Eulogy
Sing eulogy, O wind,
Crying out the sorrow,
Howling deep within your zephyr,
For branches where you once entwined
Your restless fingers
Into a joyful melody of rustling boughs
In lyric song;
Hear now, as you pass, only memories
Floating on the air in search of forest arms
Where once the lullaby of giants
Spread like peace at eventide
Over every creature who daily felt
The vibrant, primal heartbeat
At the mystic center sustaining life.
Sing eulogy, O wind,
When you rush across the empty mountainside,
Where once the titans of the century welcomed you
With lofty grace as you orchestrated
Their symphony of seasons come,
Your searching swell frantically seeks for
Playmates of a thousand years;
Your cannot reach out with your arms
To lift the sparrows and the robins,
Nesting in their wombs,
Upon your wings
Nor cool the squirrels hiding beneath their skirts
Of rough, red bark;
The hillsides where you sang with grandeur
Lay as hushed and as chilled as marble tombs
That decorate man’s passing;
Death walked upon these paths
Leaving in deep chilling footprints barren hills to raise their
Voices in a wailing rage
Of mournful sighs on desolated plains and mountain slopes.
Sing eulogy, O wind,
Look upon the sun warmed earth,
Your friends with whom you shared the secret words
Of your song,
Who whispered with your every murmur
By lifting up their giant faces
In gratitude for the winter’s gift of sleep
And summer’s rain,
Lie still;
Your shout of mourning unheard,
Death closes up their ears to all
But it’s eternal dirge
And though you long to caress
Their lifeless forms,
They cannot feel your loving hands
Upon their brows
In a final gesture of farewell
Before they leave their forest arbor
Still abounding with their perfume -
The myrrh of burial for guardians
Whose life protected life
Where shadows intermingled.
Sing eulogy, O wind,
Then weep,
No resurrection for companions
Until the earth revolves
A thousand times
Around the sun
When they repeat refrains of joy
In creation’s pristine voice
With you –
With woodland peers –
Their voices silenced here to ears
That heard their chanting
And now must carry in the silence
Of their souls
A seed of memory
To tell the future’s child
A fable tale of giants
Passing now away.
Old growth redwoods now gone.
Being born in the Year of the Monkey did not affect me at all
Except I love surprising, tricking and playing with people.
Trees are my favorite places to be and I hang upside down often.
I like the chitter chatter of lunchrooms, so I guess I was wrong.
It affected me a tiny bit.
I am child-like, not childish, but some people do not understand.
The other ones who were born in the Year of the Monkey do.
They are my most avid fans, playmates, and confidants.
We gravitate toward each other, speaking of silly, fun things.
Banana and peanut butter pancakes? Me too! Me too!
You loved the Curious George books? Oh, yes,
And the man in the yellow hat. We resonate with each other.
We are the jokesters, the players, the thrill-seekers.
We are the ones born in the Year of the Monkey
And we all do it well with a sense of fun.
I watch as she sleeps,
the gentle rise and fall of her chest
making sure her breathing is rhythmic
Thoughts take me back years ago
when we were playmates ~sisters
separated by little more than a year.
A tear escapes my eyes. I wipe it away
for if she wakes and sees me crying,
her tears will flow again.
My sister, my best friend
Always vibrant and busy with life
Taking care of everyone
and putting her needs last.
As quickly as a breath was taken
she'd had a stroke
and when she woke
her life had been turned
upside down, mouth drooping
as if she were wearing a frown.
My heart grieves silently
Bleeding with pain I cannot show
for I'll not let her know my fears~
My tears hidden,
I replace them with a smile
and if she would look into my eyes,
she'd know. She'd know my anguish.
Her needs are many~
Slurred speech, limp left arm
Fran, who is gifted with empathy
for the plights of others.
Now, she fights to get her life back.
She sobs when friends call
and I have to say, "She's just emotional."
Damn it! I would be, too!
I tell her it's okay and smile~
Sometimes, she smiles back at me
Sometimes, she turns her head away
We talk about childhood days
and when a haze fills her eyes,
I talk about something silly~
desperate to give her hope.
A blood clot broke free from her brain
at least it had the decency
not to enter her heart.
Distraught, of course she is
but my sister is a fighter
and we work together, day and night
to help her hand grip mine tighter.
