Outside the walls stood a handmaiden gazing
Twisting her skirt between fingers so frail
Patches of burlap were sewn on the garment
Cut from a sack of a barley oat bale
Oh how she dreamed of the opulent palace
Silver and gold and the finest of lace
Gowns made of velvet with ribbons of satin
She spun around with a smile on her face
As if a princess, her blonde hair a flowing
Blue skies above now the tint of her eyes
Hearing a song on the early spring breezes
Never once noticed the coming surprise
Then saw him on horseback and blushed like a petal
Found on the reddest of roses that grew
Knee bent to curtsey, feeling embarrassed
Knowing this gesture is what she should do
“Good day my fair maiden, your dance was enchanting”
He said as he smiled, his kindness was felt
“So sorry my prince, I did not see you coming”
Again on the soil before him she knelt
“Rise up,” he said as he slid from the saddle
“There is no need for such formality,
for one of such beauty tis I who should bow”
Saying this he touched the earth with one knee
Once more she blushed like an apricot sunrise
Standing he reached out and taking her hand
Wondered, “What brings you by here on this morning,
adding such loveliness to our fine land?”
“Your majesty, I’m but a servant daydreaming,
Seeing myself quite the belle of the ball
Very much childish I know you are thinking
For I belong far outside this great wall”
He pondered a moment, his chin now he fondled
Suddenly grinned with the happiest glance
“Well now fair maiden, if thou would permit me
Please be my guest at this evening’s spring dance?”
“Oh handsome prince I could not even think it
Look at my dress, I have nothing to wear
Merely these rags and an old pair of high tops
Never to mention the state of my hair”
“Never you mind and I kind of like high tops
Maybe some jeans and a tank top in red
Pull your hair back and it will be perfect
Nothing you’ll need when we climb into bed”
“What’s that you say, you want sex after dancing
Beat it you creep, I’m abreast of your game
I’ll spread these legs not for anyone fancy
Damn it, you men, every one is the same”
As he departed, rejected and sneering
She stomped away feeling angry and mean
So here you find such an unhappy ending
The truth is she only had eyes for the queen
His grandma was there when he was born…
or so his family told him.
After all the family had their turn, the story goes,
she was the last to hold him.
They tell him how his grandma held him in her arms…
how she gently rocked him side to side…
they tell him how she smiled…they tell him how she cried.
His grandma was there to teach him about life…how to love…and how to give.
His grandma believed a world of peace, love, and acceptance is where we we’re meant to live.
Even as they both grew older and spent more time apart…
his grandma’s arms and eyes and ears were always open to him…she called them the gateway to her heart.
He was there when his grandma died…
after his mom and dad…he was the last to hold her.
“I love you Grandma. I’m going to miss you.” were the last words he ever told her.
As he held her in his arms and gently rocked her side to side…
his family will remember how he smiled…how he cried.
For, as he held her that last time…
the same way she held him at his birth…
he wondered what life would be like if Grandmas ruled the Earth.
Through their eyes perhaps we’d see everyone as our sister and our brother…
Through their ears perhaps we’d begin to listen a little more to one another.
Through their open arms perhaps we’d find a world of peace…
without a need for war…or guns…
where children are not left without parents…and parents without daughter and sons.
Of course he can’t be sure what life would be like if, from the moment of our birth, the politics were different…
and grandmas ruled the Earth.
But what made him cry and smile that day
as he said his last good-bye
was holding her and thinking to himself…
perhaps it’s time we try.
GOOD QUILL HUNTING

Deep into the caverns of my mind
I sauntered,
To perhaps discover treasures, I
wondered.
Something divinely sparkling and
shimmeringly sweet.
For other souls to cherish and to
soulfully keep!
In these caverns, it's dark and so
mystically still!
I anticipate a bright new poem just
waiting for me on a gleaning, turquoise hill.
Poetry so much like the grandest of ballets.
A new poem, to pen then, without undue delay!
