I saw Thriplow in its merriment
Vintage cars borrowed from Cambridge
and an abundance of folk singers
with strobes of defiant daffodils
food for the feasties
Morris Dancers sermonising past practice
and mud galore for the land lugger
wannabe grandad Rockabilly singers
and Betty Boothroyds cottage on display
St Johns Ambulance eagerly waiting patrons
Dray horses carrying wagons
This was an experience to enjoy

In the rural green field far away from city cacophony
the lure of sonic extravaganza rose from the virgin soil,
reaching far and wide across the urban pop culture
with the tantalizing tunes of grass root country music.
In the early years of the high-octane rock and roll,
a mighty musical revolution that burst out of nowhere,
shaked the one-time edifice of melodic perceptions,
while generational upheaval veered onto an obsession.
Words floated fast in the quiet neighborhood air,
a band of the third generation country musicians
would captivate the wilderness with rockabilly songs,
an upcoming experiment on the art of musical fusion.
On the grass laden pristine pasture off the highway
assembled the music enthusiasts, young and old.
“You rocked me” resonated in the tune of verdant land,
for some in lyric of dream, for some in rhythm of memory.

I once knew a boy named Billy
I thought he was originally from Chile
Mostly ‘cause he loved his hot sauce and chili
Toting everywhere his jar of piccalilli
It turns out Billy was really the local hillbilly
I should have known, that was really silly
‘Cause Billy craved to barbecue anything chilly
On his boombox would play loudly rockabilly
Going around back roads willy-nilly
And Billy liked nothing girly or frilly
Till that is his eyes fell on fancy Miss Millie
With her exotic palate straight from Piccadilly
At first Billy would get nothing but stares that were grilly
Till he offered Miss Millie a fine thoroughbred filly
She let out a cry that was remarkably shrilly
All she secretly desired was a bouquet of tiger lily
When Billy misunderstood and brought her back a water lily
Seeing through Billy’s shell Miss Millie paused standing stilly
‘Cause Miss Millie was way deep down a wannabe tilly

She tore me apart
under a rockabilly sunset;
Set me free from the
sway of pop culture jive
with her bass-line booty.
She smelled like gasoline,
tasted like cherries,
and made my heart rumble like a .454
And she knew she had me,
when she dropped her hair
outta that black bandanna,
wrapped it it round my neck,
and lit me up with
…Pontiac red lips.
Yeah, she tore me down
like a fixer-upper,
built me back up,
and revved me high.
Reeedd liinedd by those
spider web leggins’.
I know she’s mine,
thank God in Heaven.
Cuz when she whispers in my
ear “Baby, lets go for a ride”
I can’t find a way to make
this monster glide.
We’re stuck in high gear,
bound to make it outta town
for’ daddy knows I got her
sittin’ in the middle of my bench
seat ‘stead of that church pew.
I know he’ll come a lookin’
but as long as we keep bookin’
we’ll make it to horizon ‘for the
world even knows we’re gone.

Virginia produced a rockabilly pioneer named Janis.
This talented artist was called the “Female Elvis”.
In her youth, she displayed fine musical prowess.
What a flamboyant act she displayed on stage
when rockabilly music was the fifties’ rage!
With her initial hit record “Will You Willyum”,
Janis achieved popularity, and then some.
She drew a plethora of applauses and cheers
whenever personal appearances were made over the years.
The spirit of Janis is now performing in heaven
after she passed away in 2007.

I always wanted a genre
that united punk, hiphop, jazz, rockabilly, country
that united us
I want joni mitchell meets johnny cash meets the clash
I want a united front of love and culture
I want to see the genres meet
as I want to see the peoples meet
Im talking about the art that meets, unites,
and transcends.

From the state of Oklahoma, you came to be.
Many proclaimed you rock and roll’s first lady.
Discovered by Hank Thompson in Oklahoma City,
you became so popular, even dating Elvis Presley.
Influenced by Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Buddy Holly,
your biggest hit song came in 1960.
Top of the charts came with “Let’s Have a Party”.
“Fujiyama Mama” made you famous internationally.
From being a pioneer in rockabilly,
your music success continued with country.
Flamboyant performances earned you popularity.
Many of your fans still flock to see you today.
Judging from your success, it is easy to say,
you have been number one, and there may you stay.

My taste in music is not a single
But rather many that intermingle
A favorite tune can make me tingle
For I love to hear a familiar jingle
Romantic ballads cause me to swoon
Play an Irish tune, I'll dance like a loon
A bluegrass song ends way too soon
I could listen to Big Band and swing til noon
A Classical arrangement is, well, classy
The Spanish guitar sounds so snappy
And Rockabilly can be downright snazzy
Those jazz numbers are, you guessed it, jazzy
Just don't ask me too quick
For my favorite music to pick
Of one style, the other can't lick
So to a variety of tastes I will stick
