Soldier
They march as one as a unit
With discipline they stand lucid
Into battle, they are ready
On a narrow path feel their furry
As bullets fly by
In combat they are brave in the sky
With courage in green they protect
For we will never forget
War is upon us all
All four branches in the military stand tall
In the desert there is difficulty
On the front lines it is bloody
With honor they protect with their lives
Silver in hand is sharp like a knife
For they are so far away from home
We acknowledge the sacrifices you made, you are not alone
Camouflage painted in green and black
We thank our soldiers for coming back
While the plains fly high in the sky
Our military troops fight, we will never say good by
A lonely road is unforgiven
As Americans, we will lift your burdens
In closing I write this letter for you
In testimony I can’t thank you enough for what you do
Our enemies drew first blood
With Amo and guns, we’ve all had enough
To all those who have fallen hard
We give back with honor a purple heart.
It has been a long journey under the sun
Lay down the violence for it is done

Dixie Cup Memorial
                  by Odin Roark

How small it is
this bottom of the Dixie cup
looking skyward
holding high the torch
the unemployment check
of another kind

Held aloft with no regrets
Half full
Half empty
All the same
Someone had to shoulder the orders

Now in desert camo-dress
his prosthetic hand holds forth
watching fingers pass over
some manicured
with pennies
some scabbed and scarred
with singles
even children's innocent fingers
dropping their nickels and dimes

Many have acknowledged this
His back-home identity
His calling card
His shingle
His name plate

The mind huddles close now
few copper and silver
no blankets of green
no ingots of gold

A note floats downward
swathing reality

Thank you for your service

Would you like a job?

What are your skills?

Can you relocate?

Sure
he says
his eyes lingering
upon his severed legs
each knee projecting its solitary reality
Purple Heart pinned securely to the right

Just let me gather today's windfall
2 pennies
1 nickel
3 quarters
1 subway token

Relocating again

Travel

Enough to get me there

Pocketing the Dixie cup
his hook and knuckles pull forward
surging his mover's dolly
transporting Faith's hidden hope

Ahead
looking back
his benefactor strides onward
his missing arm yet another lost appendage of honor
his smile a projection of comaradery
his Ooh-rah a respect never ignored

Not far he says

Not far

Premium Member I Stood Among Heroes Today

I stood among my nation's heroes on this sacred Veterans Day,
To honor the living and those who sleep 'neath hallowed clay.
Their youth now long gone, they wear crowns of silvery hair.
Alas, many steadied themselves with cane, others in wheeled chair.

I stood beside a gallant survivor of the Pearl Harbor Affair.
As "Taps" sounded, his mist-filled eyes had a far away stare.
His trembling lips moved silently, no doubt in heartfelt prayer,
In remembrance of his valiant comrades, who yet lie sleeping there.

Surrounding me were many courageous former prisoners-of-war,
Who, despite grim adversity maintained their esprit de corps,
And with faith in God and America, they were at last set free,
To see Old Glory wave once again o'er the Land of Liberty!

I mingled with members of The Order Of the Purple Heart.
Heroic Battle of the Bulge veterans stood tall and smart!
The "Greatest Generation" with brave comrades stormed alien shores.
The "Latest Generation" served in Korea, Vietnam, Cold and Desert Wars!

Gnarled hands that once held the terrible weapons of war,
Now beckoned for peace that we shall know war no more.
The hardships they suffered for freedom's sake we'll never know.
So much, so very much to these brave men and women we owe!

Premium Member I Always Recognize the Teeth of a Wolf

He has the kind of evil inside that every woman wants
They follow him as if he is candy; a pied piper of sweet
he is anything but, so I guess this is what attracts them

I am an empath; being so, I can see through his purple heart.
Not the kind the brave acquire, rather the kind evil ones are born with.
His aura is murky and muddy, the darkest gray.

The others flock to him, sheep to the slaughter.
I do not warn them. This is their destiny, their life path.
I thank God that this time around it is not mine.

He used to try to get me to believe in him.
Transmogrifying himself in tiny ways, to fool me.
I always recognize the teeth of a wolf.

Operation Enduring Freedom and the Purple Heart

The United States a country that thrives;
with strong men and women that are willing
to safeguard their loved country with their lives.
They march to a world that's unforgiving.

They never know how they will be received,
peaceful or with brash aim, long-dullness tire.
They're left vulnerable, sometimes deceived.
Confusion in front and rages inspire.

