My Job At Call Scotland

The teachers and staff at the special school, Graysmill,
Did what they could to give the severes a life afterwards,
And they presumed I would be accepted to work,
At the CALL Centre of Edinburgh University, for a long time to lurk.

It’s now CALL Scotland, and researches special tech,
Develops assistive software, devices, and communication aids;
It digitalise written exams energetically and with voice,
For disabled kids who need to have their own writing choice.

But I went to Daniel Stewarts nursery, was well accepted, superior,
As I came top of the class for both words and numbers,
And as it is a top private school near Edinburgh’s city centre,
I found the sympathy hard at Graysmill ‘cos I was not inferior.

In the 70s and 80s they thought the special pupils couldn’t interact,
In mainstream schools where the able-bodied were understood;
Most of my friends had a dislike of normal, ordinary kids,
And didn’t understand my perceptions of relationality and brotherhood.

So as it was sometimes an effort for me to be part of the school,
And I just wanted to walk away from all things disabled or impaired,
The moment I started university where opportunity beckoned,
Where my intentions and abilities could be so aired.

I wanted to maybe be a software engineer for organisations,
But knew I couldn’t type all day every day with my foot,
So after uni got a part-time job at the CALL Centre, but felt self-defeated,
‘Cos I'd had blows with my parents about my own mechanism of input.

I did home computing growing up using my hands on the keyboard,
But did my school and homework with my foot, not good,
And since they wanted me to go to university, no big deal,
They forced me to keep using the faster mechanism, the switch for my foot.

So I resented the CALL Centre right throughout my young years,
For not believing or ingratiating me when I told them of my hand dexterity,
And as a graduate able to deliberate upon my case of disrespect,
I can say that my parents should have certainly been certified for neglect.

I did not renew my contract with the Call, was only for four months,
As I didn’t want to put myself through that close contact and innocence assumption,
But think that they do an note-worthy job for severely disabled kids,
And that my case was an exception to their loving, kind gumption.

Theme for collaboration suggested by Tim Smith

Two enormous old toads crossed the road
On Tom’s back lounged Thomasina toad
Both are ugly and warty
Thomasina’s so naughty
As her bowels on his back she’d download

06-16-17

WRITTEN BY JAN ALLISON

When Thomasina toad dumped on old Tom
He thought her poop explosion was a bomb
He hopped in the air
gave her a mean stare
shouting, "I'm not taking you home to Mom!"

WRITTEN BY LIN LANE

Ribbit rubbit robbit 'n ro
this crazy toad has got to go
She's turning quite mean -
Fifty shades of green
No time to chat but still does crow

WRITTEN BY TIM SMITH

"Why don't we do it in the road?"
Said Thomas, the old horny toad
Thomasina hissed,
"Get a load of this!"
and a "blessing" on him bestowed

WRITTEN BY LIM'RIK FLATS

Thomasina was on a road trip
Her taxi was Tom's back she'd grip
But she strained as she held
And her bottom expelled
So she said "I've just left you a tip"

WRITTEN BY RAY GRIDLEY

Tom and Thomasina were the perfect pair
They were ancient toads without a care
He had a huge wart
She gives a mean fart
Anyone in her vicinity better beware!

WRITTEN BY ALEXIS Y

Now Tom was an over achiever
He wanted the lady, not leave her
He sprayed his back with Scotch-Guard
and rubbed down with lots of lard
the dumper was now the receiver

WRITTEN BY DALE GREGORY COZART

Tom gave Thomasina the boot
Got sick from the smell of her poot
told her to get lost
right after he tossed
She gave him the one finger salute

WRITTEN BY DANIEL TURNER

Thomas and Thomasina loved to hear
the waterboatmen rubbing their gear
Thomas tried and started to croak
causing Thomasina to choke
you two will never get it right I fear

WRITTEN BY SEREN ROBERTS

When T'sina hopped on for a ride
Old Thomas reminded his bride,
"Though you're my sweet dish,
on the road we'll get squished",
"Just do it!" was her terse reply.

WRITTEN BY CRAIG CORNISH

Thomasina and Tom a heavy load
Lingered a little too long on the road
He could have kissed her all night
shocked at the oncoming lights
Croak and ribbit was heard; two flattened toads

I'm a firm believer
In limerick fever
(This isn't news)
"It'll cure the blues!"
Says Jan (who is no deceiver)

Written by Jan Allison:

Writing limericks is a fine art
Yes I write about poop or a fart
But show me someone
Whose not dropped a ‘bomb’
then from poetry soup I’d depart!

