I timed my departure to coincide with the
lunar eclipse, but the
eastern horizon wasn't apparent,
in the park, or at the top of the road
my local high points
I scanned the firmament along with
other rando hopefuls but there was
no show to see so
onwards and upwards we went
as wine of a deep red hue
wasn't going to
buy or drink itself

Random Journey (written 2016)
Is the inception of a voyage the end of an abstract nothingness
and beginnings of conscious life, like driving to town and buying the papers
I remember a song: “Set Sail at the Sunset”, I can hum the rest, but have
forgotten the words I see in front of me with my eyes closed
A red sun and calm sea, this is not the crossing of Styx after sundown or
is my immaturity making fun of me again
you can`t sail to Afghanistan?
I could sail there on a balloon and land when the Taliban shoot a hole in this; we can drink coffee, smoke American cigarettes, and laugh.
The problem is you can`t look at women in Afghanistan
as a shooting
offense to read the Guardian newspaper in Afghanistan.
So I will sit here and wait not to cross the river but to sail the oceans.

Anna and I were sitting on an outdoor bench. To get some fresh air, our classes are virtual this week and we were feeling claustrophobic. I was working on a poem idea on my iPad and Anna was uploading an assignment from her laptop.
The bench is by a walkway and there were a few people passing by. I asked Anna, “What’s an alternative word for paralysis?” And three rando students walking by answer my question, in less time than Anna can even look up from her Mac.
“Tetraplegia,” says a girl on the far side of the walk - who passed us right to left - her friends laughed at her for answering my question. “Palsy,” says a guy who was passing the other way, on our side - he didn’t even look up from his phone. And last, a guy behind the girls says, “standstill.”
I just look up and smile - I love this place. Everyone’s friendly and collaborative. There’s an almost homogeneous curiosity about the world.
“Maybe I should create a sidewalk, crossword-puzzling channel on Twitch?” I ask Anna, who just shook her head, “No.”