Underfoot the sounds of rock and gravel,
explosive bombs that have been camouflaged.
Towns and land, they travel to unravel.
The bolster morale being sabotaged.

Home wounded and marred, lack of confidence,
Purple Heart for a farewell performance.

Premium Member LOVE DERAILED

LOVE DERAILED

Whose unscathed heart has dared to love,
for to love is to feel the pain.
Is it true love that hurts not the heart,
or just two passing trains?

In the best of times, dinner and wine,
when love feels like it shoud.
Dither and doubt linger about.
That dirt makes it hurt so good.

Love isn't fair, tis all but a dare,
arrogant, selfish, obtuse.
The winners gloat only in the grave
losers go back to the caboose.

Old lines and hard times denigrate the steel
making the cars woble and sway.
Even riding the smoothest rail,
clickety clack clickety clack, all day.

Left at the station, the end of the line,
Infatuation's purple heart.
The grotesque beauty of attraction
tis the angst of most great art.

When pain's embraced you've lost the race,
there is nothing left to see.
Bought and paid for, gelded and roped
like voluntary slavery.

If on romance you've take the chance,
I wish you the very best.
End of the line of the honeymoon train
It's all down hill for the rest.

A Man In Central Park

A kaleidoscope of colors
Pictures etched in chalk
He draws not on a canvas
But on a worn out cement block

He spends his days in the park
On a path lined with rock
He possesses nothing more
Than a tin can full of chalk

He wears a T and faded jeans
Frayed at all the seams
Beneath his worn out sailors hat
He carries all his dreams

He draws a peaceful valley
And horses running free
A field of golden poppies
Beneath an old oak tree

A lady dressed in crimson red
Waving a sorrowful goodbye
He pauses for just a moment
To wipe a teardrop from his eye

Everyday you admire his work
Then continue with your stride
But do you ever look at him
And wonder what’s inside

His shrouded thoughts and feelings
Beyond your visual range
Or do you dismiss him as a bum
And toss him your spare change

He lives each day for the moment
Haunted by a wartime past
Although he adorns a purple heart
He's viewed a social outcast

His visions spilled upon the pavement
Is what earns his daily bread
So rather than pass him by
Won’t you give to him instead

For it wasn’t all that long ago
That he gave to you and me
By defending our beloved homeland
And keeping America free

Judge not this unsung hero
For the way he makes his living
Many have already condemned his soul
Yet this soldier keeps on giving

Lannie Johnson (Mr. Superintendent) (My Secret Sin)

Split two razors and a line of coke
Exhale the dimes and swallow the smoke
Nine-twenty-one, eighty-six
Gamble my life like lottery picks
Cry tears of blood and see what your god does
Bringing future problems
To those who so desperately want to solve them
And to think that I could be all but immortal
Swap Sorrow and throw my sins through a portal
How did you make my list
The elements that have gotten me pissed
Tears no longer fall from my left eye
What more can I do, besides consume meth and die
“Curious to know why”
No one wants “Sweet” to reach the top
Better yet pull out the heat and beg them to stop
Now I’m more than desperate to leave such an ungodly world
Depressed as a toddler that’s oddly curled
The accusations you brought
The courtroom battles I’ve fought
I’ll never make it to heaven
For I could never forgive you
The only punishment
Is to lift you from hell and give you
I’ve taken this community to a level
In which the sunrise ain’t even elevated, Ever!
Just another angel with forehead extensions
Suspect is inching
Next to me, your platform is a pondering invention
Only faces with political smiles receive honorable mentions
Got a purple heart, for smirking in the dark
Jotting things down with my right hand
Seems you got to fight to stand
And I’m back from the edge of town
Carrying a bloody sledge, my heavily hearted frown

Premium Member DRUM ROLL PLEASE

Steady beat
Orchestra plays
Trumpet sounds
A Soldier goes to war, but might not come back
Every sunrise and sunset
Every foot stepping march moving in courage
Every salute being an honor
Symbolic nature
Eye on individual military uniform
Thank you for your service
Echoes of War in sacrifice
The thought of devastation
Ashes that rise with a darkened shade
Front and center made by a Soldier
Purple Heart reminder
Commitment
Mission Control
The Soldier taking whole
The Battlefield
Point of circumstance
Situation at hand
Ammunition response
Music extending in the distance
A soldier’s life cut short in an instance
The aftermath
A final salute and departure
Every effort that was made
Fulfillment of service
Drum roll honor
Salute
