Firsts

each novelty
a penny in a jar
adding up
to who we now are

even when it’s full
you cannot start new
fresh experiences
start becoming few

again in our head
they play and they play
what can’t be lost
we wish would go away

so we settle
to forget the riveting firsts
doing everything we can
to numb our hopeless thirsts
