Descending on this night, a foul
darkness flows from the Reaper's cowl.
And shadows conceal the undead,
instilling the living with dread.
On Halloween, demons roam free,
while ghosts go on a haunting spree.
And ghouls claw their way out of graves
as walking dead, and zombie slaves.
As their silhouettes stalk the gloom,
black cats and witches share a broom.
And while vampires morph into bats,
Jack-o'-lanterns get gnawed by rats.
Evil's on the prowl: goblins hunt,
as werewolves howl, snarl, yelp, and grunt,
And monsters trod unhallowed ground,
where creepy crawly things abound.
On a warm, bright, sun-soaked golden dawn,
a green, slimy, crawly worm woke up,
eagerly burst out from his snug abode,
opened tiny googly eyes, mesmerized!
He didn't know where his darling mother was!
He only knew his stomach was rumbling...
feeling hungry, started to crawl lazy,
and chew on the juicy tender leaves !
This creepy, crawly, greenish…but
brainy worm managed to squish, in the
cozy backpack of a school-going child,
learning his main goal, isn't it lot of fun!
Crunch, crunch! Munch, munch! Aren't books tasty!
Inquiring worm did not hesitate,
as many yummy books he could bite,
he crammed in his belly right away!
"Whow! I feel so enlightened, not an
insignificant worm any more, my
picture should be labelled "Bookworm" Buddy
at children's favourite library door!"
"before long I will turn into
a scintillating butterfly, and
spread my wings and my newly-acquired
knowledge to this wide beautiful world!"

FIRST PLACE
Added one more stanza (Stanza 4) after the contest had been judged.
I am a real scaredy cat
and there's absolutely nothing that
I could do about that.
I'm scared of 'roaches
I'm scared of rats
I'm scared of spiders
and afraid of bats
I fear all arachnids
and I fear those gnats
Oh I fear all the kinds I find
of those creepy crawly brats!
And but what can I do about that?
Huh and who woudn't fear
a midnight rat-a-tat?
So I've resigned myself to being
a lifelong scaredy cat.
Yeah and I'm scared of heights
Scared of noises at night
Gah, I'm really quick to fright!
I'm scared of grasshoppers and even of dogs
Gosh there's hardly a thing that I ain't scared of.
But I admit I am a timid tigress
otherwise I'm a harmless human who don't hurt a fly
Normally just a normal lady, a humble poetess
I attack only when provoked to the limits
so as I'm a cat after all
I do show my tiger claws if the situation demands
or else I don't mind chickening out
of aggressive and foolhardy involvements.
And maybe if everybody was a coward like me
they wouldn't hurt each other with sheer brutality.
I guess for ladies it's not so bad to be
a bit more cowardly
In any case that's far better than being
a ruffian who's dastardly!
And oh, lastly but not the least
ah yes, I also greatly fear
any lustful male leer
I'd rather I'm invisible to their view
So I really find huge refuge
in the dear divine idea that exhorts me to
to drape and wrap myself from top to toe
in flowing garbs when I step outdoors
and that veiling attire does make me brave
as I feel vulnerable no more
and that's when I feel the transformation from lil kitty
into the big cats
from scaredy cat to formidable tigress
and that's when for once there's NOTHING I fear anymore! :)
as I go out veiled in soft armour from top to toe.
And I feel I can face the chauvinistic foe
BUTTERFLY IN TUTU
Butterfly in tutu, deliriously delusional, bright
with spangles, tapping her wings. All knew
she was cocky with glorified golden teeth.
She followed the cockamamie caterpillar
with his root-tootie-toot-toot flute. Thoughts
of mopping up this contest after that
creepy-crawly performance. Her tutu, in
and out, in and out. Her wings of grace
up and down, up and down impeccable.
but the Operettes were up next - they were stars!
Dusk dimmed butterfly’s oscaring, dark
and darker, the glare of stars fell. The iridescent
tutu turned black, she stubbed her wings,
she spun out and crashed, and the audience
laughed……………………instead of hiding
she took a bow

