Democracy

The smart, modern boys
who’ll shepherd satellites
and parent sly AI -

live blocks away and
spend sunny afternoons with
digital zombies.

I talked with one - once,
I think, he mumbled some
strange techno-English.

He was pale and
skittish but attractive
In a shy, goth way.

“Who are you voting
for?” he stared blankly, “for prom
court??” he stared blankly.

“Madison’s nice, I
say", handing him a ballot,
*He checks her name* “Thanks!”

Ichthys July 7

From coast to coast
From land to land
The earth proclaims you
The living God.

We see you in creation
In all people of this world;
In your image we are made.

Jesus,our living God
Our saviour and our redeemer
Our loving God,our faithful friend
Comforter and King.

rophi,rophe shammah

you are always by my side,

The Host of Heaven

The wind whipped through the vale that winter night; he hunkered down, his watch to keep. A solitary star gave off its light; oblivious, the sheep lulled by their shepherd's song, lay slumbering in sleep. They suddenly were no longer alone; an angel of the Lord appeared and all about, His wondrous glory shone. The shepherd, much afeared, shook, naked and exposed; the sight, his senses sheared. But grace on grace, the angel said, "Behold, I bring you tidings of great joy!" And thus, just as the scriptures had foretold, Immanuel, a boy, announced, not to the rich, but to the hoi polloi. And as he spoke, 'twas like a switch was thrown, the veil drawn back, a mere facade; surrounding him, a multitude had grown. A sight that overawed: the host of heaven singing, glorifying God. ————— for the A Christmas Special Poetry Contest sponsored by Emile Pinet written on 12/3/22

Ode To David

an English Ode

A shepherd-boy composer sang of hope -
pastoral psalms were first heard by his lambs,
his soothing music helped King Saul to cope,
distressing psalms related rival's scams.
Young David, you respected God as Lord
and recognized that giving thanks is praise.
Recalling God's own mighty triumphs past,
you wrote of vict'ry, friendships with accord;
you shaped forgiveness, faith, your Father's ways.
As king, you wrote of blessings deep and vast.

Oft-quoted, sung and prayed by millions wide
Psalm 23, perhaps the best-known psalm.
And "Bless the Lord, my soul," we've gladly cried,
Psalm 1-0-3 are verses penned to calm.
We lift up praise, "majestic is Thy name,"
to God from both Psalm 8 and 21.
"Create in me a clean heart, Thou my God,"
writes David when confronted with true shame;
Psalm 51 recounts how cleansing's done.
King David's psalms, sweet music to applaud.

Taking other's estimation of you, David, as enough justification to write of the biblical King David in your honor. I know you will miss your friendships here. May God bless your future plans as only He can.

The Virgin Maid of Orleans, Translation of Paul Verlaine's La Pucelle

The Virgin Maid of Orleans, Translation of Paul Verlaine’s La Pucelle
					To Robert Caze*

Even as the blaze crackled around the stake’s pyre,
Joan was deafened by the clergy’s brutal chanting,
Harsh eyes with hate from all the windows demeaning,
She felt her flesh quiver and her soul budge on fire.

And like lambs that resold to the butcher expire
The shepherd roamed with country airs whistling
She reflected in earnest on things and being
And met her lord who ungrateful did conspire.

« It’s wrong, gentle Bastard, sweet Charles*, good Xaintrailles,
To let the English take charge of her funeral
She who forced them to abandon the siege of Orleans. »

And as for Lorraine, the very thought of that injury,
While death clasped in its arms the non-believers,
Weary ! She cried out just as another creature formerly.

At Caedmon's Grave

At Cædmon’s Grave
At Caedmon's Grave
by Michael R. Burch

“Cædmon’s Hymn,” composed at the Monastery of Whitby (a North Yorkshire fishing village), is one of the oldest known poems written in the English language, dating back to around 680 A.D. According to legend, Caedmon, an illiterate Anglo-Saxon cowherd, received the gift of poetic composition from an angel; he subsequently founded a school of Christian poets. Unfortunately, only nine lines of Caedmon’s verse survive, in the writings of the Venerable Bede. Whitby, tiny as it is, reappears later in the history of English literature, having been visited, in diametric contrast, by Lewis Carroll and Bram Stoker’s ghoulish yet evocative Dracula.

