It Rains in Scotland

When it rains in Scotland,
It reminds me of home.
I see the scattered raindrops
making their way down the
window, if it were home, they
would graciously enter in.

When it rains in Scotland,
It takes me back to that
August afternoon 3 years back,
the raindrops danced at the tune
of love, it wasn’t home but it
felt like one.

When it rains in Scotland,
It reminds me of that cold
cold February 1436 km
between us. We usually have
distance but this time our hearts
felt apart.

When it rains in Scotland,
I find myself deep in thought,
thoughts of you, us; when we
were together. I find myself
singing about you, us; now that
we are 3200 km apart.

When it rains in Scotland,
I often go back to the time
I sat in the cafeteria, trying to
eat my feelings. I go back to
him, he sat next to me, helped
me gulp down my sorrows.

When it rains in Scotland,
I look back perturbed and
find an unrecognizable version
of my desolate self – staring in
the abyss.

When it rains in Scotland,
I am reminded that even in the
Coldest of the weather, there
Is a warm heart, beating, enduring,
Resisting; living.

Premium MemberFive Point Eight On the Richter Scale

They say there's a first time for everything
My first time ever feeling the unsettling effects of an earthquake
Albeit, it was ONLY 5.8 on the Richter Scale
It happened during our holiday in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
We were roughly 60 km from the epicentre
But still found it a little unsettling to say the least
The locals didn't even break a sweat
They experience on average 150 of them a year
However there was definitely some rocking 'n rolling going on
At first I thought it was one of those people movers going by
Transporting folks around the resort
Then realized... YIKES!
That was a FREAKING EARTHQUAKE!!!
All's well that ends well
And I'm still alive to tell my tale!
Great place to vacation but you wouldn't wanna live there!

Dad

In the depths of pain, my heart lies torn,
As if I’ve faltered, failed, and mourned.
This heavy burden holds me tight,
I cry for relief, for a ray of light.

My thoughts, they wander, back in time,
To see my dad, once strong, now past his prime.
Gray-haired, frail, and with oxygen in hand,
He stays confined, bedridden, life's demand.

His suffering, a slow and bitter blow,
I watch him fade, and tears freely flow.
My heart, in anguish, beats with sorrow,
Helplessly witnessing his tomorrows.

The image of him, once so bold,
Now suffering, as life unfolds.
A sadness grips, my heart in pain,
Through tearful eyes, I‘ll forever see his name.

I long to halt this painful tide,
To find the strength, stand tall with pride,
But the path ahead is unclear,
I'm lost, afraid, holding fear.

A Journey of Faith and Redemption By Er Haider Khan

The whistle blew, signalling the start of my journey,
Aboard the train, my degree and future bright and blurry.
3000 km to travel, 30 hours to spend,
I settled in, ready for the adventure to begin.

I put my bags down, beneath my seat,
Letting myself rest, my eyes to meet.
But fate had other plans, for I was soon awaked,
By strangers, who in my native language spoke.

They talked to me, and I was all alone,
But their kindness and warmth, I'd soon know.
They gave me sweets and showed me the way,
To pray to Allah, the only merciful, they'd say.

We prayed between the seats, cramped and tight
, But their sincerity, made everything right.
They took me in, and showed me the way,
To Allah, they led me, with love and grace.

They were like angels, sent to guide,
My heart was filled with love, my soul purified.
In that moment, I found my repentance,
Thanks to these strangers, Allah's holy message.

May we all find such moments of grace,
And be led to Allah, in this life's race.
For in the end, it's love and devotion,
That bring us true satisfaction and salvation.
There is something in my life when night comes my mind.

Premium MemberThe Missing Bride

My late cousin’s daughter was to get married
at a place some 80 km from their residence,
I was asked to drive her there and I agreed,
it was like my daughter’s wedding in a sense.

So, in the afternoon of a chilly winter day
we started, the bride occupied the backseat hot
with two other girls, I’d no idea who were they,
must be two of her best friends, I thought.

All the talking was done by her voluble friends,
the bride was quiet all through the journey,
thinking perhaps if her free life-style would end,
or she was exhausted, too tired to talk, probably.

We reached the venue late, a full half an hour,
I told them to get down quick, rush to the room,
I would join them and others after I park the car
and bring the bouquet I bought for the groom.

When I came back I heard there a big commotion,
for the bride I brought with me was missing,
I realized what had happened in second’s fraction,
went back to the car, found her on backseat sleeping.

Sensitivity

Every step she takes rocks her world.
A butterfly is a dragon.
Life is a beast that must be slain.
It rips her heart apart with its cruel fangs
Leaving a red raw wound.
The pain is so immense that she can hardly stand
Every touch is a branding.
It burns a mark on her heart that cannot be erased.
She cares too much.
She would crawl through hell
She would bang on the gates of heaven
for those she loves.
But love means pain.
Love is the brand that marks her heart.
Life shreds, love burns
but existence without them would be empty.
So the pain is a gift.