Absorbed in Guernica’s promise Lucifer glanced at Montmatre
Settled his mind on virgins in heaven as Mona Lisa smiled on
One Last Supper tied to a suicide belt he set out to light the church
Of Our Lady and mounted Chagall’s Blue Horse towards The Scream
It was a Starry Night and he wondered how they painted in paradise
Oozing of promise he bandaged his lughole as a quiet reminder that
He had once been tied in desperate love to a Girl with a Pearl Ear Ring
Saw clearly the arc in his tearful eye which was one of glorious triumph
While he remembered Klimt’s Kiss The Birth of Venus fled the scene
On his way from the Louvre to book stalls at the banks of the Seine
He wondered whether a volume of so called degenerate art might be
A fitting companion on his irreversible passage to Death and the Maiden
Noble at heart in his mind he planted dynamite at the foot of Tour Eiffel
Well aware that triangulation was the strongest form of resilient bonds
By coincidence or synchronicity a Blue Dove flew onto his shoulder and
Reminded him of Goya’s dark paintings which suggested kindly to him that
The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters and devastating devils of which
He was one if he followed fanaticism’s religious distortion on his way to hell

She sang with love
She flew with glee...
A bounce in her wings from tree to tree.
He stood there and watched her in awe,
A creature so beautiful and so free!
The shiny colorful wings so bright,
watching her glide in the air brought him sheer delight.
Growing fond of him every day,
Perched on his shoulder,
to his house she happily went away.
Now the criss cross gold grills her sky...
He got the best of things for her he could buy.
And with her enthralling songs she sang him to sleep
But when the night fell she couldn't help but weep.
He showed her off to his friends and kin,
The colorful little bird who sings for him.
Looking at her in awe they wondered how,
A creature of the sky is acting in accordance to his whim...
"Doesn't she long for the sky?
To stretch her wings and fly away?"
So, on a mournful summer day her feathers were trimmed to her dismay!
Days sped past and nights went by,
The lonely creature pined for an open sky.
Her feathers lost their sheen and voice grew shrill,
She loved him yet
But lived with him not at will.
When she had had her wings,
for her freedom she never even tried her wings to flap,
for his love was nothing but a trap.
And now when she longs to escape from his hut;
She can't do much as her wings have been cut!
Summers turn into autumn as the clock ticks by,
He stands by her cage letting out a remorseful sigh.
All she really loved was to sing and fly;
But he has cut her feathers and left her to die!
Appreciated, loved & admired but so, so terribly lost
in a world inside my head that I felt like I could escape but at what cost?
$20 for a dub to fill my pipe up so I can smoke
a small price to pay for all of my trust to be broke
everything I wanted to be suddenly turned to
as I filled my pipe up so I could take another hit
I wondered when I became a crackhead, a fiend, a whore
appreciated, loved & admired were feelings I felt no more
anger plagued my heart as my world tragically fell apart
my mind was riddled with guilt & shame
I became an addict & myself was the only person to blame
lying & cheating became part of my daily life & it became really hard to tell wrong from right
But I swear I didn't mean to hurt you or cause you any pain ,
remember when you've lost everything you also have everything to gain
gain yourself back & find joy in the things you used to love
ask God for a sign from the Heavens above
a reason to get sober & stay clean
because I no longer identify as a crackhead, a whore, or a fiend
I'm whole again...maybe still a little lost but that's okay
I'm rediscovering myself more & more every single day
The snow on the ground reminded me that I, too, can be made clean again
free from the addiction, the madness, the evil sin
free from the dope pipe, the lifestyle, & my old ways
I'm grateful that I can be made new & whole again today because $20 for dub to fill my pipe up so I can smoke is not something worth doing anymore, I know that for sure
appreciated, loved & admired
I'm thankful for another chance to get this right
of course when the darkness is over, you can see the light
as lost as I once was I know I can find myself again a little at a time
& I refuse to dim my light, I'm just gonna let it shine
Honeybee Innocence
by Odin Roark
Transporting would be routine
The colony waited
Where thousands of fellow creatures
Respectfully deposited their wealth
Their joyful survival
It meant no harm
But the small boy couldn’t hear
After all
Honeybees can’t talk
Can they?
