Fit In
the crowd you hang with
is ‘sophisticated’
everyone sporting
new duds
new cars
new women in bars
my make-do threads
barely seem decent
you said I had to change
as I don’t fit in
your friends toasting
the roasting
of competitors
I bore you with
my interests
my needs
my walks in parks
paths for self-doubt
you said I had to change
as I don’t fit in
you said I had to change
my thoughts
my ways
if I wanted to win
in the relationship
to impress, dazzle
people I didn’t know
or wanted to know
you said I had to change
'cause I don’t belong
yes, I have changed
a new dawn
a new dream
I no longer need you
to validate me
I now fit in
with myself
you said
I had to change
be as it may
I hate to burst
your lone
fragile bubble
but now
YOU don’t fit in
as I have changed
