A Little Painted Cedar Chest
I can still remember an old beau,
A girlfriend wanted me to meet,
He was much older than I,
But played the piano oh so sweet.
He owned a peanut farm
A little to the west of my town,
Money was not a problem for him,
He just liked to drive around.
One night he said we'd do something new,
He took me to his town's central square;
He said his peanut crop was in,
And he had some money to spare.
We went into a jolly hamburger place,
I went along, he was so funny, and
Then he gave me a little cedar chest with a lock,
Prettily painted, filled with chocolates "for his honey."
I still have that flowered little cedar chest;
It stays on my old antique vanity,
Holding many little treasures,
And his special memory.
