EMIGRANT

The wake stretched from the bow  
Back towards the narrow, choked 
Canal  systems of Europe.
Goodbye to endless  locks now.

We were ready for  the new start.

Over the damp taffrail  - foam.
The sea was huge and empty.
And ahead lay the United States
And home.

I came to this new land
To this old continent 
Following my natural
Instinct
I did not hear sheers
No smile
No welcome signs
No fireworks
No one was there to receive me
Or to shake my hand 
As I anticipated
Except this sign
That says:
“NON-CITIZENS must cross this gate”

I came with no sense
Of attachment
Identity
Religious freedom
Love freedom
Big numbers
Freeing freedom
I am just seeking the warmth
I am looking  for
A piece of land
On the sun....
