I enjoyed my young years crafting poems and art.
At eighteen, I then married the love of my heart.
By my age twenty-four, was a mother of three.
Later, painting with oils was the pastime for me.
Finished college mid-forties with English BA;
as my poetry flourished- put paintings away.
A proud grandma of five- of those married, are two-
a sweet great-grandchild recently made her debut.
Now retired, sold our business- but still on the go;
I'm so blessed with my life, riding each ebb and flow.

My life is very insular, I move from page to page
never straying far from words which prance upon the written stage.
like a sputtering engine my tongue tangles on a phrase
I rub my eyes, red and raw, I can't remove my aged gaze.
My fingers curl and knuckles gnarl as velum dances right
I read, I write, I think and pause, I can't turn out the light.
Compose, I will, adjust I must, each simile an anchor
to a life much analyzed, but lived with little rancor.
like the scribes of ancient Rome my fingertips are worn
yet I persist with joyous bliss for I know I must go on.
My form has bent, bowed and curled to meet the need of the word
God forbid, I went through this lifetime never being heard.
It was this world’s most popular word people use for a fancy trip they take “Travel”
My definition was a mile’s journey taken from one place to another in life
I moved from painful events as I transitioned into all sorts of places
My happy ones filled with flowers
My sad ones filled with anxiety and depression making this journey all worth it like four seasons as each one has its beautiful definition
I used the travel word as I verbally went through counselling to align my soul with my body, mind and spirit and crossed over the road less travelled
Many people travel using different travel mediums such as cars, busses, planes, boats and the likes
With me, it is always different and blossoming
Nothing like what others use to be transported to their destinations
With me, my travels are always my life experiences
I had variations without even thinking about my own moods, but as a writer
I needed to know just when to double my final consonant and when I should not
I deviated from my practice only when I used this word “Travel” no matter my stress pattern as my final consonant doubled
With this word came determining factors of places, memories and friends I made along this journey

OUT FROM THE HEAVENS
Came this dazzling beautiful Gem, hurtling towards me
tail aglow, streaking across the darkened sky,
bearing an energy that lit up all I could ever want to see.
Her radiance so pure, this I saw in her eye
as a desire rose up in this hardened heart, wanting to be,
with her, to know her, to feel her and fly.
Her soft Soul, and Her warm Spirit, put reason
into the decay of this Winter's season.
Her, wonderful heart lit up the darkness,
reshaped, for me, my universe
as I watched Her, dance with the stars,
dance with the Sun, Venus, Jupiter and Mars.
The energy She, exuded was reason to dance through all eternity
as I felt all around me shrivel, turn away, show modesty.
The full Moon's glow paled in comparison to Her beauty.
In fact, as a matter of fact, Lady Moon, turns her back on man
when ever this beautiful Gem, appeared on Her, beams of light,
brightening up the gloomy hours of this One's, long, alone night.
This cosmic Gem, radiated such warmth, gave reason, gave life,
created a joy, made it a delight to walk in Winter's, decay, rife
with unknowns, uncertainties and very little time
to sit down, compose for Her, the perfect rhyme
that could show Her, the rhythms this Solar Wind, plays
upon the shades of this Universe's, dance on rays.
Rays, waves of light from the sun, the planets, the stars
lighting up a beautiful dance I thought could have been ours
If this old Soul, - blinded - thought, would have known
all that this brilliant Gem, offered, She, had shown.
The facets of this lovely Gem, are like a flake of Snow.
In the cold darkness of my life, I came to know
With the heat of my passion, the dawning of Another,- day
the warmth of a son, has come and melted you away.
I look upon the surface of our time and see only a water mark,
an impression of the Gem, the flake of Snow, is but a stark
reminder of the Beauty, I once touched, songs from this Lark, -
so exquisite, so angelic - I once floated among, now in the dark.