He had trod on the simple life
Now
Running up the hill
There throbbed within the pain
A lesson of love
A bee
A Boy
Never to really understand one another
How could he know
The creature merely reacted
Innocence acted in the dark
The bee was gathering love
Ultimately giving her life to defend
How foreign this experience remained
The boy grew
The man emerged
Discovering stings of the heart
The mind
Far out-pained the innocent bee’s barbed defense
In spite of the years
The experience stayed with him
And far down the road
As in war
Where trodding upon innocent creatures
Became the collateral norm
That one honeybee
That one creature that meant no harm
Remained the death that started a lesson
The first death he couldn’t resolve
The defensive death he dwelled on
The guilt that haunted his PTSD treatment
How simple the experience
How resistant the lesson
Why is that
He wondered
It was a special party of a rich personality
All big and known names with there
I too was invited because I knew a family member
Not used to attending big parties, I observed others
All ladies dressed in best attire flaunting their beauty
Males trying to impress females
All trying to demonstrate they are the best
Each boasting about how great he is
About costly purchases made, his achievements
I wondered what are these people trying to achieve
Boosting their egos
Trying to be number one
What will they get by doing that?
Real beauty lies within
Real achievement is not in spending on self
but in helping the needy
Isn't humility the greatest of all virtues?
A world of lies
A life of pretence on borrowed money
So much just to impress others
Is it not stupidity?
Or
May be I am different.

Inspiration : Party folk contest by Julia Ward
he panted heavily
muscles twitching in his naked body
running frenzied, without looking back,
he shouted, “He is after me.... my life”
a rip roaring cry....!
the traffic halted
pedestrians stopped
people from shops came out
women through curtained windows peeped
children stopped their play
“so drunk”.... a man murmured
“A crack”.... someone shouted
“coming right after an orgy”
sneered, an oldie...
“pity on him...! Take him to an asylum”
one gentleman suggested.
he needs help, majority opined
‘nab this plague’, the moral police quipped
what is he running from...?
an assailant....?
corona virus....?
his own phantom...?
two sane men staying,
at a corner wondered.
they had masks on their face
“must be a health worker”..!
one of them said...
“yes, the subtle nuances of a cracked mind”
the other agreed!
as the scene on the road,
had grown into a high voltage drama,
dissensions grew and multiplied!

When I was a child
With innocence of pride
I believed in fairy tales
I recited nursery rhymes
I loved Christmas and stories told
Of a king born in a manger
Never to get old
I had hopes an dreams
To reach the sky
But I had an awakening
When I could not fly
I soon got to learn
That there is reality
As i travelled along
Life's highway
That there are twists and turns
We must traverse
There are mountains and valleys
Some with lush verges
Some overgrown
With things we love
With things we detest
My starry eyed notion
A thing of the past
As reality confronts me
Separating the future and the past
As experience moved me upstream
There was much I learnt
About myself, nature, and the universe
That were consistent in their desire
With a continuity and certainty, one would aspire
But that could not be said of humans
As they changed their demeanour
In a will to win
Just like a chameleon changes its attire
Changes it's skin
I wondered and wondered
What was the plan
To contaminate this planet
With humans
Who are so obsessed to
Forge a design
Not one which compliment nature
Or comforts the mind
But are set to explore the outer realms
To continue their contamination
To the outer regions
To their bitter end
I travelled and travelled
With derision and strife
I saw turmoil
I saw celebrations too
I saw life's reflections
In all shades and hues
i saw the things we failed to do
And now I reflect
In my twilight years
There is only one regret
I would like to share
If only I had the power to spare
I would let the animals rule
So you humans
You better beware.
