Barn owl gave up on finding a barn in Topeka country side.
He kept finding one, but it was occupied by a groom or bride.
A flower patch welcomed him, where he sat down and cried.
Until another barn owl discovered him and welcomed him inside.
Now he and his bride have a fine barn with a roof and such.
He still thanks the flower patch yearly, and very much.
They gave him a place to wait for his lovely bride to discover.
And now he has a flower patch, and also lovely winter cover.

It was 1857, civil tension on the rise,
And the dialogue on servitude found little compromise.
Justice Taney cited precedent in making his decree:
“A slave is not a citizen; it’s private property.”
Nine old white men in a smelly, smoke-filled room;
Nine old white men won’t be granting freedom soon.
It happened end of century, in 1896,
When Plessey versus Ferguson administered the fix.
Majority opinion took a Jim Crow frame of mind,
John Harlan’s lone dissent implored, “We must be color blind!”
Nine old white men reckoned Jesus on their side.
Nine old white men ruled which railroad car you’d ride.
The end of war meant ’54 might promise better days.
With "I like Ike" and Howdy Doody masking our malaise.
The case came from Topeka; Warren took the Court to school.
Unanimous opinion would uphold the Golden Rule.
Nine old white men long delivered of their youth,
Searched their souls and found a universal truth.
Nine old white men not afraid to make a change
In the land of the free and the home of the strange.
The arc that bends toward Justice
May be daunting and prolonged,
But tends to sooth the progeny
Of those who have been wronged.

Route 66ish No 19
An incontinent guy from Topeka
Just wanted to be a bit sleeker
For each night he knew
He must run to the loo
If no dribbles he'd yell out “Eureka”!!

“On The Atchison Topeka And The Santa Fe”
This song is rolling round in my brain today
The Modernaires or Pied Pipers
Which group were the blighters
That made us sing along in a hap hap happy way

The dogs are banned from fields of green
lest anyone should “step in it”
yet 50 geese just landed there
and no one tells them where to “..it”
Masked bandits prowl the streets at night
trash can clamor in the alleyways
making their rounds on scheduled trips
coinciding with trash collection days.
Dawn’s silent rise cues “Places please”
dark curtain rising on a dissonant din
Daybreak’s un-tuned opening - wings without wind
scratching open eyelids that can’t close again.
Beneath soft silent moon – a courting joust
that sad horrific sound – a lover’s spat
a noise to make an air raid siren cringe
the hissing contest - suitors of my cat.
Lo, the glistening distance of train track
reflecting the history that they bore
reminds me that the four thirteen Topeka
lies beside me in a locomotive snore.

Been writing limericks since the day one
No special talents, just five lines of fun
Meet sweet people
From here to Topeka
Won't get famous but my words are well hung

Heavenly Music
Instead of all of them still yelling EUREKA
What they ended up with was TOPEKA
Kansas where banjoes they will strum
And State Capital will never become.
Would it to many make much sense?
If an Arabian actually lived in Laurence
On horse thinking he was hot to trot
With him all the women he brought.
While State of Kansas you were touring
Was worst thing you could be enduring
They said go ahead and get out of DODGE
Like there ain't no room at any lodge.
Suppose purple was color we all wore
Went to heaven and not here anymore
Would God always allow us to be musical
And if so should we bring an acoustical?

REDUNDANCY ON THE NEWS
First it was called a UFO in Kansas - eureka!
Then a UFO object in Kansas, near Topeka!
Later it was a UFO flying object (the terms are getting weaker)
Finally it became an unidentified flying UFO object(an identity seeker)
Ultimately no one could identify the unidentified flying UFO object.

Topeka alive
Shops, stores thrive
Like bees around hive
Look around; take dive
Great place to be
Shops and history
Amazing to see
Without much fee!
Drive around; look more
Not turn into bore
Interests galore
Hardly snore!