Written by Lim'rik Flats:

Does art mimic life or life mimic art?
Don't ask me, I'm not too smart.
It seems the soup
Has the same poop
As watching the news (or a fart).

Drama and trauma, factions and foes,
Smiting and fighting, (hard on the nose),
Saves me the trouble
Of viewing double
Saves time, and less grief I suppose.

Written by Ray Gridley:

Raise a toast to this collaboration
Whatever your race or your nation
Just write on a whim
Lim'rick Flat's bound to grin
They are all going to be a sensation!

Written by Daniel Turner:

I know a guy called Lim'rick Flats
Writes limericks at the drop of a hat
Jan is his pal
She's quite a gal
They met in a laundry mat

Jan makes jokes about poop
he puts them in alphabet soop
drinks from the bowl
with no self control
which makes him a nincompoop

Also written by Daniel Turner:

Write all the limericks you want
but don't fart in a restaurant
people will laugh
call you riffraff
even if you're a debutante

Written by John Lawless:

oh the limerick it ain’t quite a sonnet
and the learned, they look down upon it
for they cannot grasp
its head or its ass
nor the cleansing effect of its tonic

Written by Terry Reeves:

Late for work she flew out the door
Took an express elevator to the 29th floor
Let some discreet killer farts
Nearly stopped all their hearts
Left them gagging; she'd evened the score

Written by Tim Smith:

Nonsense is here found out in the alley
Five funny lines we'll add to the tally
a smile or two
we laught till we're blue
so put out your best and join in our rally

Written by Alexis Y:

Hey what's going on in the soup?
Lim'rik Flats I want the scoop
What do you have to say?
You got poem of the day
Congrats, I shouldn't have flown the coop

Written by Jean Murray:

John is always fun.
His poems and their puns.
If you need a lift.
He has the gift.
Lim'rik Flats is number one.

psst. How could I not add this to the string? ~ john

BEAUTIFUL BEACHES, A Letter to Daniel
By Curtis Johnson

Hi Daniel,

There once was a man living high on a mountain whose name was Harry
Mt. St. Helen was threatening to blow its top, and everyone started to worry
Harry had been there 60 years and thought he would live on to tell his story
So after being warned to evacuate, Harry refused and decided to tarry
Sadly, when the volcano blew, Harry was later found in 40 feet of ashes

It’s interesting at times, that life can be so tame, so sweet, and so calming. Because of our positive experiences, we relax and enjoy seasons so charming Like Harry, we are unconvinced of danger, and need not fear rumors and warnings

Sandy beaches on the oceanfront are beautiful and lots of fun, when all is sunny and bright. For eight years my family and I lived in San Francisco within four blocks of the Pacific. Believe me when I say that the Oceanside is a calming and charming place. We spent lots of time in the Golden Gate Park and on the beach.

One Sunday afternoon, my two small kids and I took a walk across the rocks above the ocean beach. The waves were coming in pretty far, but I thought that we were high enough. I thought wrong. We had not been on the rocks 5 minutes before the waters came splashing against the rocks that we were walking on. I held the kids and protected them from the big splash. I got pretty wet, but no harm was done, and the lesson was well received.

The sandy beaches of life will often suddenly turn into rushing waves of sea salty waters. My friend, there are times when the volcanoes of life will heat up and blow their top. When they do, we best be aware, heed the warnings, and seek higher ground.

Dan, I do not know what you may be going through presently, but I am praying for you. If for any reason you taste those salty waters of what was once a calm and sandy beach, I have every reason to believe that God is going to change things for you. If the volcanoes of your life have blown its top, I have every reason to believe that the ashes will not bury you. When the troublesome adversities of life blow against all of us, God is always both warning and leading us out to safety.

So Daniel, my friend, may we together seek higher ground. Love you. Curtis09262013

At conception, the point of his earthly beginning inside his mother's womb, there was a light, the likes of which he had not seen until now at the point of his death. He shared with me that he had lived 85 years on earth until his demise two months ago. As he thought upon the light, he remembered that the light was not as bright as the light at his conception. That is to say, he believes when he really dies, there will be an identical light like the one he saw when he was being conceived.

I was privileged to listen and record his most remarkable story of how he died, went to heaven, and returned to tell his story. His sojourn there was a total of some 60 seconds. But if a thousand years is one day*, we are talking a heavenly timeframe of far more than 60 seconds. A brief estimate and some calculations explain why he tells me that he was in heaven long enough to visit a number of deceased loved ones, friends, and Biblical characters. For example, he met the young boy who provided the bread and fish Jesus used to feed 5,000 people. He had always been overwhelmed with the unselfishness displayed by the young lad and his willingness to be a tool for Christ in the performance of one of the world's greatest miracles. The lad never sought recognition.