It's 4 am, and by the night light
I look at her face, wrinkle free
but only when she's asleep.
I pray to God while I weep,
"Please give her the life she knew."
There's little more I can do
except to be her big sister.
She'll get through this hard time
with help from family and friends
Those who love her as much
as she loves all of us.
We talk about it being another hurdle
she'll get over, but this one...
this one is physical, a literal mountain
that she must climb, but not alone.
There are goals to set and reach
and each step she takes strengthens her will
to be as independent as she used to be.
I sit here, watching her as she sleeps
and only then do I allow my tears to fall.
The yard my world
Or so I’m told
Was where I spent my time
Where this little lass
A tomboy too
Loved rolling in the grass.
Trees ladened with mangoes
yellowed with ripe
A great temptation to this little child
Who with a stone and David’s aim
Brought mangoes down Goliath
style
Playmates I had and many too
From chickens, birds and ducks
To puppies, pigeons, turkeys and cats
Not to mention the upside down bats.
A sister and brother my siblings two
My sister’s a lady no sport for fun
My brother my follower was my ally won
He did what I told Him no questions asked
But got many a spanking when we crossed the line.
The old hammock swung from a branch
That bellied and hung
Quite low to the ground
For many a day both brother and I
swinging to and fro
did topple to the ground.
But best were the moments
I spent with God when we talked of many things
while I blamed Him for everything
that went wrong in my life
Oh those precious memories are the fabric of my life.

God in My Life
(First Part)
My Baptism in Makati
Was like the Annunciation to Mary
Announced was her being Mother of Christ
Announced was my being Christianized
When I was a kid
My playmates I envied
For their having a sibling
So I fervently prayed for that thing
And God answered my prayer
He gave me a sister
And so it was
She lives with us
Our churchgoing was happy in Las Piñas
Every Sunday our parents would treat us
But when we transferred to the province
It has become different ever since
Here I became Valedictorian in elementary
But Salutatorian only in secondary
I lost my being Top 1
And found what mistakes I had done
As I entered college in UP
It was like the 1st Luminous Mystery
College life welcomed me
Baptized in our country's premier university
In my 2nd year in UP
There was a miracle from Mama Mary
She didn't listen to my prayer
Because there was something better
For my remaining years in UP
Allah came to touch me
Through the religion of Islam
I proclaimed God's kingdom
And as I graduated from UP
God greatly transformed me
From being a part-time broadcaster
To being a full-time teacher
First to Korean students in Fermat Academy
Then to college students in Capiz State University
My being a teacher in that institution
Would become for me a Divine Mission
My 1st Sorrowful Mystery
In Capiz State University
Was when I was removed as TED Secretary
When Mar Roxas became Secretary of DILG
My 2nd Sorrowful Mystery
In Capiz State University
Was when I was kicked out from TED
And then Supertyphoon Yolanda devastated
My 3rd Sorrowful Mystery
In Capiz State University
Was when I received bashings & shame
And then Santa Muerte came
My 4th Sorrowful Mystery
In Capiz State University
Was when I was reprimanded
Due to my allegations against TED
My 5th Sorrowful Mystery
In Capiz State University
Was when I lost it finally
And Mar Roxas also lost the presidency

(Dumarao.... based on my
"God in My Life" Spiritual
& Religious Memoir)
I saw him in an old farmer's cowhouse, Dancing and playing with other playmates, He was alone among the birds in the black house, I was certainly attracted by his catchy traits,
Felt mercy on him for his loneliness, Wanted to pull out his pointless isolation,
And got him for a few hundreds, my goodness,
Freed him in my farm with hesitation,
Few months had moved suddenly, He controlled the complete farm boldly, Had become a most matured adult lovely, His gobbler frightened all the fowls mostly,
He was nearly eight kilograms in ninety days, The labours were feared to feed the wild bird, Surprisingly my dog was afraid to maintain the space, Was he an arrogant adolescent multibird? .
He walked like a majestic military man, His nine inches prolonged beard made him proud, Never missed noticing the wild anchor man, I was very happy to hear the Turkey's sound.
In the fifties, my sister and I would play store;
selling ice cream and candy just like our grandpaw.
Granny let us delve into her spare button box
where we found the coins for our special cash drawer.
