Karen Carpenter
It’s only just begun
Desperate family
The Carpenters were fun
Closer to perfection
Like honey on your sleeve
They stuck together well
So happy we believed
Until it crumbled down
Her heart gave in so young...

We'Ve Only Just Begun
double tetractys
We've Only Just Begun, wedding staple,
like brides and grooms
musicians,
poets
bond.
Add
brilliant
performers,
the Carpenters,
and a simple tune becomes a classic.

The Carpenters
Karen and Richard were a famous duo from the 70s
Of course, I mean “The Carpenters” part of our musical heritage
Karen's soothing voice
Richard's keyboard rejoiced
With a selection of laid-back soft-rock melodies...

A Carpenters Hands
Splinters in his hands
The thorns of his profession
Wait to be removed
A dream comes to life
Under his hands it takes shape
Satisfaction reigns
He creates beauty
Wood yields to his artistry
A carpenter’s hands…
Eileen Manassian Ghali...

Unvarnished Wood
A dash of wood varnish
A- twiddle-lee-dee
A coat of wood polish
A-twiddle-lee-dum
An Easter red bonnet
A twiddle-lee-doo
We shall be
Like unvarnished wood
Blessed by the carpenters hands
Then, he shall smooth out the rough edges...

The Carpenters
We thought we were invincible,
Fearless, there we stood.
But somewhere to the rear
We heard someone sawing wood.
It was over the top for us,
A fight was in the offing.
But not for the carpenters,
They were busy, making coffins....

Measure twice Cut yourself
I once worked with two carpenters
who could never agree on anything.
One would measure the length
The other would intentionally cut it wrong.
The end result was
they never accomplished anything
left their “problem” to be resolved
by those who replaced them.

Forest Creatures
They've no doctors to alleviate pain
nor nutritionists to stem weight gain
No carpenters to build them a domicile
or dealers to sell them an automobile
Neither bakers to bake them a birthday cake
nor ministers to preside over their wakes...
Forest creatures, left to their own wiles
find organic ways to overcome life’s trials

The Greatest Free Gift
Wings withered with heavy held Sin
Thorns made a Crown blood dripping down
Hands and feet held with carpenters nails
Blood pouring down holding all sin within
Father giving His Son the Spirit of three
Lifting Him up High above taking him away
Leaving his words written with his blood
Listen to his words and he will appear
A Gift given to the deaf and blind open your ears and see...

An American Scene
Sepia photo
of my grandparents,
circa 1919.
Framed by a skeleton
of timbers.
He,a strapping,giant
of a man
with saw in hand.
Worn, bib overalls,
carpenters belt.
She, a comely whisper,
cradling my father.
Summer dress billowing.
No power tools then.
Each board inspected,
cut by hand, firmly nailed,
to craft the masterpiece
of a house, that would become,
my grandparents home...

Bird Whisperer - Dream Boy
*Why do birds suddenly appear every time you are near? Just like me,
they long to be close to you - from “Close to You” by the Carpenters
How soothing are your whispers; how loving is your touch.
How tender are your azure eyes, and when you smile, Dear,
my worries flee! You have to know, I love you oh so much -
my Dream Boy, for whom -when you are near – *birds suddenly appear!

shabby chic doorway
the found map led me to an
asymmetrical doorway, created by an artesian
I wondered at the builder as I approached
the boards were placed diagonally
skillset many carpenters have not mastered
I knew now I was dealing with a professional
the knocker was a bit off-kilter, which amused me.
the brickwork looked a bit random also.
who created this wall? This door?
the paint was not fresh, there were bits of ivy.
A quaint shabby chic look.
I could not wait to meet the occupant....

Hands.
a weapon. symbol. tool. nemesis.
a thing of beauty, creation, pain.
stained with ink, or blood.
delicate. broken. rough.
ivory. pink. brown. black.
hands of carpenters,
artists,
lovers,
conspirators.
feeding lust, feeding hunger.
slipped into crisp white gloves, woolen mittens, silky stockings.
betrayal.
holding bouquets of white roses,
or silver blades.
lifting cigarettes, joints, cocktails.
pulling triggers.
painting grotesque monstosity.
soothing,
delicate,
betrayal....
