Black Friday

The day after Thanksgiving I didn't have to work
So, I decided to do something which was kind of a quirk.

I thought I would do some early shopping
For those Christmas gifts that would be eye popping.

As I started my car to begin my store raid
Something went amiss to stop my escapade.

I opened the hood to find the problem there
When I saw it, it really gave me a scare.

Our neighbor's black cat had crawled onto the engine block
Feeling the warmth, but not taking stock.

When I turned the key to give it a start
The cat shrieked as its tail was nearly cut apart.

Oh, it wasn't intentional that I hurt that poor pet
But you've never seen anything like it I'll bet.

When I heard the noise and the hissing you see,
I thought one of the hoses had broken...leaking fluently.

But it was the cat that was hissing when I raised the hood
All he could think of was to jump for where I stood.

With claws all out and teeth set to bite
Him coming at me was quite the site.

Fortunately he missed me with his outstretched paws,
Or I would have been really attached to those razor like claws.

When he hit the ground he ran away
Scared the crap out of me...that's all I'll say.

So I had to collect myself before I could go anywhere
Went back to the house and just stood shaking there.

Of course, I had to have a pop or two
To settle my nerves before I started anew.

Before I knew it, I was asleep in a chair
I never attempted to go anywhere.

All because a black cat wanted to keep warm
In the end, I was thankful I did so little harm.

"Black Friday" would have cost me a heck of a lot more
Had it not been for that cat's dozing for sure.

So, now whenever I go to the store
I buy some cat food, for that kitty next door.

He still remembers my opening that hood
I still remember him trying to claw me where I stood.

But we've come to an understanding that cat and me
And I tap the car before starting it to let him see.

As it is now...he stays out of my way,
Except when I feed him, for all the money he saved me on "Black Friday".

My Phone!!!

MY PHONE!

Links me within a blink

A quick access to the link

I am far, but just right there

Very near, but miles far away

An awesome chip, which links all trip

My phone, a priceless keep

Sixth sense money can buy

The part of me I cannot miss

Cherished wonder in a pack

Not holding and having you,

 Makes me archaic

Your loss puts me my heart to a flight

Regaining you, extinguishes my plight

My phone, your friendship,

Gives me endless light

When I fiddle and fondle

You are always quiet

A dual harbinger of fate

A toast of sweet and merry

Again, a sip, it gives your sour

Often a time, these are your offering

Some times, you labor for love

Yet, the very tool

To spread the hate

In a kernel, I value your profit

A friend so close

In storm and loneliness

Whatever your brand

You are my best companion

Inseparable is our union

How well you express my thought

A good veil to conceal my many fears

Behind your walls, I boost my nerve

Through you, hearts breaks

Like a paradox, down soul you lift

When I dare ignore you

Within I need you, so badly

All as I crave for peace without you

Being mute a day, torments my peace

Just as your cry, I cannot ignore

Still I desire that pester presence

Much as my own peace

My phone!

Without you, it is tough

With you, stress is tough

Always with me you will be

My phone! A marvel machine

My phone! just wonder piece

My phone! A compendium of all sorts

My phone! A universal a appeal

I love you my phone!

From no one but me.

Yours truly.

A Hometown Hero

Jesse lived in my hometown
Some curious pets stop to see
Like a petting zoo in small-town
the way downtown to get slushy
A crow that could speak could it be
To see sandy a dog shepherd
Coming to the fence petted her
Now much colder a winter’s play
Face in snow a hill cold killer
God saved me a sandy way

Thank you Jesus for sent herder
So cold I could go know further
She woke me dragging home today
Thank you for Jesse and for her

Never Ending Love

Born in a cold basement on Valentine’s Day,
She grew up on newspaper and constant radio play.
She was the runt of the litter and very poorly fed,
When I first laid eyes on her, she looked to be half dead.

But I saw a bright spark, a twinkle in her eye,
She was perfectly imperfect, I could not deny.
Her pure white face with the odd brown polka dot,
Her overbite and broad chest, I loved her on the spot.

At first I felt I had to save this precious little thing,
Later I would realize, it was her who made my heart sing.
She greets every visitor with enthusiasm and glee,
Her kind and gentle nature is so evident to see.

I had planned to get a dog to take on a daily walk,
But exercise is something she has a tendency to balk.
She will play real hard pulling a rope for a minute or two,
Then flop down on the floor to sleep, as if right on cue.

She walks rather slow so I have nick-named her Doodle,
But she outshines any dog from a Great dane to a poodle,
Her innocence is reflected in her stoic face so sad,
She never changes her look, even when she has been bad.

Frankie my English bulldog has been my constant friend,
She supported me unconditionally when my job was at its end,
Then I lost my Mom and my daughter moved away,
Frankie gave me love and at my side she would stay.

I am so grateful that I found this most precious gift,
For that little twinkle in her eye has given me a true lift
Oh I love Frankie my English Bulldog she is the greatest pet,
Her never ending love is the most that one could ever get.

Pet-Sit Panics

I had to dog-sit for my neighbor Ed,
A week I had to watch his miserable purebred,
And his list of rules were plaguing my head,
I hung on every small word that he said,
How “Baron” must be watered and fed,
Or else his precious puppy might just drop dead,
At one o’clock precisely I gave him his med,
With a wine soaked piece of banana nut bread,
Paying close attention to the rules that I read,
“He sleeps with me but you’ll do in my stead,
He likes to snuggle with me on the bed”,
And let me tell you this damn dog shed,
The brown bed I looked at used to be red,
I slipped into the next room’s top bunk bed,
The next morning’s debacle still brings me dread,
There were things on the floor, better left unsaid,
A popped ball and a toy that was little more than shreds,
Of my sneakers all that was left was the tread,
My scarf hung down from the fan overhead,
There must have been something on the list I misread,
Cause nothing about an insane dog was said,
That tears up everything thread by thread,
And from that miserable house I fled,
And to my parents I pled and pled,
“Don’t make me go back, that mutt is brain-dead”
“Can’t we just tie him outside instead”
They replied only if I asked Mr. Ed,
And he refused to give me that go ahead,
His puppy would be burned by infrared,
The panic I felt was definitely widespread,
Stuck with his miserable rules in my head,
Silently wishing his mutt would drop dead,
So I could sleep alone in my own bed,
And not have to worry about rules being misread!

