Innocence of Eloise
How elfin her beauty, sweet innocence on the face
of my grandchild who always runs into my embrace.
For a week while I visited, at the first rays of morn,
she tumbled into my bed as if a dandelion, airborne.
"Nana," she would softly whisper, "Are you awake?"
As if I wouldn't be by then, "Wanna play pattycake?"
"Yes, ma petite, but first I must have a great big hug."
She squeezed tight, this sprite I called my 'Ladybug.'
The time we spend together, much too quickly ends.
I fell in love with this child, who comes with dividends.
She made scones for me, served on tiny China plates.
Surely, you can see why I never refuse her playdates.
When she smiles at me and puts her hand in mine...
my maternal emotions take hold, by God's design.
I take pictures as Eloise reminds me to say, "Cheese."
Then she has to take one of me. "Can I, Nana. Please?"
I can't deny this fae child, even a star from the skies
And if you need a reason why, just look into her eyes
That puppy dog expression evinces innocence to me
To be a child of three again, when life was so carefree.
