Just a Thought

Thinker,
failure,
soldier,
sailor,
airman,
dead man,
grief.
Politician,
preacher,
blind man,
teacher,
banker,
usurer,
thief.

Limerick : Once an Airman who couldn’t stand his wife

Once an Airman who couldn’t stand his wife
Was going out of his mind with strife
Took to the clouds with spouse
Called her names like : »Leech ! Louse ! »
Then jumped out plane to sentence for life.

Returned Valentine

haibun

her heart's overwhelmed
as her Valentine returns
from Afghanistan

In cahoots with the local mailman, Airman Louis Patrillos hides out-of-sight as the postman returns the special valentine his wife had sent him. Then quickly Lou appears, announcing, "Honey, I'm Home!" just as she bursts into tears.

Bagram Airfield July 2010

bagram airfield july 2010

hushed ether of morning
huddled guardian warriors, arms aligned
early call to prayer sounds the blood to chill
arrives the entry check point white linen under issued desert garb
a steely eyed airman quick witted and quicker with sidearm
all hell breaks loose and all age 30 years in one hot minute

The Airman

It was his first flight,
He had desired lofty height.

He loved fighter jets,
He talked about it on his dates.

Though he failed his enrolment exams twice,
He knew life is like throwing dice.

Sky flight was his all-time favourite movie,
Unlike the bird’s movie, Covey.

He passed his simulation practices,
He preferred them to algebra matrices.

He heard so many noises in the sky,
He landed in a lost city called Fey.

To The Forgotten

Military history is written by the victors.
Generals and politicians who stamp
their names on the pages of books
written by men and women in ivory towers.

It is actually made by the common:
legionnaire, dog face, doughboy, airman,
seaman and marine. Most names unknown
to those that write the histories.

But every name a known part of a life story
to a mother, father, spouse or child who’ve
watched their loved ones go off to help
someone else make history.