Someone saw me crying the other day
They didn't know me but asked if I was okay
I sniffled and said someone I know is dying
It's not perfectly true so I feel bad for lying
It's not an old family member or a friend of mine
But it's the me I used to know that's dying
I can't get out of bed anymore
I'm trapped in a room, eyes are the door
I can't escape the room that is my mind
The monsters whispers the only thing I can find
I'm a ghost again in my life
I was hallowed out and given the knife
I can't be trusted with this device
I hurt everyone, even myself I slice
Even when I don't intend to
I try to spare them from the pain, I swear I do
I push them away
Further and further each day
But then I die more and more
As I become but a shell of what I used to adore
Is this affliction terminal now?
Is this the cheery girl's final bow?
There are tears of some old memories
But joyful ones abound
Friends that shared my life awhile
I wish were still around
The sunshine slating on the field
Chewing on blades of grass
The unique sense of humor
That caused hilarious laughs
Bracelet strings a wish or prayer
Tied in every knot
Unanswered though those wishes
Treasured friendships never forgot
An old guitar, a favorite star
Best friends no matter where they are
Tucked in my heart forever, ever
Memories that perish never
As I remember, A whispered prayer
Of light, I leave on heaven's stair
My spoken prayers to God, the King
Where joyful angels fly and sing
Prayers for friends of yesterday
I cherish still in memory
Within my heart to stay
I’ve ever minded to live or to die,
Always striving life and eluding death;
There’s no end to live or be dead.
All it takes there’s to celebrate,
But my life is not a celebration;
There must be wastrel for a celebrity.
I note a void of failure and success,
Yet have failed attempting to succeed;
For in failure lies the aura of success.
I vie life with poverty and riches;
Whereof is contentment, be poor or rich?
But the depth of heart than be poor or rich.
I ‘void sadness and sought to be happy,
And sadly tire of the bid to live happily;
How sad is the path of happiness.
I ponder ‘times being baddy and goody
Struggling ‘tween badness and goodness;
But there must be bad for triumph of good
All my life I wait on seasons and times,
Plan and live as warrant the seasons and time;
As though there’s an end to seasons or time.
It’s a cuppa made for me in the morning
Our first cuddle of the day
Him just knowing what I like
His insight with my funny, strange ways
It’s the thoughtful things he does for me
The kindness and patience he shows
Understanding and accepting everything about me
That nobody else knows…
It’s the feeling inside he gives me
It’s being my best mate
The care and thoughtfulness he has for me
When I’m sick or not feeling great
It’s the laughter and humour
He brings to my life every day
The way he makes my heart happy
The sweet things to me he’ll say!
It’s the love and loyalty he has for me
Of a unified lifetime spent together
The history and memories we’ve made and share
It’s knowing he is forever…
I come from a family of teachers. Teaching is in my blood, and it defines who I am.
Currently I’m teaching a university course entitled, “Writing Arguments.” My students had to send me an email stating what controversial issue they wanted to write an argumentative essay on. I was touched to the core to receive this letter from one of my students who has very strong views on certain issues. Here is what he wrote:
“I'd also like to tell my favorite teacher/queen/poetry goddess/ gorgeous and smart/educator/mentor that she is the best professor I've ever had. She's unique and talented and has good taste in everything. She's cute and has a very good sense of judgment...On behalf of all the class I'd like to thank you for showing us mercy and making English way more fun than it's supposed to be…”
How could he know the impact of these words on my heart? My response?
“First of all, let me assure you that your letter will be cherished and treasured. I will keep it for when I'm feeling down and am without hope. Thank you for your sweet and kind sentiments. I only correct you because I do not wish for you to suffer out there in the REAL world!” ;)
To be a mentor is a wonderful thing. Often students will come to my office to share their problems with me and to get a nice motherly hug. To be considered a good teacher is a blessing. Students prefer to take courses with me than with others. They even blow me kisses as they walk passed my classes. To be honest, my student's note made me feel like I'm making a difference, but also, he made me feel like a beautiful person both on the inside and on the outside. The icing on the cake was to be given the title, Poetry Goddess. Who could ask for more?!
Hope you enjoyed this little glimpse into my life from the perspective of someone who actually "sees" me! The pleasures of being a teacher!
Drops of water
Drip from the darkened clouds
Drops of water
Aiming to cleanse the world of its sins
Drops of water, drops so refreshing
So calming, so rejuvenating
Why, wish I they could cleanse my soul,
My memories, erase from my mind those clinging shadows
Those which got rooted in my life when
I was yet a freshly bloomed rose
When I let that which is known as love tear me up
Drops of water, running down my face
Causing me to almost taste those tears I've shed
Bringing me to remember how desperate was I for that love
Reminding how brave I could be as well
For after having shed bloody tears
After having lost my own dignity
Why, after having lost love
I did learn to be strong again
Dripping drops of water shall be naught
After the sun shall show its warmth
Once more
Drops of water, drops of water
Calming, soothing, freezing yes, but
Cleansing the whole world of its yesterday's sins!
Drops of water, having the ability to change the surroundings
Drops of water, giving life to seeds
Giving strength to dry soil
Giving fragrance to blossomed flowers
Giving life to Earth
Drops of water
Giving me inner confidence
Drops of water
All over my shaking body
Drops of water
Covering me up, closing on over me
Drops of water
Imbibing in me, the wisdom of life's meaning!
