Upon my face of earthenware
So many feet have laid bare
Maiolica wearing thin-
My colours now growing dim
Revealing my kaolin

Earthenware,
Gently coated with 24 karats,
Lungs, innards, entrails, liver,
The heart left untouched,
Untainted,
Egyptian burials,
Wrapped in cheesecloth.

A large round terracotta pot is broken.
It sits upright in the long grass.
where a slab of clay has crumbled away.
A tortoise dwells there now.
The cracked pot still provides shade
for that slow moving turtle.
At midday when no shadows play
it can still outrun the sun
in a small earthenware circle.

The curio shop
Where no one will stop,
Lives in its yesterday-dust;
A grandfather’s clock,
An earthenware crock,
And Time’s faintest aroma of must.
The brass button trays,
The bright feather sprays,
Languish like lovers ignored.
The years are for sale,
The bargains all fail,
And Time shuffles by, looking bored.

Broken
Broken hopes,
like tears of bitter glass.
Broken dreams
like thin ice in spring.
Broken fears
like bare November trees.
Broken dreams
like bursted windows.
Broken hopes of tomorrow
like old tiles of clay.
Broken yesterday's memories
like antique earthenware.
But who tossed the stone?

I do not know?
THIS VESSEL IS EMPTY
NOT A DROP IS LEFT FOR YOU
YOUR WORDS ARE ACID
TO MY HEART
GRAVEYARD PHILOSOPHY
STRAIGHT FROM THE LIZARD'S MOUTH
CLASSICAL HYPOCRISY
WITH MY GOTHIC REASON
I FOUND YOU
HARSH AND IMPENETREBLE
NOW YOU'VE GONE
AND LEFT ME FOR DEAD
AN IMMOBILE SPIRIT
HARVESTS NOTHING
UNPLUG MY TRAGIC HEART
FEED IT TO THE HUNGRY DOGS
DEAD GRASS, DEAD LOVE
SOMETIMES WE ALL GO NUMB.
RIP J

Not our lives but the wares we sell,
Not our faces but our masks,
Not our own voices, not our real bodies,
Not our names, but the brands we bear.
What we become in a vast alien time
Is how we are known to our fellows.
Not what we are but what we show,
Not our deep needs, not our real fears,
Not as we hurt but as we are hailed.
All we parade in the vast alien time,
All we have polished up for sale,
As if we are pieces of earthenware.
