Marcel Duchamp
(French Dada artist, 1887 - 1968)

Marcel Duchamp is most celebrated
for a woman rushing down a stairwell naked,
a painting critics mocked from the start
as degenerate French modern art.

Wives sighed relief she’s less than revealing
so invited their husbands for a viewing.
Duchamp painted her stripped of any garb
apropos to the art of the time – avant garde –

a style abstracted from reality
and untouched by prurient vulgarity
devoid of any libidinous knowledge,
unless her many overlapping legs.

I suspect her lover’s knock she heard
had her rushing hurriedly and blurred.
Who he might have been is still unknown –
some think Duchamp, discreetly not shown.

How to take a leak

Marcel felt quite an urge when he set out to purge understanding of how to when
we view misconceptions of who is taking the piss now never thereafter and then

A fountain trickling urinal porcelain pissoir on display impressed me no doubt in
treacherous confusion of images since relief in museums constitutes phallic sin

When streams of revisionist consciousness meet with surreal ‘truth’ of ablutions
seeming paradoxes cleanse body and mind in contextual and continent solutions

A fragmented human condition does not improve with rigid caged in perceptions
in which mindless dogma clearly resists benefits of antiauthoritarian disinfection

Are glass ceilings real are vessels of thought and flush toilets congested or empty
do ivory towers reveal liberation and freedom achieve status of fully cognoscenti

Nothing what it seems is Duchamp's message in a showcase of lavatorial pride
colonising minds need disclosure critique confrontation urinating against the tide

When cognition feeling and action with knowledge have reached full critical vision
I reach for a fountain pen so whether this is a poem or not remains your decision

Premium MemberNude Descending a Staircase

The canvas is painted in ochres and browns
Suggesting a figure, the staircase coming down
Be it masculine or feminine is for your mind to see
The artist’s title denotes it descends in nudity.

The body parts are not displayed so exact
Demonstrating movements that appear somewhat abstract
Stare as long as you like at the naked body parts
It now hangs in Philadelphia at the Museum of Art.

The name of this Modernist display is recognized by many
Although knowing what it looks like – you may not find any
“Nude Descending a Staircase, no 2” is a title known well
Painted by Marcel Duchamp in nineteen and twelve.

Although some will be disappointed when they finally take a look
This painting is a masterpiece in my artistic book.

Indalomena Mnemosyna

'The silence of Marcel Duchamp is overrated'
All that chess-
Recall for a moment
That idle chit-chat,
That verbal bric-a-brac,
such flamboyant suppositional consciousness,
Let it noodle around the edges-
Blow this metaphor off.
Ratings challenge lies.
The deep magenta shadows,
The haze of grass smoke
'My face is my own, I thought'.
We need to remember,
Weaving around caftans
with a duodecimal swivel-
I think of Ben Johnson
And 'Shards of God',
Who is Hanibal?
Collapsing the elements,
My question is a part of the point of these lines,
A faked head,
Gaslight,
A form of women,
I can do nothing.
Other discourses speak on it's behalf,
There is a cost to the silent critique,
'The silence of Marcel Duchamp is overrated'.