Glints flashing, gloss on dew washed dawns
as sun dances in glowing flames
soft flow of light like graceful swans
autumn mist swells, playing her games
as sun dances in glowing flames
kindness prepares the voice of grace
autumn mist swells, playing her games
easing heartbreak time can’t erase
kindness prepares the voice of grace
secret faith mends melancholy
easing heartbreak time can’t erase
raising moods who’re creepy-crawly
secret faith mends melancholy
autumn stirs some semblance of hope
raising moods who’re creepy-crawly
pouring out love so hearts still cope
autumn stirs some semblance of hope
psalms of praise, written by bright leaves
pouring out love so hearts still cope
consider the season who greaves
psalms of praise, written by bright leaves
soft flow of light like graceful swans
consider the season who greaves
Glints flashing, gloss on dew washed dawns
I step outside to gaze up at the sky
Day by day different clouds float by
Some puffy, some wispy, others gray or white
Some set with the sun at dusk
Others stay out the whole summer night
On my block, a remarkable variety of trees
Maples, oaks, elms, evergreens my eye sees
Some older, some younger, others sturdy or frail
Each one with a story, with his very own tale.
Beneath me are grasses, herbs, weeds, vegetation
Creepy crawly bugs and insects, marvels of creation
Indoors may well be a kingly palace of comfort and ease
My home is outdoors, midst fresh air's gentle breeze
Afraid of dying… He holds the keys to heaven
Afraid of losing – a job, a home, a heart…
Remember He is always with you, comforting,
Reassuring and reminding you of your blessings
Afraid of creepy, crawly creatures… His rest
Calms and caresses the soul who knows Him
Afraid of fire and hell – salvation lifts the heart
Afraid of the dark – remember He is the light
Brighter than the noonday sun in the heat of the day
Afraid of blindness, living in pain, being in agony…
Remember He comforts the heart in distress
And gives support in old age, to the end of the age
Afraid? – Remember He is there with you
Always kind, reassuring and edifying
Always a light to guide you through the night
Brighter than any star gleaming quietly
And stronger than any sun in hues of silent dreams
Afraid? – Listen Up! He is there, no farther away
Than a simple prayer – asking for His grace – through faith
Afraid?... He is the way!
I need to grab my bible but all I can do is stare
For it’s stood up all by itself on that shelf over there
And between me and it there is a spider on the roam
Why on Earth do spiders like it so much in my home
I have a pocket bible upstairs in my bedside drawer
But I just love the weight and feel of this one so much more
Wait, the spider’s moving on, perhaps he’s on his way
No such luck, the spider is a bible bug today
He’s now up on my bookshelf sitting in an empty space
I swear I see a smug expression on the spider’s face
If he goes left my bible he will find despite my need
If he goes right then “Spiders Of The World” is there to read
Well wouldn’t you just know it, now he’s crawling up the cover
That critter chose my bible when he could have chose the other
Well that’s me done, I’ll make do with my bible from upstairs
And Spidey can have that one while I sit and say my prayers
O here we go again, I’ll speak to God and have a grumble
Another trucker going by is causing things to rumble
But now I’m thanking God because although I nearly stumble
The spiders not a problem since my bible took a tumble
So bye bye creepy crawly thing beneath my bible flat
Your reading choice has rendered you a nasty little splat
But wait! My bible’s bobbing as it creeps all by itself
Please God, send a lightning bolt and aim it at my shelf

tiny creepy crawly
big eyed mini-creatures
who tiptoe across our
skin while we sleep are
not looking to give us
a disease or a horrid
sting or bite. So let us
not generalize our bugs
If you do not mind. Let
us not generalize our
stings or our bites either.

I’m a goofy guy and I like to eat bugs
Creepy, crawly, I think they are just so ugs
They live in corners and underneath my bed
I think they are gone but they are all up in my head
They drive me nuts and keep me up at night
I cover up because they always put up a fight
They sleep all day and come out every night
They don’t eat my food, but I still lose my appetite
The big ones are so big and nasty
When I catch them, sometimes they are so tasty
Some nights we all have ourselves a party
Wake up hung over, now they are so ugly
On the wall, just want to run, stupid little bug
Sometimes I think I just need a hug
Stupid bugs
