The platypus excels at evolution
And displays a super cool solution
For making his way amidst the muck,
He don't run aground. He don't get stuck.
Of this, the platypus would never dream
As a self-respecting monotreme.
Indeed, a platypus of station
Will employ electrolocation.

The elusive, furry platypus,
Is a surviving monotreme,
Living above and below the water,
Of any Aussie stream,
Where it lives a pure autonomous life,
With a bric a brac design,
Made up from bits of others,
A sort of animal Frankenstein,
With its duck bill mouth and otter foot,
And beaver sort of tail,
And then it’s got its venomous poison,
In a curly black toenail,
And, as a mammal, what’s really odd,
It lays eggs like a chook…
These are reasons I love spotting platypus,
When they’re swimming in a brook.

My dear Ornithorhynchus,
Why do you confuse us?
Neither mammal nor bird
You are a creature absurd.
You are a mammal they say
Yet yellow yolked eggs you lay
And suckle your young
To scale evolution's rung.
Your pelt is so fine
But you root like the swine
In the mud for your fill
With your famous duck-bill!
Your cousins are echidnas
But you've webs on your claws
Of the Order Monotreme
You are an exceptional extreme.
Oh, dear Platypus
You are really thus
A freak of Biology
Of really rare ontology!

Lying on the hilltop
like moments in a dream,
the beauty so extreme,
when the blowing winds stop
I look through the treetop
and spy a monotreme.
Platypuses pass by
as wombats waddle through,
followed by kangaroo.
Emus could never fly
but they will always try
or wind up in a stew.
Strutting mist, slow and proud
animal shapes in clouds.