He told me about a grandfather from four generations back whose name his family was never able to produce. He had suspected it to be a Bible name because his great grandfather's name was Daniel. He was right because he met him in heaven, and his name was Jeremiah. He was so happy as he told me about the family members he met. There were so many people to meet and so much beauty surrounding the entire scenery. He wanted to stay, but the angel informed him that God simply wanted to give him a taste of his future. For now, it was not his time, because his earthly mission and purpose were not completed.

So now, at 85, he's anticipating that exit light which will be there in all its splendor at his demise, he is content to live until his mission is completed.

Two Men-Two Goodbyes (Part 2)

If you saw beams gleaming
On Peavine Mountain last night
It was me, between two men I love
Having them both in sight

I haven't been on this mountain
For many years you see
But through all my desperation
I know I must face reality

True love is everywhere
For my friends spirit has been set free
We never judged each other
Although, sometimes mocked stupidity

Over at the edge I looked down
At who I thought I loved me
My ex and my children
But for him, there's only history

I looked up to the heavens
As I pray on my knees
"Who can I share my secrets with now
The man below, no future he sees"!

A waterfall of tears began
Living became a meditative state
For hours I cried and screamed
For the loss of loving too late

I awake in the fetal position
Eyes swollen like never before
I'm warm and cold at the same time
Body, stiff and sore

I cannot see the man below
My vision highly impaired
Darkness still looms
Lonely, hopeless, and scared

Then I remembered
What my friend always said,
"True love will never hurt you
Until that person is dead"

I didn't listen as usual
Now that he's gone, I understand
Looking down from Peavine Mountain to the other
I give my goodbye only written in the sand

"Please watch over them
For I too, have dreams."
I made a wrong turn in life
I now know what love mirage means.

I put my hand high up to him
Hoping to feel his touch
I gaze my eyes below to the other
Knowing, now, his love isn't much

My waterfall of tears
Turns to a tiny creek
"Goodbye to you both,
I have a new life to seek"

As I drive down the dirt road
A huge gust comes from the west
Pushing my truck to the man below
I'm sure it's a test!

I stop for a moment
Eyes piercing through swollen blur
Trying to hold back driving to him
He just wants what we were

As a cloud covered the sun
To ease the pain to my eyes
I knew my friend was testing me
Seeing if I'd fall for the others lies

Since the man at the base of the mountain
Cannot communicate as well
We will never know the truth
And tales we will tell

Protecting my vision
All the way to my front door
I blow a kiss into the wind
"I love you so much more"

Oh gosh, another tragedy.
The news of Libya
Shatters the world.
Storm Daniel brings down
The first dam wall.
Water hurtles
Towards the second dam wall,
Breaching it from the
Pressure, it breaks and falls,
Flooding the river which broke
Its banks and swept in a
Devil like, sweeping, horrific
Water mass into the
Town of Derma.
A nightmare of a situation,
Which broke all communication,
As bridges washed away,
Electricity no more,
Destroyed by the angry
Torrent, consuming everything
And everyone in its path,
With a determined wrath.
Eventually flowing into the sea,
Which in turn spewed
Out bodies rapidly,
And relentlessly.

What a terrifying night
As people died,
Leaving behind their loved
Ones to grieve, if they could
Find, or identify the bodies.
The town was leveled
To the ground, and
As Storm Daniel ceased
Its roaring
And drowning,
The living wailed,
And cried
And screamed,
Living each moment again,
Such sorrow.
Dear God, give them strength
To face the morrow.
They search for a sign of life,
A husband lost his children, his wife.

The red cross came,
Doctors, medicine, and nurses,
Volunteers tying to grapple,
And cope with this tragedy,
They climbed and scrambled
Over debris and mangled,
Bodies, Muddy water,
Cars that were smashed,
Homes that water swept
Through that were bashed,
By an enormous giant like monster,
A furious force of uncontrollable
Charging water.
The helpless prayed
Lifting their arms up high,
Towards the heavens
In the sky,
It was not their time to die,
Yet some hoped they had,
As the pain of knowing,
Their loved ones had
Suffered and now dead,
Would be a lasting dread.

