I sold my accordion ‘cause I couldn’t find the time to play.
Some bum stole my fishin’ pole, but I hardly used it anyway.
I spent my “vacation” pullin’ stumps to clear the lower ten.
And last week that old antique diesel generator broke again.
I should be mucking out the stable. I should be harvesting the wheat,
But when there’s hotcakes on the table, I guess it’s time to take a seat.
Ya don’t need an artist’s soul for to straighten out a crooked frame.
Just stand tall and face the wall; every level’s gonna be the same.
I’m done diggin’ postholes and the generator’s back on line.
The cat’s loose, there’s no excuse not to be my honey’s valentine.
I do my chores as best I’m able; go through ‘em once and then repeat,
But since there’s hotcakes on the table, I’m sure it’s time to take a seat.
I wash up and settle in when my angel fixes me a meal,
Her nightgown all draped around what I’m hopin’ she will soon reveal.
Though I’ve got incentive and the energy to run the farm,
There’s no way I’m bailing hay when my baby takes me by the arm.
She serves a steaming stack of hotcakes; they’re always sugar maple sweet
And when she lays it on the table, I know it’s time to take a seat.
Note: The following dialogue is between the voice of Mother Nature and the voice of man.
It is dedicated to the countless victims of the earthquake-induced tsunami in Samoa.
My Ring of Fire sets ready to erupt
For I, Mother Nature, have had enough
Of pollutants invading reservoirs
And oil-drilled coastlines, sands coated by tar
How thankful we are for this plentiful earth
Proceeds and profits boast our corporate worth
Our mistakes and errors in destructive ways
Mother Nature will repair in a matter of days
Sea creatures poisoned by hazardous waste
Trash left on beaches by people in haste
Sea oats destroyed as construction proceeds
Turtle hatchlings wandering toward man made beams
The land is aplenty with resources so fine
We can wash away the debris, reap when mined
Mercury, chemical and oils as well
Mother Nature will dilute as we continue to sell
Whales wash up and expire on ocean shores
Battleships litter the deepest sea floors
With thinning ozone, sea temperatures rise
Igniting rage in my volatile eyes
Another tanker runs aground of the Alaska coast
Insurance companies payout, our boards in toast
We can rely on our refineries and oil wells
For Mother Nature will replace and it will all be swell
Earthquakes, tsunamis are my weapons
Earth’s last days may be man’s time to reckon
We will reap the rewards as our conglomerates grow rich
Mother Nature will allow, our industrial snitch
Morning sunlight washes across me,
like a ripple crossing a pond,
awakens my senses to a garden,
where my life is.
I sit among flowers
and inhale fragrant scents.
Free my burdens, listen to the wind,
allow my heart to feel young again,
to dream of times forgotten,
when I ran through life's meadows,
conquering the world, seeking treasure.
I hold these memories close,
so I may find them in days of gray,
when tears will fall on sacred ground,
that was my life.
In this solitude,
I'll come to reflect on times of sadness,
that came and went without fault.
I'll touch moments when I found paradise,
when I caressed the face of love
and flew with eagle's wings,
to places where imagination and reality fought,
leaving my beaten body,
to wash up on the empty shores of loneliness,
as I sought refuge from my own illusions.
It's there where I found this garden,
where my soul rests,
dancing across time touching rainbows and wishes,
listening to birds sing among the humming of bee's wings,
finding comfort with the treasures I found,
placing them in the lonely spaces of my heart,
where they give me pause to smile.

Acquainted with love again
I soon recovered from past pain
I met this goddess in a tight black dress
I peaked Kilimanjaro, at the sight of her, I must confess
We exchanged digits and addresses too
She said she loved me and I said “I love you”
Problem is that she lived in the far away
But I said I got to have her as she left with a hypnotic sway
So, you guessed it, I placed in a box my healed heart
It was as good as new and wouldn’t break apart
Sent it to her overseas by FedEx
Yep I was horrified at what happen next
The bloody plane crashed in the sea
With a lone survivor, nobody knew where he could be
I hear the sod washed up on an island beach
My heart was drenched in tears and out of reach.
