Voyagers

The old ship
rust stripped like a Sudanese mule
doomed to carry fleeing people across
a landscape of despair
Why, she floats is a lasting mystery
From one obscure port to another
she finds her way
The captain and the chief are never sober
plays ten-cent poker
The captain signs the manifesto but takes
no interest, what's in the ship's hold

But in the end they

tied one to one
when gales blow
and far from home
Come count the stars
and scan the shimmering horizon
Come share the brazier’s glow
plain rations for a feast
laugh with companions
Adventure stirs our bones
Pain and fear we choose

Voyagers

I've traveled this road before.
Maybe it was in a dream, but I don't think so.
I remember too well the cold pavement
Beneath bare feet and walking
Toward the water color moon.
The road was deserted, except for thoughts
And emotions that seemed to swirl
All around then land in the snow by the wayside.
I remember, too, feeling alone and
Miniscule compared
