Posse Poems

Before John Ford

It seems that the truth is never quite square
it’s just a bit catywampus you see
All about the way that the cowboys lived
back in them old westerns on our TV

Them outlaws and sheriffs had old six guns
that could shoot forty-nine times on a load
Look real close and see them telephone poles
running alongside an asphalt paved road

Good guys always wore white and bad guys black
with their pearly teeth that sparkled like snow
It just took a minute to saddle up
and get anywhere they wanted to go

They could quick draw and fire their six shooters
And hit a nickel tossed into the air
But they just could never hit the outlaw
till he got to where he’d fall down the stairs

When being chased by a few Indians
they’d throw bullets out the end of their gun
If they did run out of ammunition
that’s when they’d just throw their pistol and run

A hero could get shot right in the chest
but never a drop of red would you see
The next day he’d be out riding his horse
while chasing the outlaws with his posse

At the end of it all the good guy wins
he would get the horse, the dog and the girl
He would live happily ever after
in his black and white TV western world

Premium MemberPosse On a Mission

desperados have the sheriff’s address
they are threatening the life of his family
he rides his mount nearly to death
ready to face the outlaws with guns blazing

a posse joins him, determined to be of help
hoping they will get there in time
wanting to save his wife and children
a posse on a mission

Premium MemberThe Posse of Soup Creek

My youth is long gone, I’m now middle aged.
I live life by my rules and my soul is not caged.

I’m a member of the Soup, this is where I spill my ink.
I’ve no delusions of grandeur, it can be gone in a blink.

I’m part of an elite group, sometimes mild but never meek.
All are welcome to apply, just see the mayor at Soup Creek.

We won’t back down from a fight, so be careful of what you say.
We are always keeping watch, every second of every day.

With the shirts from our backs, we’ll help any friend.
Just don’t cross my posse, their loyalty has no end.

Some say we’re the bullies, don’t believe what you hear.
We will defend what is right, let’s just make that point clear.

This site is like the wild west, we have many tales to tell.
The coffee is always on, so pull up a chair and sit a spell.

Premium MemberThe Posse Came A-Howling

The posse came a-howling for vengeance
The Senator must now perform penance
   His pleas for mercy ignored
   His reputation was gored
Beheaded by public opinion's sword

Premium MemberMy Posse of Women

We are a rare lot, women with burgundy hair, a tad bit over fifty-nine.
But then I meet up with my friends, and I see that two of them are a lot like me.
One’s hair is magenta, another one is turquoise, like-minded women, my kind.
We walk into a restaurant, and old men give us a wide berth, my comrades and me.
We are wearing our butterflies, and exotic shawls, parading differences fine.
We are glad to see each other, and laugh as loudly as any hens you will see.
We do not talk religion or politics, because that is where we have to draw the line,
So we can remain friends, oblivious to more serious stuff, free to merely be
Our happy go-lucky friends for all eternity selves, to laugh and joke and whine.