At the monastery of Whitby,
on a day when the sun sank through the sea,
and the gulls shrieked wildly, jubilant, free,

while the wind and time blew all around,
I paced those dusk-enamored grounds
and thought I heard the steps resound

of Carroll, Stoker and good Bede
who walked there, too, their spirits freed
—perhaps by God, perhaps by need—

to write, and with each line, remember
the glorious light of Cædmon’s ember,
scorched tongues of flame words still engender.

Here, as darkness falls, at last we meet.
I lay this pale garland of words at his feet.

Such ties my Saviour through cord of sweet friendship Nurtured by Christ upon Scriptural faith’s authorship While I learn from His blessed mentorship Propelling joyous faithful stewardship Along functional fruitful discipleship… God be praised for Psalm 23’s divine craftsmanship inspiring my soul toward sublime worship nourished to reach-out by sovereign guardianship triumphing over trials upon truth’s headship… grateful am I to the Lord* for His shepherding workmanship.
*Psalm 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. Inspired by “Mizmor Kaf Gimmel” (Psalm 23), the Psalm of David Originally written in Hebrew Translated to English by the King James Version (KJV) Bible translators in 1611 November 21, 2021 1st place, "Inspired By A Translation" Poetry Writing Contest Sponsored by Malabika Ray Choudhury; judged on 12/12/2021. The following is the Hebrew text of Psalm 23 Mizmor Kaf Gimmel (Psalm 23) in English Psalm of David, Psalm 23 1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Shaggy Dog Limericks Iii

The Doberman Pinscher

A Doberman’s known to be picky
With friends so to greet one is tricky
To kiss is a bummer
Undoubtedly dumber
Is to sneak up and give one a hickey

The English Setter

The reason we call them a setter
Is they follow their genes to the letter
When spotting their prey
They will sit down and lay
Till it’s time to get up and go get ‘er

The German Shepherd

For a breed with a dubious rep
How ironic when choosing to prep
A dog steady and wise
To be some human’s eyes
At the top of the list is the Shep

The German Shorthaired Pointer

Pointing…it sounds like a breeze
Just stick out your tail and freeze
The hard work is done
Now wait for the gun
Taking care not to wiggle or sneeze

The Golden Retriever I

Consider the Golden Retriever
Part camel, part Wookie, part beaver
You can leave her alone
In your home with a bone
If you first take the time to relieve ‘er

The Golden Retriever II

Its coat is luxurious gold
Like the crown on a monarch of old
Thick but not kinky
Though occasionally stinky
What a glorious sight to behold!

The Greyhound

Though Greyhounds are known for their speed
There’s a dignified side to the breed
For when given a choice
Between rabbits and Joyce
They are likely to choose a good read

The Irish Setter

He’s Irish not Scottish or British
You forget, he’ll get ornery and skittish
He’ll point to his pelt
Start swearing in Celt
With a splash of some Gaelic and Yiddish

The Jack Russell Terrier

A packet of fizz the Jack Russell
Full of dashing and daring and bustle
With engine on race
And the world left to chase
Any wonder he makes such a fussle?

The Keeshond

I once knew a hound that was Dutch
Can’t say that I cared for him much
He lived on a barge
That was smelly and large
And grinned at the hint of a touch

The Kerry Blue Terrier

You ask, why include a new terrier
Not a hound or a pinscher or harrier?
Include them indeed
Not a different breed
‘cause they’re fun as a bun and lots hairier

Coming of the Magi

Coming of the Magi
Matthew 2.1-12

Verse 1: “After Jesus was born in Bethlehem...Judea,
During the reign of King Herod, magi came [Yeshua],
From the east to Jerusalem. 2 They asked: [aroma],
‘Where is the newborn king of the Jews? [paranoia].

We’ve seen his star in the east, and we’ve [hernia],
Come to honor him.’ 3 When King Herod [gonna],
Heard this, he was troubled, and everyone [won’t ya],
In Jerusalem was troubled with him [trauma (Athena)].

4 He gathered all the chief priests and the legal [torah],
Experts and asked them where the Christ was [Amonia],
To be born [stroma]. 5 They said ‘In Bethlehem [krona],
Of Judea, for this is what the prophet wrote, [Adonia]:

6 “You, Bethlehem, land of Judah, by no means, [aqua],
Are you the least among the rulers of Judah [enterica],
Because from you will come one who governs [insignia],
Who will shepherd my people Israel [loud n’ proud aura]”.