Shawn (For Constance's Contest)

Shawn
(My assigned topic: Pet)

You nuzzled your heart into my soul.
Tiny, cold nosed, and whimpering
Destiny intercepted.
You, God’s gift to lighten my life,
Could have been a junk-yard-dog.
Brave and ferocious like your mama.
Before you, days held no happenings.
Experience and friendships…ordinary –
When warm-furry you lay grunting in my arms,
Life became an adventure.
Instantly friends, we two, connected.
Barely three weeks old, life depended.
And love found me…not alone.
Lolloping beside me in parks,
My eyes sparked!
We two, running and playing
You grew.
Down the slide, through the trees,
Hunting sticks, fetching to please.
We moved across the country
And lived on a hill.
You could count to two or ten.
Find your shoe or just sit still.
You were my thrill.
And so it was until your future fell.
You seemed to be perfect
Until anguish played –
Death due to a rare blood disease
Weeks after surgery, your guts spilled.
Hanging on the ground
All covered with grit and grime
With a sheet wrapped around we sped.
I could not let them put you down.
Not without at least a chance.
Three days of cleansing and antibiotics.
Tears.
And we were lost.
You in paradise somewhere
And me stuck on earth without love, again.
In time, there were others…pets.
But none like you, my first.
So true
And forever –

It's All Humane

It’s All Humane

It’s cold at night and I’m all alone
They said that this is my new home.
The metal cage and cold stone floor
I wish that I could ope the door.

Don’t know what happened, it’s plain to see
The other day I was one of three.
The sky grew dark, and next I knew,
I looked around, and we were two.

A pretty girl came to see, what’s in the cage,
She looked at me.
Her little hands came through and plucked
The other pup, just his luck!

I’m scared in here, and cold and small,
I’d love to wander down the hall,
And maybe find a warm soft bed,
To lay my worried sleepy head.

I’m shaking now, I see the morn.
I guess I’m smaller than the norm.
My one eye shut I cannot see
I limp and shake terribly.

Oh wait here come some little feet
With metal straps and clinking sticks
He seems so cute he has a patch
And oh my gosh, he lifts the latch.

His hands are warm and gentle touch
I think he loves me very much!
He kissed me twice and hugged me tight
I don’t want to be here another night.

“Mommy please, I like this one,
I think we’ll have a lot of fun.”
“And now I know that God can see,
This puppy looks a lot like me.”

Two very happy small new friends
Limp and fall and try to run
A silent pack of bravery
I’ll love you, if you love me.

The Stray

She took me for a walk today
whilst off the lead I met a stray
"how's about you come and play
with me but wait, don't run away".

"I'm not prepared, I'm very scared
I'm living on the streets".
Oh don't do that, we've got a flat
ground floor and very neat.

"That's very kind, I'm going blind
can't see my way at all".
(My luck is in), "you're very thin"
"last meal I can't recall".

No problem there as you can share
my dinner everyday.
"You really would? I really should
be grateful come what may".

Then say no more and to my door
together we will scurry.
Look forward to the day when you
will never need to worry.

"My gratitude cannot exclude
your master and mistress
If not for you and those two too
I'd be in much more distress".

We reached the car, I'd wandered far
away from where we'd parked.
"Where have you been? Oh,he's so lean".
She wasn't all that narked.

My mistress put upon the mutt
her hand and stroked his head.
She may say "no, he'll have to go"
to the pound or worse, instead.

"you poor poor boy now don't be coy
I'll take you home with us.
I'll feed you up, just like a pup.
You'll share a bed with Gus........ that's me that is!

Happy Ending.

Pet-Sit Panics: Severine Veins

Title: Severine Veins

Since Chris and Tamra had to jet
without much plan for the future,
I was bestowed the family pet
who then proceeded to suture

my couch, my drapes, the front screen door
before dashing to bolt outside,
returning in moments with gore
that once held a rabbit inside.

That gray tiger gave me a swipe
each time I tied to intervene
as he revealed his greedy stripe
by picking that poor morsel clean

just like a child at Easter-time
holding a fat, chocolate bunny,
he wolfed-down the fruit of his crime
except the tail, which proved funny;

one little poof of evidence
could convict my treacherous friend
so he hid proof of his offense
by batting his only loose end.

Such is the tale of Severine:
he chose to hunt on his own terms
even if fate plays violin
when he gets infected with worms.

Old Shep and Me

Old shep and me, while
growing up, that's the way
it was.

For this dog was my
best friend I ever had,
wherever I went he
was sure to go.

Waited for me
at the drug store
and the movie theater
week after week.

He was one I could
talk with hour after
hour, troubles were
poured over to him,

he would not take
his eyes off me
until I was through,
then as tears flowed

down my face his
long dark tongue
would wipe them
away, which would
give me a smile.

Bike riding always
found shep along
side of me where-
ever I went.

Shep's home was
under the porch
and that's where
I could always
find him.

After nine beautiful years,
by my side this pal
of mine left this world,

which broke my heart
will never forget
this unforgettable
dog, until the
day I also leave
this world.

wrote 8-27-08

Had shep from 1951 to 1960

He lived from 1946- 1960 I was only three years older than he was.
