My arrival beat the sunrise;
it was still dark at the small jetty.
I dried the wet skiff, mind alert
to the soon to be lifting light.
Nearby,
an unseen water bird
clattered into the darkness.
Startled, I looked up,
there above me
a hole in that lightless sky
a circle of glowing orange
surrounded by the dim dawn.
‘I am blessed’ I thought.
As I gazed, the heavens opened,
a deluge of blacked-out rain smashed down
upon the sleeping land.
I got under the down-turned boat
and lay down
as the Ohio river faded away
replaced by a raging waterfall,
one that obliterated
that same sunrise
that had yet to show up -
until at last
that early bird I had heard
flew back to my ears and minds-eye.
Emerging from my makeshift shelter
I watched a rare black swan
settle and preen, drying its feathers,
as if it was perfectly natural
for a river to drown itself
under a small, up-side-down skiff.
I could lie twas Salma
Who made I edit my note
A love note it was a rem1
Reminder with a Coordinate
Coordinates do come home
I pleaded heard turning into ice
Starlet breezing without a care
Re-ignited the flames of drama
Mtanga an African love story..
At the stadium of heroes Gee Tanga
Led you the way in a Month of love
Kaayan did I utter your name the 4thM

Suddenly Swans
I was at a lake, so beautiful lake and just before sunset;
There arose in the timid cooling waters a royal bird;
Genera Cygnus so lovely long neck with webbed feet;
Grace and beauty associated with love, music, and poetry-word;
Sacred to Venus, the goddess of love;
Related to Anserinae in the family Anatidae;
This bird is often pictured singing to a lyre;
As I walk on in the waters there’re …Suddenly Swans;

As the lakes edge suddenly, suddenly swans;
Such a vivid pretty picture;

The giraffe
Haughty and fond of herbivorous feasts,
Tends to look down on his wee fellow beasts.
The elephant
Thin outer ears are gargantuan-sized,
Tickling the ivories isn't advised.
The pelican
Genus of water-bird with a long beak,
And in his throat there is food for a week.
The crocodile
Don't you be fooled by his sad, tearful eyes
He's out to get you - it's just a disguise.
The zebra
Sports a moheccan style tuft on his head
And he wears stripey pyjamas to bed.
The panda
Never one fazed by what's wrong or what's right,
Tends to see everything in black and white.
The kangaroo
He lives 'down under'- Australia's pride
With little Joey who's there for the ride.
The zoo
All of these creatures hang out at the zoo
Feeding time heralds a hullabaloo!

A Vet’s Friday
A sparrow was picking insects on the road a car came, the bird nearly
got away, but was hit by the car’s wing mirror I stopped dismounted
and picked it up. It looked stunned gasping for air. Put the bird on
the shady, grassy verge, waited for it to recover, and to see it fly away.
Afar, behind the mountain range, smoke two helicopters with big bags
of water hanging underneath are flying towards the forest fire.
The countryside is dry yet the sun goes on shining hot and spiteful.
I look at the sparrow it had overcome and died with an open beak; and
I was the only witness. My effort to be a rescuer and a hero in my own
vanity had failed, was it my heavy hands that had shocked it to death.
Nothing more to do I can’t stay here all day looking at a dead bird.
The helicopters are returning to fill those enormous bags with water in
a nearby lake and sparrows do as they must pick insects off the road
while we wait for rain.
