
we wish would go away

so we settle
to forget the riveting firsts
doing everything we can
to numb our hopeless thirsts

Snakes

Snakes

They’ll lay with you
Tracing skeletons
Whispering songs
To let them in

You say no
Who could trust a snake?
But the more you lay together
Your heart is not so scared

It cracks open
Slightly
Just enough
For the snake to slip right in

In the moment
Before it flees
Your heart feels whole
Like the crack
Was always meant to be

Mind Games

Trapped in a space
Of unease
Surrounded by isolation
You cannot leave
It follows you
It is you
The demons you create
The thoughts you debate
There is no escape
When the world you live in
Is the world you make

Together

Alone together
Hearing music play
Words I wish
I could say to you

I think you felt it too
The way our hearts touched
Through the bones
Trying to cage them in

My Amphetamine

I see your face
In a crowd of skeletons
You don’t see me
Hiding behind them all

My heart starts to run
Sprinting in circles
Back and forth
A caged animal released
Not quite sure where to go

You see me
For a second your eyes lock with mine
Followed by a gentle grin

Warmth and desire
Floods my body
Blood rushing through every vessel
Veins pumping every which way

But then you’re lost amongst them all
And I’m left out of breath
Wondering
Where I’ll see you next
How to get another fix
