Inspired by: ‘Chasing Pavements’ (2007), by Adele—I saw her perform at the Town Hall, Southampton in December 2007.
the crowd you hang with
is ‘sophisticated’
everyone sporting
new duds
new cars
new women in bars
my make-do threads
barely seem decent
you said I had to change
as I don’t fit in
your friends toasting
the roasting
of competitors
I bore you with
my interests
my needs
my walks in parks
paths for self-doubt
you said I had to change
as I don’t fit in
you said I had to change
my thoughts
my ways
if I wanted to win
in the relationship
to impress, dazzle
people I didn’t know
or wanted to know
you said I had to change
'cause I don’t belong
yes, I have changed
a new dawn
a new dream
I no longer need you
to validate me
I now fit in
with myself
you said
I had to change
be as it may
I hate to burst
your lone
fragile bubble
but now
YOU don’t fit in
as I have changed
