All who have no faith in time
live at peace in a timeless mousehole
a hole in the fabric of nothing at all,
where a moment is but a whisker
that twitches infinity.
Danny boy
walked boldly out of O'Reilly's Irish pub
right into a catastrophic gap in reality,
immediately he was drunk on his own legend
knees buckled, his head lolled.
Back in some fictional homeland
his mother sang like a bird in a kitchen
while she stirred a dark mouse stew,
Danny's eyes flowed over
with all the milky dreams of the unborn.
The cosmic joke is endlessly amusing.
It is not a matrix nor a malignant mystery,
it is the love of the undying,
the faith of all those that have lost all faith
it is the tall stories we tell ourselves
that make even shameless death shudder.
The mouse squeaks
and yet another tale
falls through a torn pocket
to be heard as birdsong
by a perfectly conscious
oblivion.
This is presented in a series of three sonnets in a collaboration
between Daniel Turner and Lin Lane.
They are based on the original sonnet of Daniel's "Night Angel."
Thank you, Danny, for the inspiration and for allowing me to
give poetic voice to your Night Angel.
In deep slumber madness, she comforts me
Appearing, unencumbered, from the mist
Subconscious suspension our nightly tryst
Erasing my mind of bad memories
She mends and warms my soul so tenderly
Imbibing my thoughts and heart with her kiss
Lovingly fulfills a long ago wish
Thankfully restoring my sanity
Regularly she visits in silence
Enlightening my dreams with wholesomeness
Wiping my tears of angered betrayal
Exchanging her love for malevolence
I awaken with renewed happiness
Refreshed from the angelic portrayal
**********
Rest easy, dear one. Night Angel is here
To ease the worry from your furrowed brow
Kiss to the cheek, I lay upon you now
In your sweetest dream you will feel me near
Memories of your past no longer live
No need for tears to fall from pain or stress
Tender love I offer in my caress
Gift of my thoughts to you this night I give
Wake on the morrow, glad to greet the sun
Knowing night has me coming through the mist
To comfort once more when your cheek is kissed
As Night Angel hovers o're her loved one
Though I must wait till night sends its moonbeams
I shall never leave you lost in your dreams
**********
Undeserving am I, for such mercy
A sinner and tormented vagabond
Cavorting with strumpets in Babylon
Rendering my soul hungry and thirsty
Yet nightly, through the mist you come tersely
Descending with your kindness from beyond
Blessed with your kiss my memories abscond
Overfilling my heart with love firstly
Night Angel, I have prayed for forgiveness
From the midst of my dreams, am again whole
By the magnificence of your meekness
My conscience is now bending from stiffness
The morning sun brings new light to my soul
Now no longer will ever go sleepless

I remember as a little girl when John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
Everyone cried, everyone gathered around the TV set waiting for word.
We sang the “Star Spangled Banner,” “God Bless America,” and “Oh Danny Boy,”
(Because, as my Grandfather explained it, the Irish and Americans were united today.)
And my Uncle Ryan and my Grandfather William even wore their uniforms saluting the set.
My Grandfather Luigi said that that was the beauty of this country, a melting pot.
When I looked confused, he explained we were like Grandma Sophia’s Spaghetti dinner:
The sauce was our soldiers, fighting and spilling blood for our freedom,
The pasta were the families at home, providing a framework for the sauce.
The spices were the people of many countries who seek freedom here,
And my grandmother represented the wisdom of our forefathers in combining it all to make something good become great!
To this day I can’t see the flag without shedding a small tear for family I’ve lost, like those old soldiers saluting the TV;
And traditions we’ve lost, like singing patriotic songs together;
But most of all I can’t help but crave my grandma’s melting pot spaghetti!
Danny down the hall
just behind the door.
Thunder coming from it.
Presence made galore.
Cozy with a two-four.
Danny home to drink.
Left upon his own.
A girl to make him think.
T-shirt with a logo.
Danny's casual dress.
Smell of smoke right through it.
His ball cap holding mess.
Shoes left in the hallway
leaning to the wall.
Just aside the pathway
where Danny sweeps the hall.
Sunshine from the window
Danny stands in view.
Watching those who enter
whenever one comes through.
Danny down the hallway.
Asking what is new.
Pray it's not a foul mood
or Danny's on the brew.
He enters the neighborhood bitter
from cold cases old grudges and gripes
his musty breath is shallow stone cold
coming from his angry nostrils transferred
yet again for bad behavior after sucking
the life out of another non suspecting poor
individual while suspended to the desk duties
for a few months he lay in waiting creating slander
perpetrating falsehoods for the weak the helpless
the vulnerable homeless the disabled the injured
veterans families down on their luck he's mastered
the boroughs villages canals valley's street corners
and hills throughout the city children run from his
thumping hoofs craving blood sweat and tears
of urban survivors holding on by mere threads
praying for spiritual guidance redemption from
this evil hoping for strong minded individuals
to somehow provide ethical support leadership
crumbles rams locking horns while performing their
civic duties of washing the scum off the streets
when instead Mr excessive force organized brutality
home invasions intimidation fear corruption
abuse of power rises about the small towns
of little people whose cries are never heard
until a sudden riot approaching engulfing a city
the watchers always look on in disbelief as the flames
crawl block for block windows smashed glass shatters
into a million pieces reflecting the eyes of despair
graffiti begins to cover store fronts meanwhile
friendly fire explodes sifting through reasoning
remorse the crying kind Danny boy oh boy oh boy
a quiet calm cease to behold a sullen peace
the trying time beckoning the emptiest eyes
malice unfolds first responders are grieving
as Mr excessive force is now leaving
In dribs and drabs, in fits and starts,
the elders slowly congregate;
in the common room of the seniors' home,
they patiently sit and wait.
Some are wheeled in, some simply shuffle
in orderly fashion, without kerfuffle.
They've all been told
there's "gonna be a show"
put off by some "young people"
who (chances are) they don't know.
Many are quite alert and very aware
delighted to be together
and to have an experience to share.
Others come in a different mental state,
in their own little worlds,
seemingly uncerebral
yet dignified, quiet, sedate.
The entertainers have already arrived, in fact,
and as soon as the seniors come in
they start to interact,
exchanging pleasantries with hellos,
how-do-you-dos and "what're-ya-ats!";
smiles and handshakes easily given
with banter and casual chit-chat.
The nurses and attendants smile,
noting the connectivity,
and across the room faces brighten
at the growing sense of fun and festivity.
A happy mood pervades the place
as the singers smile and sing;
their voices effortlessly fill the air,
easy, relaxed, warm, soothing.
Lots of "old" songs are played and sung:
"Country Roads", "Danny Boy",
"Kiss an Angel Good Morning".
"If you know the words, please sing along!"
and so many of them do, with voices soft or strong.
But what sets this show apart
is the interaction
between singers and seniors;
their reaction and sense of satisfaction
of a diversion from the mundane,
a vivid and vibrant distraction.
And those with minds in altered states
are aroused from their lethargy,
hearing the music and sensing joy,
perhaps remembering when they felt such ecstasy.
Often, the singers will reach out to touch and hold a hand.
Elderly eyes light up and smiles show they understand.
A few of the more able-bodied are invited to dance,
a reminder of the long-ago days of youth and romance.
After an hour or so, the concert reaches its conclusion
with applause and cheers, compliments said in profusion.
The Sunshine Singers are pleased with a job well done.
The seniors and staff feel delight and satisfaction;
and everyone is enveloped in a warm glow:
the simple joy that comes from human connection.
