Nineteen sixty-four in the month of October
is a time Phillies fans don’t want to remember.
With a six and a half game lead in September,
victory was expected by each team member.
Philadelphia’s baseball squad was in first place.
For most of the summer, they were setting the pace.
With only two weeks remaining in the season,
an imminent pennant winning was the reason
for joy and jubilation in Philadelphia.
Anticipating fans were filled with euphoria.
However, that World Series trip was not to be.
A strange quirk of fate would alter their history.
There were only twelve more games to go.
The Phillies lost ten of them in a row.
It seems all went wrong and nothing went right.
The team lost those games during day and night.
They finally won on the season’s last day.
However, the team saw the pennant slip away.
A second place finish signaled the end of a dream.
First place went to the St. Louis Cardinals team.
It was here in this moment of sadness
where Phillies World Series tickets became worthless.
After that infamous period of disgrace,
many years passed before a title would take place.
Flawless
Down in Florida on the twenty-ninth of May,
the Phillies had a pitcher named Roy Halladay.
There was a show in store for Phillies fans in town.
In each inning, three came up and three went down.
In this one game during a pennant chase,
not one Florida Marlin could reach first base.
The only run scored on an error by Cameron Maybin.
However, that was all the Phils needed to win.
When it was all over, Roy pitched a perfect game.
There is no better way for a pitcher to achieve fame.
Flawed
A Major League team that used to be in Montreal,
is now in Washington, DC playing the game of baseball.
In the nation’s capital, they are again playing the game.
The “Nationals” is this baseball team’s name.
They have poor hitting, lousy pitching, and make errors by the score.
As a team goes, they are the same as they were before.
To see where they stand, they need a periscope.
The team is in bad shape will little immediate hope.
The Nats have given their fans little to cheer for each season.
Their annual dismal performance is the paramount reason.
I've got to say this from the start
Hate me though, you may!
I'm from Philly, born and raised
To God and sports we pray!
When I was just a little girl
The Phillies beat them all
I wanted to marry Michael Schmidt
Sure we would have a ball!
I worked so very hard at school
To earn a bunch of A's
Because the Philly paper gave
Free tickets out as praise!
And as I grew my team has had
Its share of downs and ups
But win or lose, I like tight pants
And cold beer in my cups!
My mother was a Phillies fan
And I find it oh so fitting
That the last time they were World Champs
We at her wake were sitting.
Major League Baseball is now like all the rest.
A team no longer has to finish first to be the best.
Teams with mediocre records can win it all,
just the way they do in hockey, football, and basketball.
The St. Louis Cardinals proved it wasn’t hard.
They would not have made the playoffs without the Wild Card.
The Phillies had the best record with their pitching aces.
However, the Cardinals made them fall flat on their faces.
After that, most of you know the rest of the story.
A World Series win gave the Cardinals glory.
Then came the old perennial saying quite clear.
All the losing teams said, “Wait Until Next Year”.
Fans were calling the late John Quinn a clown.
For what he did, they wanted to run him out of town.
He traded away right handed pitcher Rick Wise.
Rick was considered the Phillies top prize.
He led the team in wins during the season.
His pitching a no-hitter was another reason.
Quinn sent him to the Cardinals for Steve Carlton.
Well, this was later called Philadelphia’s best trade.
Phillies fans were so glad the trade was made.
Four Cy Young Awards for Carlton came later.
Among left handed pitchers, few were greater.
With over three hundred wins, he made himself a name.
Steve earned enshrinement into the Hall of Fame.
Being a Philadelphia sports fan
is like being a Hawaiian who likes icicles... what's the point
I barely remember the two years the Flyers won in the seventies
Now the Sixers in 83 that was amazing, but since then...nothing
When I was fifteen I seen the Phillies win it all back in 1980
The next time they won it all I had a son who was fifteen, 28 long years
Oh, and the Eagles, they never won at all, but they're the "gold standard of the league"
In desperation I once rooted for a horse named Smarty Jones to win the Triple Crown
He was from Philly
You guessed it, He lost at the wire as my son and I watched in the rain
on the Parkway right near the Rocky statue
In fact, Rocky is this towns biggest sports hero, shame he's imaginary.
But as of late I have been cheering my mighty Sixer's
Just honoring the guy who made famous the 'who needs practice' quote
They have now lost 21 in a row, a team record
Now our sights are set on the league record at 26 loses in a row
I may take off from work that day
Maybe take a lunch and go downtown and eat with Rocky
Hopefully it isn't raining
For sixty-one years it would lie.
It was there in plain view
to all passersby
at Twenty-first Street
and Lehigh Avenue.
Baseball teams would meet
and play each home game.
The place first opened in 1909.
Athletics in the American League would compete
with many players achieving fame.
Many of those teams playing there were fine.
The Eagles also played football.
The Phillies moved there in 1938.
Those teams performed with fans to enthrall.
Many sports memories originating there were great.
The Athletics moved away after 1954.
Connie Mack Stadium would be the new name.
The city honored the man who's a member of the Hall of Fame.
Phillies teams continued to play there some more.
The last game was played in 1970.
After that, the place would soon be a memory.

I'm not a baseball fan, but I seen what I saw.
Which was the closest thing I've seen to ILL-Na-Na.
Is it possible for the Phillies to lose a game?
And, with NOLA pitching, to that, I will refrain.

I was honored to have had a one-on-one intro with Mr. Poitier, in 1977, Oakland, CA. I found him to be a passionate man of his industry and one who bears a considerable measure of compassion ... he will be sorely missed.
Surrounded by loved ones, Poitier died at his Beverly Hills home in California of cardiopulmonary failure, (02/20/27-01/06/22) at 94.

Proven to be a player of the best kind,
to the Phillies, you have been quite a find.