However, the boxes all wash up on the shore
The bugger ripped them open but mine he kept aside on the floor
Every box he ripped I felt it in my chest
I silently said please, not the one with the gold crest
Anyway I think he was feeling what I was going through
As he developed a pain in and didn’t know what to do
The pain was severe, a bloody tooth ache
Which the poor bugger knocked out with the blade of an ice skate
My heart was telling him what to do
And he knew that this box was now important to him too
Eventually he mustered the courage to leave the island on a raft
Which took him some time to build but mastered the craft
When he left the island he took the box his ball friend, Flintstone
And started adrift with a hope to see home
A ship found him passed out floating on the sea
With a box tightly gripped for her from me
They dropped him off in the town where my heart was to be
And he made sure he delivered it himself you see
But a week later I received a box with a note
That sank my heart and choked my throat:
“I love you my Sidney but your love was too late”
“I finally received it but I couldn’t wait”
“I have married now and I hope you did too”
“I return your heart and remember that I love you”
So if you were ever wondering what was in that FedEx box
It was my broken heart wrapped in a pair of warm wooly socks…
wash up and lock our doors
overnight we’re told to stay indoors
while mankind is under attack
it’s the best we can do to win a war
against our invisible common enemy
time caught in a meaningless loop
like everyone I hold my breath and introspect
I look to past memories with gratitude
realizing we can’t take life for granted
I try to be my own best friend
within these walls of isolation
never was it clearer how both
joy and freedom reside within
appreciating time alone
unlearning accumulated
false deadlines and necessities
pretend friends and priorities
life being random
all you can do is bring out
the best of yourself
and spin the wheel
it’s luck of the draw but
attitude remains a choice
no matter what stay positive
complaining is self-defeating
make the best out of every situation
lest we suffer the fate of fallen dinosaurs

I wanted to wear my best outfit to school
So I went in my closet and stood on a stool
Looking for my socks, I had a special pair
I kept looking, but couldn't find them anywhere
Bright ones and dark ones, three in a pack
But the ones I wanted , were purple and black
I found them, so I didn't wear polkadot or green
Wore them with short pants, so that they would be seen
Finally when ready I headed for the bus
Mom made me late with all of her fuss
I ran really fast in hopes I'd catch up
Unfortunately tripping, on my little brown pup
Down I went with force on both knees
It seems I have a kinda clumsy disease
I got up and wiped, the dust off my pants
and suddenly was doing my gotta tinkle dance
So I ran to my neighbor "Please, I gotta go pee!"
Mrs. Smith said "sure, down the hall at door three."
Past her I ran, by her picture of Flipper
Into the bathroom but couldn't open my zipper
The rest was embarrassing I hung my head low
As the wetness on my pants, started to grow
Around me I wrapped, a towel of great size
Leaving the bathroom, I couldn't look in her eyes
She hugged me and said, "it's an okay thing."
"I have the perfect pair, of cool pants to bring."
She said they were magic, with a button fly
And could only fit a fun little guy!
After she let me wash up, I put on the pants
She said with them, I wouldn't do the tinkle dance
Purple and black with perfect matching socks
Boy Mrs. Smith that woman really rocks
With my new pants, I made it to the school
But before I went, I thanked her for being cool
Kindness is special it made things A okay
I thought of her, when I went to play
A bit of kindness turned my day bright
A friend is an angel who makes things allright
So in art class I made her a special card
Me in my special pants and us both laughing hard!
Ahhh, Sunday
That just-don't-do-a-lot day
My I-don’t-give-a-jot day
Just-have-a-little-fun day
Batteries charged for Monday
A lie-in-bed-a-while day
A neighbour-with-a-smile day
An after-dinner-nap day
A kitten-on-your-lap day
A plan-that-went-awry day...
A get-the-washing-dry day
A cut-and-strim-the-lawn day
Wash-up-when-dinner’s-done day
A paint-that-ceiling-twice day
A long-walk-with-the-wife day
A chop-a-load-of-logs day
A better-bath-the-dogs day
A give-your-grandson-grins day
A just-take-out-the-bins day
This day that follows Saturday
This I’m-completely-shattered day!
Oh heck: Sunday.
Stars like jeans
are made to fade
their blues bleed out
in the wash-up,
in the burn-out,
in their legacies of
spin cycle routines.
But the twinkling glitter
in their burnout flares,
falls like rain
from shooting stars
in shimmering showers,
that cling on tight,
like the curse
of forever chemicals.
No one can ever scrub them clean
from party clothes
washed all alone,
by themeselves,
rinsed and spun,
rinsed and spun,
in washing machine
cycle routines.
So these spun-out,
hang out, party clothes,
are stored shrouded in plastic
to stop the glitter's spread
in the wardrobe,
in the armoire's bottom draws,
to dim the legend’s
endearing stain of
faded fame.
Stars like jeans
are made to fade
the blues bleed out
in the wash-up
in the burn-out,
in their legacies of
spin cycle routines.
She's up in the morning
two hours before dawn
has done most of her chores
before the lights come on
Already milked the cows
and gathered up the eggs
even put liniment
on the horse’s sore legs
Bacon and eggs are cooked
the biscuits are baked brown
the gravy has been stirred
and the plates laid down
Once the pans are empty
the last bread's been buttered
the men tack their horses
while she clears the clutter
Now a fifty mile drive
just to get to the store
to pick up the supplies
they have been waiting for
Time to fry the chicken
and put beef in the beans
cause stomachs on the ranch
are never full it seems
After serving the meal
and cleaning up the mess
she'll ride out to the range
and work beside the rest
She has to be able
to ride fence, rope and brand
just as good as any
of those other hired hands
When the day is over
tired and hungry as hell
the men wash up and get
set for the supper bell
She'll be in the kitchen
cooking vittles again
Cause work for a ranch wife
never comes to an end
