THE LOST SOLDIER'S LOVER
Her heart plays bellows to heighten nightly fires of solitude,
Playful flames of terror taunt a dancing flicker of despair
New dawn's burning pain --kindling knowledge of love's certain loss.
What false anticipation promises the quiet cool of healing?
Why does a fragile unscorched hope cling desperately
When her only healing balm lay ever hidden---
Blown astray as ashes in a far and thankless land?

Shed on that certain kind of warmth
You give the waters that washed away our footsteps
Illumine the dark leaves of our past
Blown away by the indifferent breeze.
Desiccate the grass that invited conversations
But leave the roots unscorched.
I prayed to Autumn to blow away my pains
But Winter entertained me instead.
I won’t let Spring visit me
Until you burn down her cold heart, Summer.

Joseph’s brothers hated him
But God delivered him from the pit
Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego
Thrown into a fiery furnace lit
Intended to kill them in an instant
But God delivered them from the flames
Unscorched by the fire
Obedience to God, even fire tames
Daniel was thrown to the hungry lions
Because He prayed daily to his Father
But God’s angels closed the lions’ mouths
To consume his enemies they’d rather
David could have killed Saul
Who was seeking his life to kill
But God’s Spirit told him not to
David displayed to God goodwill
Jacob stole Esau’s inherent blessing
But God, the twin brothers reconciled
Nothing but a miracle
Jacob’s repentance undefiled
Job lost everything
Except his wife of many years
But God gave him more children
Doubled his worldly wealth and wares
God can do anything
For everything to man he gives
Because God is a “but” God
He also freely forgives.