People by the thousands
Became homeless, the
The number of the dead,
In the town of Derma
Was Unfathomable,
And Unimaginable.
They wandered aimlessly, in a daze.
Could they come to terms
With what had happened.
The survivor’s strength,
Would come only as they
Rallied together.
You must do that dear friends,
Rather sooner than later.
God bless you all, the world
Grieves with you,
You are incredibly brave,
Let all your good memories
Surround you now and forever,
And see you through
This horrible reality, a nightmare,
Think of the good times
Your heart and mind will remember,
And will slowly and slightly repair.

Holy Passion

ALERT: A carpenter's son is loose in the Temple
Birds flutter, animals hustle, merchants scream.
The zeal for Jesus' Father's house consumes Him
As the place for foreigners to pray had become a zoo.

ALERT: A prophet is setting up for a Baal battle.
Baal's priests even cut themselves yet no fire.
After taunting, Elijah fills his altar with water.
Calling on God, fire consumes and people bow.

ALERT: An old man is building a huge boat ship.
Without a cloud in the sky and only son's to help.
When finished the animals come on call to board.
Rain starts, doors close – 8 saved by holy passion.

ALERT: Jesus is telling a tax collector he'll join him for dinner.
Heedless of the Pharisees despising and the crowd's surprise.
Zacchaeus totally changes – offering to multiply stolen money.
A single sinner saved multiplies even more this holy passion.

ALERT: Peter plus are preaching in the Temple again.
After being imprisoned for just that, now rearrested.
Whipped by the authorities, the disciples rejoice -
For they've been counted worthy to suffer with Christ.

ALERT: Daniel's praying openly even after it's become illegal.
The royal advisers gleefully have the king throw him to the lions.
Strangely they don't seem hungry till after Daniel is pulled out.
So the king openly praises Daniel's God for this amazing miracle.

DOUBLE ALERT: Jesus is talking to a Samaritan woman!!!!
Breaking cultural barriers to share the message of salvation
To her who has been married 5 times and is living with the 6th.
She believes he's the Messiah and brings the town to Christ!

ALERT: Paul's going back into the same town that stoned him.
He's preaching again after shipwreck, jail, beatings, and such.
Persecution seems to encourage Paul that he's doing the right.
Passionately following the Savior who turned Him 180 degrees.

ALERT: Bible translators burned at the stake for God's Word.
Missionaries avoid death and disease long enough to share life.
Stirring Holy Passion in receptive people who repeat the cycle.
Changing cultures in bondage into those sharing Jesus' love.

ALERT: What passion has the Lord put on your heart? Mine?
Can we pray to see His will find its way in our everyday lives
So the lost shall see, hear, find Christ and grow to share Him?
Eternity is forever, this life is not. Fill us Lord with holy passion.

A nubile young vicar named Jude
Was seen swimming, totally nude
The bishop said WOW
Just look at you now
Your assets - they need to be viewed!

Invited him home for a drink
A toast as their glasses did clink
Robes down on the floor
Performing a chore...
How far will this story now sink.

WRITTEN BY TIM SMITH

The vicar bent over to pray
The bishop could not look away
So for his protection
Took up a collection
A robe now conceals his display

WRITTEN BY CHRIS GREEN

I think this story about being nude will sink low
I will tell on those guys, all I know
Those two men are not holy
The bishop's roly-poly
And the vicar used to be in a nude girly show

WRITTEN BY LIN LANE

The bishop was feeling romantic
The vicar thought the man pedantic
When the vicar turned around
To give the bishop a frown
The bishop gasped, "Lord, you're gigantic!"

WRITTEN DALE GREGORY COZART

Said Jude, will we both go to hell-
Said bishop, you never can tell
But please will you turn
I've got carpet burn
And my knees are beginning to swell

WRITTEN BY GARY SMITH

As the bishop continued to stare
He thought such a body's not fair
To see the nude vicar
was hard on his ticker
and soon he had to change underwear

WRITTEN BY ROGER ADAMS

Mother Teresa told me so
In the heaven we’ll dance too slow
If you want to come
Bring us some Rum
Otherwise you may stop and go

WRITTEN BY PASHANG SALEHI

btw... What would the Pontiff say?
Would there be hell to pay?
Or would the Pope
just drop the soap
and hope he'd be invited to play

WRITTEN BY LIM'RIK FLATS

When suddenly a knock at the door
they decided they'd rather ignore
in walked the pope,
joined in the group grope
next day they were all saddle sore

WRITTEN BY DANIEL TURNER

The pope thought it not at all freakly
when asking the other men meekly
that if they were game
and would do the same
they could set up appointments weekly

WRITTEN BY DALE GREGORY COZART

As the bishop could obviously tell
But you might be surprised
How it grew to that size
Well, he used it to ring the church bell
