Premium Member BEFORE THE WAR

There are countless reasons to end a war…before that war’s begun…
If you’ll permit me this moment…I’d like to add another one:

Everyone has a story we add a page to every day…
Some of the chapters in my dad’s story were too difficult for him to talk about
so he filed them all away.

Chapters, I imagine, so painful his heart must have decreed
the words written on their pages were for only him to read.

He never spoke of his time in war…he was a soldier in World War II.
He never spoke of the Holocaust…or growing up a Jew.

Dad talked freely about other pages in his story…
but these chapters he kept us from.
Vital chapter in understanding the man he would become.

Mom said Dad didn’t like to talk about those horrible terrible years…
What it was like to kill an person (the enemy) he didn’t know…
how he lost the hearing in one ear.

I don’t think Dad ever realized the price we all would pay…
How much his missing chapters would cost….
How, when he closed certain chapters of his life…other chapters were lost.

When we asked Mom why Dad was always silent, grumpy
and why he wasn’t very much fun…
Mom would nod her head, sigh then tell us how war changes everyone.

She’d say, “I wish you would have known your dad before the war and killing came…
because,” she said, “ever since the war…he’s never been the same.”

And herein lies that other reason I wish wars would stop forevermore:
All the children who never had the chance to know who their parents were
before the war.

Premium Member A Man Apart

One wonders, searching concept to reality; urge to desired dreams of paradise
Is man apart his own journey one runs, clarity of knowledge laid claim to evolution
Desires for peace meet by war fronts, innocent die like guilty evil predator walks
Amongst our soul just as life's breath

What is a man that he kill all light but darkness reigns death and destruction
World without love is a heart's tears, fallen to pains misery feeding our depths
Do we better journey which lie ahead, portrait of water color washable in mist
Lost being, like fog covered waters, rough sea devouring every gulp breathe
Is survival worldly or demise we fight in disarray

What is it we thrive that is not life, other than ourselves important priorities conclude
Achievable means to control uncivil hatred persistence
Among my being a flaw in design to beauty, chance find heart, a man apart from the rest
I also find peace, my last words laid to rest, untamed spirit; in search of Godly world

Premium Member Six Eyes Sparkle - List

The wonderful story of life begins. And then came Calum... Is there any greater joy in life other than creating a new heartbeat. This is how my new grandson came to be.

Four eyes sparkle
Two smiles appear
One conversation strikes
A first date is set
Another follows
Six months later...still dating
Happy one year anniversary
Happy two year...
Happy five year
Finally...he kneels
She accepts
One year later...
The rice is thrown
A wonderful honeymoon
One year passes
Two years pass
Uh oh...
Cramps!
Nine months pass
Boom!
Six eyes sparkle

(Dedicated to Calum)

Premium Member My Favourite Things To Do

Being a lover of poetry so much
but good to make time for other things
variety they say is the spice of life
enjoy real satisfaction for what it brings

I've always been a great lover of books
so I still love a really good read
whether history, bio or Christian thought
obviously, poetry inspires me up to speed

Walking is something I love to do
especially among nature colours so clear
among the woods branches and twigs
has such effect to inspire all that's near

Music has always been a love of mine
tastes have changed over the years
at one time in my 20s, punk was my thing
now latterly classical soothes all my fears

In all of this, I've enjoyed variety
brings joy to my life fort each day
so good being alive whatever our years
enjoying these pastimes hoping to stay

(This is a piece to describe what hobbies/pastimes fill my life other than poetry.)

Premium Member Alone, At Last

Collaboration with Marcello Eans

I’ve spent my entire life surrounded by others
That don’t seem to know what it means to love.
In the relationships I’ve had, I’ve always felt smothered.
All I’ve ever wanted was a little help from above.

So, here I am now, getting down on my knees,
Praying to a God that I hope really does exist.
I’ve done nothing in my life other than try to please.
Why won’t you answer me? Don’t keep me in the dark like this.

Are there rewards for the deeds done from my heart
In the midst of savages tearing my character apart?
To love those who hate me, forgive and forget.
In the beginning, this can’t be the plan that was meant.

I want to give up daily and call it quits,
But my life is a best seller and can’t end like this.
I’ll run this race to win and endure what I must.
Sometimes I don’t show it, but it’s you that I trust.

Premium Member Party Animal In the Form of a She

She was the best of us.
She was gloriously fun and exciting.
She laughed like no other, throwing back her head, full mouth open.
She was outgoing, completely her own person, and outrageous.
We adored her.

She grew up a few years.
Began dating three men at a time.
Engaged to one man, married to another.
She was living a life other women did not dare dream of in the 70’s.

She was a party animal before society knew women could be.
She came up missing in February.
Her car was missing too, a beautiful, two-toned sports car.
All the contents of the car were missing too, and there were a lot of them.

She was moving to another region at the time. She had partied with friends.
The next morning she was taking the loaded car and her children
To move away from their daddy and all of his clan.
People who had been there for her children when she wasn’t.

The Highway Patrol put out bulletins.
People searched for months.
She never showed up, neither did the car.
The 70’s was not ready for a party animal in the form of a she.
It is a different time now.
I wonder if she would have made it if it happened today instead of 1979?

Premium Member An Algebra Poem

Every now and then I am asked to write a poem…an honor for which I feel blessed…
but yesterday, in all honesty, I received a very strange request.

I recently wrote a poem on how basic math relates to life…which must have left one reader in awe…because he asked me if I could do the same with…wait for it…Algebra.

Apparently he has grandchildren who need a little persuasion…as to why they need to study symbols and equations.

First of all…Algebra can be funny…it’s not all boring numbers, symbols and graphs…Here’s a joke that to this day…makes algebraic mathematicians laugh:

To answer the who, what, where and when in life other mathematical processes apply…but Algebra is the only one where you can find an answer for Y.

I know studying letters and symbols can be a source of agitation…but did you know we use Algebra every time we make a calculation?

As a child when you saw a toy across the room or even those candles on the birthday cake you were blowing…you were calculating distances, using Algebra…yes, without even knowing!

In sports any time you throw or catch or kick a ball…or when you’re older…determining the spread…all these moments you are instinctively doing Algebra in your head.

At thanksgiving as you cook your turkey…Algebra is there to please…it helps you calculate how long it takes to cook a 20 pound turkey…at 350 degrees.

Without algebra we wouldn’t have TV, or video games and over us a decision would loom…when we’re redecorating and trying to determine the area of a room.

Or how much grass we need to landscape our lawn…and we’d be considered a fool…if our calculations were incorrect and our back yard was too small for our pool.

Algebra helps us determine a healthy diet…more vegetables…less fries…
and given our height, weight and body mass…the best form of exercise.

It’s true we have Google, Alexa and Siri now…all products of Algebraic conception…but what are you going to do when the electricity goes out…and you no longer have reception?

So please go to Algebra class…do your best…you don’t have to be a whiz kid…
Because when you’re older looking at that 20 pound turkey…and Alexa has no answer…You’ll be glad you did.