7 Then Herod secretly called for the magi and [drama],
Found out from them the time when the star [corona],
Had first appeared [prima]. 8 He sent them [begonia],
To Bethlehem, saying, “Go [n’] search carefully [beg ya]:

For the child. When you’ve found him, report [nihil mora],
To me so that I too may go and honor him.” Paronama].
9 When they heard the king, they went; and, [proxima],
Look, the star they had seen in the east went [comptonia] -

Ahead of them until it stood over the place [concordia],
Where the child was. 10 When they saw the star [folia],
They were filled with joy. 11 They entered the house [coxa],
And saw the child with Mary his mother [Collutorium gutta].

Falling to their knees, they honored him [phenomena].
Then they opened their treasure chests and [poma],
Presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense [aroma],
And myrr. Because they were warned in a dream, [gala] -

Not to return to Herod [inca], they went back to [ok plasma],
Their own country by another route [elegantia (got ya!}].
I believe this is Matt 2.1-12, and know that you will lambda,
Because this trauma dealt with by the magi, was brahma.

The Dream

There was something in that dream
                           The puzzle pieces surely seemed
To be initials, only of your name
The sloping roof, the simple truth
                         Remembered dreams of recent youth
                          Shorn now of youthful strength
                                 Life was surely not a
                                        joyful game

                                  With a broken 3/4 door
                         The voices mocked and underscored
The little hope, that we once surely had
                          The prowling feet hastened retreat
The flash flood rising in the street
                            Near washing us of everything
                                         once glad

                           Awaking with a gasping start
A horrid ice clutching my heart
I rose and left the cold nightmare behind
                      Praying "Jesus, please release us!"
                        From this poverty which seizes
                         Then trusting in His mercies
                                     true and kind

                           He heard our anguished prayer
Our Lord and Savior met us there
He always works our puzzled pieces out
                         Mercy extended, wilderness ended
                           Our loving Shepherd tended.
                          Leading us to greener pasture
                                     Without doubt

Memoirs

Although born in Scotland I have no memories of there as we left when I was two.
My first recollections are of Las Palmos in the Canaries.
I recall the donkey passing daily and being told he bites.
I was given a caterpillar and tended it, oh so carefully.
My mother when it was a cocoon persauded me to put it outside.

Well you can imagine my intense disappointment to find
that it had hatched and flown without me getting a single glimpse!!
This is the first disappoint in life that I faced. Our house had a flat roof
with a lovely garden on top and in the distance an enormous tall chimney.

I remember our boxer Susie she was real crazy especially on the beach
and while breaking open sugur cane it slipped and cut me wide open
right between the right thumb and first finger. I was taken to the doctor
who would you believe? poured iodine into it, he wanted to stitch it too, but no way
was I letting that sadist anywhere near me again. I still bear the scar today.

I recall seeing a woman dressed in black perched atop of a towering cliff
when we were out in the car my sister saw her too. We had to turn back due to
landslides and she was gone, she also had a pointy hat did we see a witch?
I had a wonderful dolls house into which I could walk, yet I took all my dolls
apart to see how they worked I was such an inquisitive child.

At five we returned to England living very near Hampstead Heath and Parliament
Hill fields. One day when my mother walked me to school I entered to find not
a single soul present so I walked up to my Aunts as she lived very close.
Needless to say I got into a real heap of trouble from both school and mum.

I recollect an outing to Hampstead Heath there was a cafe surrounded by a
large hedge from which I could never find the way out. I ran ahead and
entered through the hedge only to find my parents nowhere to be seen.
Of course I could not find the way out back to the car. This couple found
me and insisted on taking me to the police station four miles away I kept
trying to tell them I only lived two streets down from the Heath, Grown ups!!!

I remember always wanting to speak Spanish and people refusing to answer me
telling me I had to speak in English Bah! I used to ride my tricycle up and
down five stairs mum always telling me I would fall. Well one day my sister
called me and I tumbled down breaking my right wrist I used to stuff vegetables
up inside the plaster to avoid eating them. I hate most vegetables to this very day.

When I was seven we got Kim our German shepherd who we took to Africa with us.
I recollect the excitement of visiting Gibraltar and seeing the monkeys,
the mystery of sailing through the Suez canal the banks so close as to seem
touchable. A giant ray getting caught on the ships bows oh boy did it stink.

It stayed with us from the equator to Zanibar yuck! I looked on all goggle
eyes at the first dark people I had ever seen cowering by my mum as they banished
machetes in the air some with only one eye. I was trembling in my shoes.
Kim took a dislike to them as they teased her by poking her with sticks through
her cage. This dislike stayed with her for life. We arrived in Dar-es-Salaam
on my eight birthday. From here another tale begins, later to be told.