We sorted them all out by size and by color
marking some as quarters, nickels, pennies or dimes.
Imagination was the best of our playmates;
we even had half-dollars, the rarest of finds.
Last year we two met to go shopping just for fun;
can you guess what awaited me and my sister?
Brand-new buttons made of honest-to-God live coins.
We found all the reg’lar ones, but no half-dollar.
We giggled as we shopped, pretending like old times.
Strangest thing we discovered along with this find -
the penny buttons? no cheaper than the quarters.
The cost of the buttons did not match with their kind!
Georgie
His was a pudgy boyish countenance,
With rounded river eyes and an Alfalfa smile.
He wheezed like a sick tern with repeated asthma attacks,
Playing hard at the various outdoor games and chases,
Of our fleeting childhood years in the inhaling sun.
He perspired profusely in 1964 as he sat with beads of sweat which
Gathered like a water pox above his lips, all in a wheezing row.
Bespectacled Georgie was the curlicued, black-haired boy
who lived two houses up from ours; the one with the green hedge.
He wore converse sneakers, a white tee and blue denim, with
Thick black-framed glasses astride his chubby white face.
His was a temper not sought by anyone, including Elsie his mother.
Georgie was her little boy, but when angered, baseball bats went flying.
Curse words were screamed loudly with one’s birth name questioned intensely.
Stones and large rocks were heaved at innocent windows and nearby statuary.
Baseballs were hurled at the heads of other little boys, with misses near and far.
Toy darts were skipped across baking sidewalks to the bare feet of his playmates,
Producing more loud voices shrieking in pain when the darts impaled their feet.
Oranges and lemons were rabidly picked for the purpose of pummeling one’s nose;
But gentle mother Elsie loved her little Georgie, and his little blue inhaler.
Years and decades sailed by like lost boats in a starless harbor.
Little Georgie grew into a pudgy man with nothing changed except, the drugs.
Marijuana odors hovered like invisible swarms of masticating locusts,
Lurking above the silent brick houses of our street, with old Georgie lighting up.
With a pipe and a baggie in his pocket, my old friend gave up on his life.
He decided not to work, but to take aimless walks down deserted avenues;
Day after empty day he took his drifting strolls into a personal oblivion.
We subsequently lost contact in the ensuing decades, and I forgot about him.
Until recently… I found out…
Georgie’s funeral took place 25 years ago at Rose Hills Cemetery.
Rest in piece old friend, old tormentor, with your little blue inhaler.

Summer season was my childhood’s greatest fun time,
We played with toys out of a coconut tree which is a tree of life,
We built little houses beautifully and so high as we climbed
Like a flying trapeze on its leaves, we swung so high.
We played with toys made of coconut trees, the tree of life,
My playmates joined me in building little houses using a dull knife,
Out of its leaves and midribs, we made walls, roofs and doors,
Pretended as good cooks with its coconut shells and fruits.
My playmates joined me in building little houses using a dull knife
Pretended to live together as families with husband and wife,
I took the role of an elder sister in our little comfortable house
I combed the hair of a younger sibling with a coco midrib brush.
Pretended to live together as families with a husband and wife
Just like small neighborhood or community along the riverside
We chose one of the eldest playmates to be the group captain,
The leader of unity and cooperation in building more tents.
Just like small neighborhood or community along the riverside
We helped one another as piles of coco leaves we made as rides,
We made unique toys out of leaves and roots as much as we could
Like trumpets when blown, we covered our ears for its loud sound.
We helped one another as piles of coco leaves we made as a ride
We webbed balls, insects and other toys for a surprise to hide,
When the captain signaled to show who's the most had a reward
Then ran with our wind vanes to the beach and marched forward.
We webbed balls, insects and other toys for a surprise to hide
We played with toys out of a coconut tree which is a tree of life,
When the captain signaled us to show the most had a reward
A wonderful summer memory from a Tree of Life I've ever had!
Sept. 11,2012
Note: The coconut trees are considered the “Trees of Life”. They can provide almost all the things we need like shelter, clothing, foods and others. So, let us preserve coconut trees! They are very helpful but be careful because they are also risky during typhoons, LOL. There are many coconut trees in our backyard especially along the riverside connecting to the beach. These trees had added so much joy on summer time during my childhood years/graders.
