Our playgrounds have faded
swings stilled, sandboxes unfilled
Where are the shovels and pails ~
replaced by profits and sales

Kids know that creation is play;
understand that imagination
requires endless reconstruction.
Grown-ups rely on
buckets of hope and pinches of salt,
forget how to play.
Broken toys
in long abandoned sandboxes
dream-on.

We drank tang because the astronauts did...
Our plastic spacemen sashayed in sandboxes
we made lunar capsules out of tinfoil
on Halloween spacemen mingled
with mad clowns jack o lanterns and ghosts.
Santa said ho ho ho from under paper mâché moon glow.
Anything was possible...
there were starry miracles
beyond our four-block world
because the astronauts told us so.
Apollo 1...when the fiery mare first appeared.
Kicked a blazing horseshoe into our satin minds.
Anything WAS possible...both ugly and divine...
We still drank tang but childhood was incinerated.

Secrets hide in playgrounds
Tall shadows for concealing
Sandboxes glow all around
Gloom feeds off feelings
Bad dreams pose as fakes
Old lies parade and glare
Shame glosses most mistakes
Loneliness mixes with despair
Secrets hide in playgrounds
Empty words drop and roll
Silence screams clear and loud
Sins and gin drink up lost souls
Hearts burn on dirty grills
Hope teeters on edge of display
Promises tunnel into hills
Tomorrow slides in another day
Secrets hide in playgrounds
Waiting patiently to be found

When I close my eyes and go to sleep....
I dream in places that take me deep....
Just where we can run and play....
A park in my mind where the two of us can stay...
There is swings and sandboxes all built around...
Shovels and buckets and a new slide we have found...
A flowing stream that's runs blue and clear...
Where we can swim and have no fear....
The sun stays out into the night...
Nothing to cloud this vision or blind my sight....
Still I wake with a smile only to remember those
days as a child...

Sandboxes and shovels once made us complete
Everyone used to be so sweet
We played and laughed until the sun went down
All fifth birthdays had a clown
No one ever dared to cheat
Nothing was ever nice and neat
We slept at night with only good dreams
Every time we fought there were always screams
I wish we could go back to the past
Since then life has moved too fast
We are leaving it all behind
We hope what we're searching for we'll eventually find
