My dog’s name is Thalia—
she barks when her tummy’s empty,
barks if she wants my attention,
and barks when a stranger wanders too near,
as if she owns the whole block.
One afternoon in the kitchen,
she just wouldn’t stop.
I figured—alright, food again—
so I scooped her a bowl.
But nope. Still barking her head off.
Curious, I went out to see what was going on.
And there she was—curled up on the sofa,
out cold, not a care in the world.
So… who was in my kitchen?
I was halfway to the car,
still trying to puzzle it out,
when a voice broke in—
“Wake up, Madison, we’re almost late!”
That’s when it hit me—
I’d been chasing a dream all along.
And like life itself,
it showed me that friends may be found anywhere,
but when the truth sinks in,
you see the ones who matter most
are those who’ve stood beside you
through thick and thin.

They call you Thalia, muse, your realm is comedy,
Though I have to admit that much of your humor
Is mostly Greek to me.
But we've been friends for years, since 1963,
And I hope, although, I'm no longer acting,
You haven't forgotten me.
I'm sending you this text now, please read it sans delay,
And R.S.V.P., "Jim, I'm on my way!"
Thala, be my muse for tonight.
You're the muse I choose to use for this write.
The stanzas are well-formed and lined up,
Now I need a solid wind-up,
So, come and amuse me tonight.
I'm begging you, please, one more time
'cause I'm really stuck for a rhyme.
You're a walking jokeapedia,
But I don't have time to read ya,
And I only need one lousy line.
The subject's rather controversial:
Is it okay to marry gay?
They're talking, pros and cons,
Quite a lot on the news,
But, are that many "cons" really gay?
Then, Thalia, when we edit this gem,
There may be one small item to trim.
There's a joke you may well weep at,
But if you laugh, we'll keep it.
Good reviews if you'll muse me tonight.

Her name is simply Thalia!
Does that sound unfamiliar?
A science foundation in an old city
Volunteering to tackle The Gritty,
Here in Nigeria accomplish
What her compatriots wish;
Like fingers not failed by triggers
The firm shovels of firm diggers,
Already reinforcing The Walls of Science
And up bracing Arochukwu’s commonsense;
The little left of her research courage
Long lost and becoming an adage …
Because, personally, I’d seen it all
Set rolling like A League’s Ball:
The many computers in the rooms they belong,
A skeleton I hope shall sing a song,
A Nutrition Lab promising superb cookery
And gas-cookers pledging no trickery;
Thalia’s control room for fishing prowlers out,
Sixteen screens for crooks to think about.
Arochukwu THALIA puts at an advantage
And her lips readies for vintage;
On the whole, a reason to love The White Man
And stop being astonished each time he can.

Oh, Thalia-muse of comedy…
If only you could make me smile
A joke might not come so easily
But humor’s seen in most every style.
Could I tempt you with some old slapstick?
Perhaps slip on a banana peel?
A sign on the back might do the trick
A pie in the face might make you squeal.
Could be a joke, I’ll give it a go
You must tell it first with a straight face
Building to the punch line it will grow
Then explode, frown gone without a trace.
Life can be funny, don’t you agree?
Thanks to Thalia-muse of comedy.
