Premium MemberI Missed the Shortest Day, Longest Night

Each day is assigned in a calendar spot,
with a quote for 'on this day,'
or perhaps it's your birthday
or someone else's.
'Here's Cheers', 'Anyway!'.
But I do digress,
here we are at the winter solstice,
the shortest day, and
and longest night
of the year, so far.
It was 2 days ago, but you get the idea.
Certainly it's memorable,
if anyone cared to notice.
Things get better or worse from here on,
depending on which owl you back,
or which aisle or lane you are in or on.
As I look out, the shadows still seem blurred,
as the windows smudge my view.
The people I knew, seem like strangers
in the half-dark, half-light of
no-man's land picketed by day-length.
It's the solstice stranger phenomenon,
someone said was coming, that I
and most of my friends missed.
Perhaps we'll catch each other,
and it, better next year.
Let's say at dawn or dusk, perhaps both,
a year's hence,
'cause I don't know which
would be the more memorable.
If I remember, I'll mark them in my calendar!
Bye and Cheers!

Smoke Deck

Left to right,
An arrow of longevity,
One long horn
Echoing in the darkness,
A signal
For the wary seafarer.

Left to right,
On the edge of an invisible plane,
Forbidden fruit
Lay beyond the reach of the crippled.
What is there
Beyond a picketed horizon?

Left to right,
From three bird’s eyes,
Triangulation,
Becomes intended movement.
A broken table
No longer bears two dimensions.

Monsoon Evening

The evening descends amid sudden steam,

that threatens to trample the dingy sheds.

The clock tower bells four o’clock,

and the acquiesce of the frogs.

Over the white-picketed fence,

raincoat hands’ gathering commence.

Home Sweat Home

A triangle top
A square foundation
A picketed white fence guarded
by
two spotted dalmatians sitting on the
shaggiest rug that reads
"Home Sweat Home"

Premium MemberA Dog

The darkness fades as the new day comes and he sips coffee

He thinks of his marriage that had faded with the night

He relinquished the vows and his wife's plea and poured them into the glass

The world turned as the dog came and said good morning and came to rest at his feet

The Sun rose into the quiet and he silently gazed out the window

It was silent as were the vows

The birds had formed a Union with the squirrels and picketed the Sun

And the warmth on his foot from the dog made the silence fresh

The prayers were sent to where they go and the waiting

The refrigerator hummed and rattled and kept in tune with the computer

The words waited with those prayers and the dog stirred

And God looked down on the pair with love

Those prayers gathered to God and He considered each

And one prayer was showered down on the man and his dog

Love was granted to the two and with certainty God relayed

The dog got to her feet and took a slow draw of water

And He went back to the vows and released them with finality

He gave the dog a rub and went to his coffee