Premium MemberThe First Whistle

Puffing languidly by blowing the whistle, there came
the mementos of zig-zag meter gauged companion,
The first consignment on the railroad track, locomotives shipped from the United Kingdom,
by crossing 586 bridges, beautiful Himalayan Mountain Ranges,
37 tunnels of major attractions arrived at the destination,
A first venture, to boost up the drop's tea and coal transportation.
That day, a track known as Brahmaputra Valley,
literally airdropped as an island railway went conversion,
became history to usher the broad gauge interconnectivity of the remote region.

Eleven years later in 1892, thousands of men and women
gathered to cast the last glimpse of the railway track
at the eastern part of the Indian Continental,
to become the witness of the track's last communication.

An emotional moment, when the train ran for the last time
on the 115 year old meter gauge line
by flagging and blowing the last whistle of the dominion.
To bid tearful, joyful adieu to the first whistle
of the last morning, on the old track of the 65 km
railway line, inaugurated in 1881, in the so called
Land of the Raising Sun as commemoration!

My Love

Horizon reflects within the sea,
as you all over me.
My friends can observe you within the soul of mine,
like the celestial light of the Moon into the bosom of the earth divine.
We are far but attached together like the earth and the sky.
Though you're three hundred km. away but I can smell your aroma nearby.

Premium MemberMeet Me In Waitangi

The feud in our families vetoes our bond
We’re stood back to back for fear we’d abscond
They force you to walk, keep moving, don't stop
At gunpoint I’m ordered to walk ’til I drop
So each step we take is two further apart
But nothing will crush the intent in our heart
So walk, run or drive, take a boat or a plane
Just as I shall till I see you again
Someday our footprints will meet in the sand
And no man shall stay me from taking your hand
For twelve thousand miles will bring you to to me
And we’ll be together in Waitangi

                          ***

[Waitangi is in the Chatham Islands, New Zealand and
is very very nearly London’s antipode (opposite point on the globe).
London’s actual antipode is 800 km away in the Pacific Ocean
but meeting up in a couple of rubber dinghies seemed a little
Far fetched.]

She

She is beautiful like the rain,
Which can relieve all your pain.

She is amazing like the stars,
Who can remove all your darks.

She is wonderful like the light,
Who can remove your bad colors light.

Do you know who is she?

She is a girl, a daughter, a woman, a mother and a wife
Who gave you life
One that you can find everywhere at everyplace,
But to whom
No one can replace.

Then why don't we respect she?
For every mistake, why is always she?
And why not we?

To Mahakanadarawa With Love

My Dearest Mahakanadarawa,
What a joy to
Have a friend like you
For giving me strength
The way you do
For lifting me up
When I am down
And putting a smile on my face
When I am wearing a scowl
Thanks for being there
And helping me grow
Your companionship means a lot
For me,
My dearest
Mahakanadarawa

(Mahakanadarawa is a huge water reservoir located 15 km away from Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. A lot of people whose economy is based on farming and fishing depend on the particular reservoir for years. It gets dried up in absence of torrential rain, but has been able to keep some water to meet the needs of such innocent people.

A fisherman happened to tell me the story with a great sense of attachment and love while having a look at the reservoir with a heavy heart. I wish he could pen down his words, but he could not write a single word. Accordingly, I had to express his love and attitudes towards the
Mahakanadarawa Reservoir on behalf of him).

Premium MemberSable Island

Is part of Halifax
This island is 42 km. long
It is the equlvalent of walking
In sand from downtown Halifax
All the way to Peggy's Cove

Sable Island has 500 wild horses
After surviving centuries of the winter
The exact amount of horses unknown
Some believe they are ancestors of horses
That survived the shipwrecks

While these claims Norsemen John Cabot
Or the Portuguese explores or Acadians
Had left them on the island
The most popular is likely explanations
In the Boston merchant hired to transport

Acadians during the Expulsiion not the horses
The island is gradually moving eastwards
As it slowly washes away in the west
While sand builds in the eastwards

Others believe the island centre suffering
Just that island is shrinking
Then one day eventually disappear

Premium MemberMorecambe Bay

the storm arrived before we left
but with shelter in our reach
we stopped to watch the shifting sands
sidewind across the beach.

with turbulent, violent, brush-like strokes
of sky and sea and grey,
the rain and mist obscured our views
of what was morecambe bay.

despite the cold, wet monochrome
we turned our heads and saw
yellows and pinks and light and depth
we had never seen before.
