What sleeps while I wake?
What do my dreams do
when I'm awake?
Do they fall asleep
and rise again as I grow tired?
Or are they alive all day,
living a second life
beneath the skin of mine
and I just miss
the daylight hours
of the dream?
Are they alive?
Do they come to me
in glimmering bursts
just as my eyes
begin to close?
Are the dreams my real life
And daytime my dreams?
Or are they
(as people say)
nothing more than
distorted fragments
of our thinking
I refuse
to not know.
What do dreams do
