Premium MemberLast Day Of School

He gathered his trash to put in the bin
His crimson math book the last to turn in
Peace will no longer rule
It's the last day of school
Now his summer adventure can begin

Premium MemberSummer to Fall

how the bright green leaves
fluttered - happy in the breeze
till grim Fall appeared
raked up leaves went to landfill
and students returned to school

Premium MemberFuneral of Fireflies

flash
spark
lights dark
court and spark
fireflies on a lark
flirting with their little lanterns
adorn the skies, and tease the eyes, with starlike patterns
school-kids savor in Summer, before that bare bummer, the firefly funeral in Fall

AN ENJOYED SUMMER DAY

Wow, what a great bath.
Frothing shores entertaining:
Warm body well hued.

Premium MemberReluctant to Let Go of the Freedom of Summer

sand in between my toes felt cool this morning
the temperature has changed, now it is gritty and hot
uncomfortable feelings now, I need a bath

I turn and look at the sea one last time
the beach is not as full today
people are dribbling off to college campuses

families are in line at shoe stores for new school shoes
summer is waving good-bye to all of us
she knows she will not see us again for a year

I am conflicted
wanting bonfires and football games
but reluctant to let go of the freedom of summer

A WINDY SUMMER DAY

Planes sailing the sky…
Waving trees shadow the sun…
Kid’s paper plane day…

Premium MemberThat Pause Between Summer and Autumn

School was out, setting her free in summer -
free to tell friends bye, be lonely and cry.
Tears would spill for a best friend of one year
who she had learned would in time forget her.
Most teens knew same place and faces through school.
Military brats do not live that truth.

Summer would decide her joy for school's start.
Parents choose suburbs, not an army base,
to be this year's school and friends starting place.
She hoped the house was in a neighborhood
with teens her same age to share summer skies,
then fall, winter and spring for her next page.

Premium MemberTHRILL OF LATE SUMMER

SEASONS NOW AND AFTER Poetry Contest
Nette Onclaud
8/8/25

As summer winds to an end, there's a pitch
Summer's last breath rocks with school-aged kids
Soon, the air will be filled with excitement
Like hens racing for corn at feeding time
College kids are racing off to their schools
With the new school year, friendships are renewed
Back-to-school shopping and clothes are noted
On-campus parties under the radar
Drawn lines in the sands, aphrodisiacs
And heaps of gossip, stories, rear their head
This yearly song finds all school kids singing
The thrill of late summer, school, brings sweet dreams

Premium MemberAutumn is Near

I'm at my keyboard as I remember
a long ago dawning of September.
Who would have thought that a once youthful lad
would encounter summer's end and be glad?
He enjoyed all the freedom and the play,
given a boy on each extended day.
But now, was ready to return to school,
a sentiment not oft' considered cool.
To see the posted list, to school he raced,
to find out in which class he would be placed.
and know - would he get the nicest teacher,
or the one like a black lagoon creature.

Premium MemberAn August Goodbye

A leonine sun of August's stately presence,
see the maple and oak leaves,
no longer a fresh green of youth.
Children will put their beach pails away,
when September's boughs drop acorns.

It's the closing chapter of the carefree months,
when sweethearts on the moonlit boardwalks
part.
I enjoyed iced coffee on the patio,
when the newly-mowed lawn days set us
to daydreaming,
watching wrens, bluebirds, sparrows,
in avian freedom,
my playing grandchildren soon will be
back in school.

Time for harvesting another summertide's
memories-
an August goodbye,
and hello to the aging man of autumn.
